1 Claim.

This invention relates to sash constructions and in particular/toen arrangement of sash parts which will facilitate the inward opening of the windows for the purpose of cleaning or the like.

f A'particular object ci my invention is to provide a construction which will embody a movablenstrip member which can be readily operated by the housewife tcrele'aseth'e sashes preparatory to` swinging the same inwardly, the operation of the strips requiring a minimum of effort and practically no skill.

A still further and important object of my invention is to provide a hinging means in connection with the sashes which includes a weather l5 strip for sealing the sashes against the action of the elements and which at the same time permits the sashes to be raised and lowered as any ordinary window.

A still further object cf my invention is to 3) provide a sash construction which will make use of sash weights at one side only necessary, will be adaptable to sash frames in use, will be inexpensive to install and will be easily and quickly operable to swing the sashes inwardly for any purpose desired.

Changes and variations may be made in the construction shown and described without departing from the principles of the invention or sacricing its chief advantages; hence such invention :1-1; is not to be coniined to the precise structure shown in the drawing, in which;

Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 indicates .s a sash frame, having the usual side channels or grooves I9 in which ride the sashes, the upper sash being indicated by the numeral S, and the lower sash by numeral 'I. At the left side only, the sash frame is provided with the wells for the reception of the sash weights 8 which are attached in the usual manner to the sashes by the cords or chains il. The sash frame includes the usual outer strip I 0, the center strip I I and inner stripV I2, between which strips the sashes 6 i5 and 'I may have Vertical sliding movement.

L-50) .In order' to adapt the outer or upper sash 6 to have inward swinging movement, I secure in any suitable manner, a weather strip I3 to the center strip II so that the curled end or edge I4 of the weath'er strip- I 3 isfin position to receive the turned over end I8 of a hinge plate forming part of a hinge i'l that is secured to thes'ash 6 adjacent the upper and lower edges ofr said sash. As many of these hinges may be employed as desired.

As shown, thehinges'are preferably at the right side of the sash, but may bey placed lat the left sidefif desired. At the leftside;asillustratedythe sash 6 is provided with an edge strip 2l), mounted thereon for movement toward and away from the edge of the strip by screw and slot connections, the screws being indicated as at 24 and the slots as at 25. In` order that the edge strip 2l) may be moved toward and away from the edge of the sash, use is made of a finger lever 2| which is riveted as at 23 to the strip 26 and has pivoted thereto the screw 22 secured in the sash 6. The strip 2U is permitted to operate by the slots 25, and when it is desired to open the sash the lever 2I is thrown to the position shown in outline in Figure 1 and the strip 2U is moved to retracted position as shown in outline. The retractile movement of the strip 20, which has extended in behind the center strip II of the sash frame construction releases the sash 6 and allows it to be swung inwardly. This strip 20 is also a weather strip and effectively seals the window against the elements.

The outer sash will clear the center sash strip I I in its swinging movement, as will also the inner sash 1 whose edge carries a like strip 20 and lever 2I. The strip 2D on the inner sash 'I moves in behind the inner sash strip I2 and also effectively seals the inner sash. Both strips 2l) act as weather strips. The inner sash is mounted for inward swinging movement in practically the same manner as is the upper sash 6, the weather strip I5 being secured to the sash frame 5 beneath the inner strip I 2 so that the slot forming bend I6 in the edge of the strip I5 is closer to the sash frame and gives the lower sash a shorter arc to swing through thus permitting both sashes to be opened a maximum amount. The turned over end I8 of the hinges I'I secured to the inner sash is slidable in the weather strip I5 and the sash can operate freely in vertical direction and can be swung inwardly at any point in its vertical movement so that the housewife in cleaning the outer surfaces of the windows can pull the sashes down or raise them to any convenient height. The hinges are preferably secured to the inner sash ure 3, the sash frame has been originally made to accommodate the sash construction already described andin order to permit the sashes to swing inwardly, the sash frame is provided with the steppedV sash runways 29 and 3i) each having slots therein for the reception of the sash stripsV 3l which are identical, in all respects to the strips 29 described. Vwell as the strips 3l prevent any outward movement of the sashes and the strips 3| are also weather strips and are retractible to permit inward swinging of the sashes.

It is evident therefore that I have provided Va sash construction which can be quickly installed with a minimum of alteration to the existing sash frame, one which is easy to operate andone which is swingable completely into a room so that danger of cleaning thefwindows from the outside is eliminated. The Weather strips extend the length of the sash frame opening. Y

My invention isnot to be restricted to the precis'e details oi construction shown since Vvarious changes and modifications maybe made therein without departing from the scope of the invention or sacricing its chief advantages.

What I claim is: Y

In a sash construction, in combination, a sash frame, an upper outer sash, an inner lowersash,

' inner, outer and central sash strips on opposite sides of the frame dening' grooves in which the sashes are disposed for vertical sliding movement, weather strips, an outer one of which is mounted on the face of said central sash strip and an inner one on the sash frame beneath said inner Y sash strip, said weather Vstrips extending the 1 edge portionsiof said weather strips whereby said hinge plates can slide vertically in the weather strips when the sashes are raised and lowered, the curled portion ofthe inner weather strip being closer to the sash frame than the curled edge portion of the outer weather strip whereby the lower inner sash swings'closer tothe sash frame than the upper sash so that maximum swinging movementvof both sashes is provided, slide strips constituting weatherstrips at the opposite edges ofthe sashes from said hinges for engagement with said inner `and central strips,v pin and slot means for attaching said slide strips to the sashes and a lever on each slide strip for moving said slide strips out of contact with the sash strips whereby said sashesV can be swung inwardly on their hinges at any vertical position in the sash frame.
