APPARATUS FOR FORMING MOLDS Filed NOV. 22, 1935 V w 7 g INVENTOR JOSEPH E.BAT|E A TTORNEYS Patented Feb. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE APPARATUS FOR FORMING MOLDS Application November 22, 1935, Serial No. 51,168
Claims.
The invention relates to the production of molds and refers more particularly to methods of and means for forming molds for use in the casting of flanged or ribbed articles, such as brake 5 drums, having brake rings with circumferentially extending ribs.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a method of and an apparatus for forming at relatively low cost a mold having a cavity with a wall recessed to form a flanged or ribbed article. Another object is to provide an improved method of and an apparatus for forming a mold having a cavity with a grooved wall. A further object is to so form the apparatus that it may be readily applied and removed and readily operated when applied.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an apparatus showing an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
As illustrated, 20 is a circular flask and 2! a bottom board on which said flask is placed, the two being concentrically positioned relative to each other. The molding material 22, which is preferably green sand, is rammed into the flask and provided with a central cavity which does not extend completely therethrough. In other words, the molding material has a shape to provide the web portion 23 and the transverse peripheral circular portion 24. The bottom board is provided with the axial or central pilot 25 which extends upwardly through the web portion of the molding material. The fixture for rolling the grooves in the circular portion 24 of the molding material comprises the circular support 26 which is adapted to rest upon and be positioned axially of the mold cavity by the flask 20. The support is also positioned concentrically with the flask by suitable means, such as the pins 26'. The fixture also comprises the carrier element 21 in the nature of an annulus resting upon the support 26 and concentrically positioned therewith by means of the circular shoulder 28 engaging the outer periphery. 29 is a second carrier element movably mounted upon the carrier element 21. This second carrier element is in the nature of an arm and it is pivotally mounted upon the first mentioned carrier element by means of the shouldered screw 29. 3B is the groove forming roller journalled upon the pin 3|, which latter is fixedly secured to and depends from the second carrier element 29. The second carrier element being angularly movable relative to the first mentioned carrier element, the roller 39 may assume a position to fully engage the circular portion 24 of the molding material, as shown in full lines in Figure 1, or to assume a position clearing this circular portion, as shown in dotted lines in the same figure. To limit the angular movement of the carrier element 29 and consequently the gen-- erally radially outward movement of the roller 30 relative to the molding material, the support 25 is extended radially inwardly beyond the flask 2t soqthat its inner circular face 32 may be engaged by the enlarged rib 33 of the roller.
With the construction as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the fixture may be readily applied to the flask having the rammed molding material therein by locating the second carrier element with the roller occupying a position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, so that the roller will clear the circular wall of the mold cavity. After the fixture has been applied, the second ca'rrier element can be swung angularly to engage the roller with the molding material, after which the second carrier element and also the carrier element supporting this second carrier element can be bodily moved through a circular path as controlled by the support to groove the molding material, the depth of grooves being determined by engagement of the roller with the support.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An apparatus for forming a mold, comprising a flask containing a mold body of molding material and having an arcuate wall, a support positioned by said flask in predetermined axial relation to said mold body and having an arcuate face concentric with said arcuate wall, a carrier element movably mounted upon said support, a roller upon said carrier element and engageable with said arcuate wall and being also in rolling engagement with said arcuate face, said roller having an annular encircling rib and said support and carrier element being relatively movable to cause movement of said roller along said arcuate wall.
2. An. apparatus for forming a mold, comprising a flask containing a mold body of sand and having a cavity with an arcuate wall, a support positioned by said flask in predetermined axial relation to the cavity and having an arcuate face concentric with said arcuate wall, a carrier element mounted upon said support, a second carrier element movably mounted upon said first mentioned carrier element, and a roller mounted upon said second carrier element engageable with said arcuate wall, said roller having an annular encircling rib and being also in rolling engagement with said arcuate face and said first mentioned carrier element being movable relative to said support to cause movement of said roller along said arcuate wall.

An apparatus for forming a mold, comprising a flask containing a mold body formed of sand and having a cavity with a circular wall, a support mounted upon said flask having a circular face concentric with said circular wall, a carrier element mounted upon said support, a second carrier element movably mounted upon said first mentioned carrier element, and a roller upon said second carrier element engageable with said circular wall, said roller being engageable with the circular face on said support to limit bodily movement of said roller in an outward radial direction and said first mentioned carrier element being movable in a circular path to cause movement of said roller along said circular wall.
4. An apparatus for forming a mold comprising a flask containing a preformed sand mold having a circular wall, a plate registerable with said flask and having a circular bearing concentric with said circular wall, an annular carrier mounted on said plate to be revoluble about the axis of said circular bearing, a member pivotally connected .to said carrier to extend radially inward therefrom, and a fashioned roller mounted on said member for engaging said circular wall and. having a portion engaging said circular bearing whereby the rotation of said annular carrier through the medium of said member will move said roller radially outward to the limit imposed by said circular bearing.
5. An apparatus for forming a mold comprising a flask containing a preformed sand mold having a circular wall, a plate registerable with said flask and having a circular bearing concentric with said circular wall, an annular carrier mounted on said plate to be revoluble about the axis of said circular bearing, a member pivotally connected to said carrier to extend radially inward therefrom and having an operating handle at its inner end, and a fashioned roller mounted on said member for engaging said circular wall, said roller being positioned to clear said wall when said member extends radially inward and having a portion for rolling contact with said circular hearing when said member extends obliquely whereby the rotation of said carrier by said handle will move said member from a radial to an oblique position pressing said fashioned roller into said circular wall to the limit imposed by said circular bearing.
