Another object is to provide in a connecter including a contact mounting body and a casing `receiving' such body, cooperating means between the contacts and body for retaining the contacts in the body.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the Y accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the `invention is shown. However it is to be understood'that the invention is `not limited to the details disclosed but includes all such variations and modications as fall within the spirit lof the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

Referring in detail to-the drawing the 4invention is shown by way of illustration as embodied in a three wire cord connecter including an insulating body lli and an outer member or casing It is however also adapted for two wire connecters or single piece or other types oi' connecters. The casing II is also of insulating material and both it and the body are preferably molded of live rubber.

The recesses I2 open through the inner end of the body Ill and terminate in radially extending openings-or recesses I6 while the recess I4 also opens through the inner'end of the body and terminates in an opening or recess I1. Entrance slots I8 are provided through the outer end .Wall of body Ill providing for the insertion into the respective body recesses of blade type contacts on connecter caps. The various recesses intermediate the ends of the body II), immediately inwardly of the inner ends of the entrance slots, are laterally enlarged as at `I!) and such enlarged portions of the recesses are connected with the more lrestricted portions thereof by inclined side walls 20. In
its inner end the body is provided with slots or recessesf2l extending laterally from the openings I6 and with a slot or recess 22 spaced from the opening I1 by a wall portion 23.
Each contact I3 includes a pair of elongated, finger-like, resilient members 24 and 25 detachably connected by a screw 26 which also serves as a binding post screw for connecting a conductor as will be understood. The screw 26 kthreads into a hub portion 21 on the member 24 and clamps the inner end portions of the members against one another. Member 24 is offset intermediate its ends as at 28 so that while the outer end portions of said members are normally in engagement at 29 they may be sprung apart in parallel relation by the insertion of a blade contact between them and will grip such blade contact and make a good electrical engagement with it. Beyond point 29 the members are bent to incline upwardly in opposite directions providing portions 30 extending away from one another, and the extreme ends of the members are then again bent providing downwardly and outwardly inclined portions or flanges BI. In addition at its inner end member 25 isprovided with lateral wing-like extensions 32. V
Contact I5 includes one of the members 24 and also includes a member 25a corresponding in all respects with the member 25 except that member 25a does not include lateral wing-like extensions but does include an extension comprising a hook-like portion generally designated 33 and including a flat plate-like part 34 and a part or lug 35 at the outer edge of the part 34 fand spaced from but substantially parallel with the main body oi the member 25a.
When the vcontacts I3 are in their recesses in the body their outwardly bent portions 3I| are the members 25 of the contacts occupy the slots 2I extending laterally from the openings I6. The
, disposal of the extensions 32 inthe slots 2l provides a structure preventing the contacts from being pushed entirely through the recesses.
The laterally bent outer end portions 3U of the respective members of each contact are in engagement or are substantially in engagement with the side walls of the laterally enlarged portions I9 of the recesses I2 and thus 'overlie the inclined wall portions 20 of the recesses thereby preventing the .contacts from falling out of the body .or from being pushed out of the body through the inner ends of the recesses. n a blade contact being inserted through an entrance slot I8 it enters between Vthe pair of members of a contact forcing such members apart and causing their extreme end portions 3l to have a greater effective -width to thus engage inclined still more effectively locking the contact in the body.
When a contact IIii is in place the plate 34 of its hook-like portion 33 overlies 'a part of the inner end of the body while its upturned part 35 enters the slot or notch 22 in suchend of the body. This ilat end 34 serves to easily distnguish the grounding contact from the other contacts when the electrician is making the lead wire connections, and indicating marks such for example as GR maybe lstamped on it if desired. Otherwise contact I functions in the same manner as the contact-I3, the oppositely extending outer end portions of its members occupying the laterally enlarged portion of its recess to prevent the contact falling or being casually pushed out of place through the inner end of the, body I0.
Obviously the hook-like part 33 of the contact will prevent the latter being pushed too far into the body. It is' to be understood that all of the contacts might be of the same construction and it is further to be understood that the invention is not limited to' a connecter mounting three contacts since obviously .the ground contact may be omitted.
. Whenthe contacts are in place in the body they may not fall out of place or be casually pushed out of place, and'in fact a contact may not be removed from the body except by removal of the screw 26 and withdrawal of the members or iinger-like pieces thereof one at a time through the inner end of a body. The openings I6 and I'I give `access either for the insertion or the removal of the screws 26.
Fig. 1l suggests the vmanner of applying or removing a contact, and in this connection it is pointed out that the contacts may be applied or removed only by detaching or releasing their members from one another by removing the screw 26 and then inserting the members one at a time into a recess through the inner end of the body I0 or removing such members one at a time through the inner end of the body. On extension 36 is a cable clamp comprising similar members 36 having ears 39 connected by screws 40 threaded into one clamp and adapted to be tightened to draw such memberstoward one another and thus clamp the tubular extension 36 against a cable passing therethrough and remove strain on the cable from the connection of the leads to the binding screws 26.
At the upper end of the `casing lII there is an .annular inturned lipl or bead 4I received in a groove 42 in the body Il) when the latter is partially inserted into the casing and inwardly of such bead 4I is a shoulder 43 against which The wing-like extensions 32 of contacts I3 and the plate-like part 34 of contact I 5 also engage against this vshoulder 43 and the shoulder thus -serves to prevent such contacts moving or being pushed out of the body I0 when the body and casing are assembled. In one vside such body is provided with a recess 44 and the casing II is provided with a corresponding projection or lug 45 entering the recess 44 when the casing and the body areassembled whereby the-casing and body are held against relative turning movement.
Having thusset forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
l. A connector comprising an insulating body having a recess therein opening through its inner end and having an entrance vslot in its outer end for the insertion of a blade type contact, said recess being enlarged in its portion immediately at the inner end of said entrance slot with a narrower portion inwardly of said enlargement, a contact in said recess and comprising a pair of separable resilient' members and a screw connecting said members, and said members having their portions'in the larged portion of .the recess `bent away from one another providing ilanged portions of greater width than the narrowed portion of the recess to retain the contacts in the recess.

