Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GAST, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESSES 0F APPLYING DESIGNS, &c., T0 GLASS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2l0.416, dated December 3, 1878; application filed June 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, JOHN GAsT, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Processes of Applying Designs, &c., to Glass, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to an improved process of applying designs to glass; and consists, essentially, in the application of a ground coat of paint to receive the ornament, as hereinafter set forth.
The picture or object to be transferred to the glass is first drawn on stone, in the usual manner. I then take gum coated transferpaper, )rint one or more coats of heavy white, or any shade or tint of color mixed with heavy white, upon it, forming a ground color, upon which the object or picture is printed in the usual lithographic or chromo lithographic manner. The impression thus obtained upon the ground color of the transfer-paper is transferred to the glass by coating either the impression or glass, but not both, with decalcomanic-cement or any suitable varnish, then placing the face of the impression upon the glass and passing both between rubber rollers.
After this the gummed paper is soaked off and a coat of varnish applied to the back of the picture. Thus is formed a translucent device or sign, the picture or letters being visible 011 either side of the glass.
Heretofore several processes of transferring lithographic prints onto glass have been practiced; but none of them have given the transfer-paper a ground coat to receive the ornament before it is transferred to the glass.
\Vhat I claim, therefore, as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The process herein described of applying designs to glass, which consists in first applying a heavy ground of light color or white to the transfer-paper, then applying the design upon the ground, and then transferring the whole to the glass, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in processes of applying designs, 850., to glass, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of June, 1878.
' JOHN GAST.
