IMPROVEMENT IN BUFFERS FOR LOCOMOTIVE-TENDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,467, dated December 3, 1878; application filed October 11, 1878. 1
To all whom it may coo warn:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON PRESCOTT, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State .of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Buffers for Locomotive-Tanks, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side View of my improved buffer, shown as applied to a tank draw-head. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved buffer for locomotive-tanks for coupling them with coaches, using Millers or any other similar coupling, which shall be simple in construction, easily attached and detached, and will protect the brakeman from being crushed while coupling the cars.
The invention consists in the buffer made with a perforated tenon upon its end to adapt it to be secured to an ordinary draw-head by the pin. that secures the coupling-link to the said draw-head, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents an ordinary draw-head. B is the buffer, which has aperforated tenon formed upon its end to fit into one of the link-sockets link D in the said draw-head.
The body of the bufferB is made somewhat 'V-shaped, and has a V-shaped opening formed through it, as shown in Fig. 2, through which the brakeman inserts his hand to insert the coupling-pin when coupling the cars, so that he cannot be crushed or injured between the cars. The buffer may be made of wrought or cast iron, and can be easily detached when not required for use.
Having thus described my invention, Iclailn as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The buffer B, made with a perforated tenon upon its end to adapt it to be secured to an ordinary draw-head by the pin that secures the coupling-link to the said draw-head, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE WASHINGTON PRESCOTT.