A connecter comprising an insulating body having a recess therein opening through its inner end and an entrance slot through its outer end for the insertion of a blade type contact, said recess being laterally enlarged in its portion at 'the inner end oi said entrance slot and having a narrower portion inwardly of said enlargement a contact `in said recess and comprising. a pair ofmembers means detachably connecting the in'- ner ends of said members, said members toward 4their outer ends substantially in engagement and laterally enlarged and extending into the enlarged portion lof the recess whereby the contact is prevented from being pushed out of the body and can be removed therefrom only on separating said members and withdrawing them one at a. time through the inner end of the recess and whereby on insertion of a blade type contact between said members they are forced apart at their extreme ends to cooperate with the Walls of the enlarged portion of the recess to prevent longitudinal movement of the contact.
3. A connecter comprising an insulating body having a recess therein opening through the inner end thereof and a blade type contact entrance slot o leading to said recess from the outer end thereof,

A connecter comprising an insulating body4 having a recess opening through the inner end thereof and an entrance slot leading to said recess from the outer end thereof, said recess being laterally enlarged intermediate the ends of the body, said bodyv having a slot in its inner end spaced from said recess, a contact in said recess and comprising a pair of connected members having laterally extending portions projecting into the laterally enlarged portion of the recess whereby to prevent movement of the contact outof the body through the inner end thereof, a hook-v shaped extension on one of said members land having its end portion disposed in said slot in the inner end of the body and preventing movement of the contact outwardly through the recess, and means detachably connecting said y members whereby they may be released from one another and then removed one at a time through the inner end of the body.

A connecter comprising a resilient insulating body having a recess therein opening through its inner end and having an entrance slot through its outer end for the insertion of a blade type contact, said recess being laterally enlarged in its portion at the inner end of said entrance slot, ay contact in 'said recess comprising a pair of elongated resilient members.' means detachablyconnecting said members at their inner ends, said members toward their outer ends being substantialiy in engagement and having their outer end portions bent away from one another and extending into the enlarged portion of therecess whereby the contact is prevented from being pushedout of the body and can be removed from the body only on detaching said members from one lCERTIFICATE Patent No'. 2,105,1t65.
