Description
UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICEH HERBERT M. CARPENTER, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF PAPER-PULP FROM WOOD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,914, dated December 17, 1878; application filed May 18, 1878.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT M. CARPEN- TEE, of Minneapolis, State of Minnesota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in the Process of Making Paper -Pulp; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the manufacture of Wood pulp for paper, and it is an improvement on the patent issued to J. T. Averill, May 30, 1876, No. 177,917. 7.
It consists in the use of chloride of lime, soda-ash, or any equivalent material, durin g the process of cooking the wood in an open vessel. 7
By this addition of the materials named during the process of cooking, the color of the pulp is improved and additional strength is given to the fiber. The chemicals also remove the pitch and other deleterious matter from the pulp, and thereby secures an improved article.
I am aware that chemicals haveheen used during the process of cooking in closed ves sels, and such is not my invention. The tendency of these chemicals, during the process of cooking in a closed "essel, is rather to destroy them strengthen the fiber, and also injures the color.
Having thus described my invention, what I 0131111138 new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The process of preparing wood fiber for paper-pulp herein described, and consisting in the use of chloride of lime, soda-ash, or any equivalent material, durin g the process of cocking the fiber in an open vessel.
HERBERT M. CARPENTER.
Witnesses C. F. BROWN, EDWIN L. FRYER.
