UNITED STATES PATENT OFFliIE Application July 26,

This invention relates to a lock for automobile doors.
The handles of these-locks generally rotate about a pivot extending perpendicularly to the door surface and project considerably from the plane of said surface, limiting the lateral clearance of the body, catching some part of the users clothes and spoiling the line of the car.
According to this invention the handle rotates about a pivot parallel to the plane of the door I and the lock opens by the simple outward swinging of the handle. The handle and its pivot can be lodged in a recess in the door surface and provision is made for permitting the handle end [5 to be caught by one finger and pulled outward for opening the door by enlarging the recess on one side or causing the handle end to project slightly to the outside.
The drawing shows diagrammatically by way 20. of example a lock embodying two vertically sliding rods.
Figure 1 is an elevation. 1 Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Figure 3 is a horizontal cross section on line 25 A-,OP-B of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view showing details of the latch operating mechanism.
'Figure 5 is a sectional view taken at right angles to Figure 4.
The door is opened and closed by the longitudinal displacement of the rods 3a. This longitudinal displacement is effected by the rotation of the disc 4 lodged in the case 2 and connected to the sliding rods 3a by the links 3. The disc 35 4, which is connected to the handle 5 for opening the door from the inside of the car, is provided with two diametrically opposite-slots 20,
in which fit pins 2| arranged on the links 3. Aspring 22 acting on a. roller 23 rotatably mount- 40 ed on a pin 24 fixed to the disc 4 tends to carry the latches into the closing position shown in Fig. 1. On the face opposite to that carrying the spring, the disc carries a pin 6 cooperating with the concealable handle I. The disc 4 is ro- 45 tated from the inside of the car by turning the handle 5 which is of the usual type, and from the outside of the" car by swinging the handle I outward. The eccentric pin 6, carried by disc 4 is-acted upon by a finger 9 on the handle 1, 50 parallel to the pivot and to the door surface. By theaction of a spring Hi the finger 9 is held against the pivot .6 of the disc 4 so that the oscillation of the handle to the position 1' brings about a rotation lock. The handle 'I is sunk into recess II in the door. The handle end 1a is slightly bent outward and to move the of rotation 8 of the handle handle this end la is caught from behind by the tip of thefirst finger. To permit this manipulationwithout bending the handle end la excessively, the recess H is enlarged at its end l2.
The pivot 8 is carried invisibly by a light ferrule 5 l3, secured to the door and a stop I4 is provided for the handle i. The rubber pad l5 for the door and the window panel 16 are also visible on Figure 3.
What I claim is:
1. In an automobile door, safety latching means comprising a pair of locking bolts, a disc pivotally mounted in said door and adapted to be rotated by a knob on the inner side of said door, pin and slot connections between said bolts and said disc whereby rotation of said disc is effective to operate said bolts, means acting on said disc to hold said bolts in their locking positions, an eccentric pin on the outer side of said disc, said door having a recess in the outer sur- 2 face thereof, a handle mounted in said recess substantially flush with the outer surface of the door when said handle is in its unoperated position, and a one-way driving connection from said handle to said eccentric pin, whereby operation ofsaid handle is eiiective to unlock the door, but unlocking of the door by operation of said knob disengages said one-way driving connection to leave said handle in its unoperated position substantially flush with the outer surface of the door.
2. In an automobile door, safety latching means comprising a pair of locking bolts, a disc pivotally mounted in said door and adapted to be rotated by a knob on the inner side of said door, 35
pin and slot connections between said bolts and said disc whereby rotation of said disc is effective to operate said bolts, means acting on said disc to hold said bolts in their locking positions, an eccentric pin on the outer side of said disc, said 40 door having a recess in its outer surface, a, handle, means mounting said handle in said re cess substantially flush with the outer surface of the door when said handle is in its unoperated position, said last-mentioned means including a lever pivoted in said door and operatively connected with said handle, an offset projection upon said lever resting in the normal closed position of the door on said eccentric pin, whereby operation of said handle is effective to unlock the door, but unlocking of the door by operation of said knob simply serves to separate said projection from said eccentric pin to leave said handle in its' unoperated position substantially flush with the outer surface of the door.
