The second form of construction of our new toy-vehicle represented in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 comprises a spring-driven clockwork I mounted on the base-plate I5 of the toy-vehicle, said clock# work having its winding-stem at I' and serving for driving the axle 2 for the rear-wheels 3. One of the gear-wheels of the clockwork I further serves for driving an axle 5 by way of a pinion 4 at one end thereof, the other or outer end of said axle 5 carrying the crown-wheel 6 meshing with the pinion 'I on the axle 8' which is posi- ,tioned laterally of the clockwork and in longitudinal direction of the toy-vehicle. The front end of said axle 8' carries the toothed wheel or clapper 9' having .the form of a crown-wheel. At its rear end said axle 8 is mounted somewhat loosely in a bearing I3 which is preferably formed by a flap bent out of the casing of the clockwork. Said axle 8', in addition, is guided at a point nearer to its front end in a slotted bearing II' permitting upward and downward swinging of said axle. OnA the winding stem I of said lclockwork there is mounted the cam` I2' which upon operation of said clockwork will impart downward swinging motion to said axle 8 and the clapper 9 mounted thereon.
Engagement between the crown-wheel 6 and the pinion l on the axle 8' is such that rotation and periodical upward and downward swinging motion is imparted to said axle 8' and the clapp'er 9' thereon. In this case the casing I l of the toy may likewise be provided at the place of contact with said clapper 9' with corrugations, ribs, notches or the like as indicated at I3.
Upon rotation of the crown-wheel 6 said axle 8 and therewith said clapper 9' will be swung upward and moved into slight contact with the casing Il and the corrugations or the like at I3 thus producing the desired sound. The crown wheel 6 rotates in the direction of the arrow and rotates the pinion and the axle 8. Under the influence of this rotation, the loosely mounted axle 8 is, of course, vibrated and as the bottom and sides of the guide II prevent downward or lateral movement, it is swung upwards on its pivot I3' until further upward movement is prevented by the clapper 9' contacting the corrugation I3. This sound may further be improved by providing said clapper 9 on the axle 8 with an eccentical weight I' which by action of its centrifugal force will periodically-increase the contact or lsliding pressure between said clapper 9 and said casing I 4. While the upward swinging motion of said axle 8 and therewith the contact of said clapper 9' with said casing is effected by the rotation of said crown-wheel 6, the downward swinging motion of said axle 8 and said clapper 9 vis brought about by the cam I2 with the eiect of temporarily or periodically interrupting the produced sound.
The casing I l which covers up the clockwork I is mounted preferably loosely or with the intermediary of a sound insulating layer on the baseplate I of the toy-vehicle. The casing I4 thus will act practically as the sounding member of a bell thus improving the resonance of the sound produced during the sliding contact between clap- .per 9 and casing I I.
While we have shown and described herein a rotating axle 8 and clapper 9, which in addition to its rotation may be swung upward and downward in a vertical plane, it will also be possible to cause swinging of said axle and clapper in another plane, for instance in a horizontal plane.
We claim:
1. A toy-vehicle comprising a casing, a springdriven clockwork and a sound-producing device to be operated by said clockwork, said soundproducing device consisting of an axle, of mechanism for imparting a combined rotary and periodical swinging motion to said axle from said clockwork, and of a clapper mounted on said axle and adapted to produce a sound when in sliding contact with said casing.
2. A toy-vehicle as specified by claim 1 comprising a spring interposed between said axle and some point fixed with respect to the toy-vehicle, said mechanism including a cam driven by said clockwork and adapted to impart said periodical swinging motion `to said axle in co-operation with said spring to cause said clapper to come periodically into sliding contact with said casing to periodically produce said sound.
3. A toy-vehicle as specified by claim 1, comprising a bearing for said axle at one end thereof, a further slotted bearing for said axle nearer the other free end thereof, both of said bearings permitting said combined rotary and periodical swinging motion of said axle, said mechanism including a pinion mounted on said axle in mesh with a gear-wheel of said clockwork, to impart said rotary motion to said axle and said clapper as well as said swinging motion in the direction of said casing, and a cam driven by said clockwork and adapted to impart said periodical swinging motion to said axle, in a direction away from said casing.
4. A toy-vehicle as specied by claim 1, and an eccentric weight operatively associated with said axle and clapper to periodically vary by action of its centrifugal force the contact-pressure 'between said clapper and said casing to produce a periodically varying sound. l
5. A'toy-vehicle as specified by claim l, comprising a spring interposed between said axle and some point fixed with respect to the toy-vehicle, said mechanism including a cam driven by said clockwork and adapted to impart said periodical swinging motion to said axle in co-operation with said spring to cause said clapper to come periodically into sliding contact with said casing to periodically produce said sound, and an eccentric weight operatively associated with said axle and said clapper to periodically vary by action of its centrifugal force the contact-pressure between said clapper and said casing for producing a periodically varying sound during times of contact between said clapper and said casing.
6. A toy-vehicle as speciiled by claim 1, in which said casing at a place of contact with said clapper is provided with corrugations or the like to intensify the sound produced by sliding contact .between said clapper and said corrugations.
