This invention relates to pens, and particularly to a type of pen, in the use of which, considerabler pressure is frequently exerted on the writing end thereof, as, for example, in the use of stylo- 5 graphic pens which are used and are especially well adapted for making carbon copies of original writings.

A still further object of the invention is to improve devices of the character described in sundry details hereinafterr referred to and more particularly pointed out inthe appended claims.

The illustrative embodiment'of the invention comprises a body portion, indicated as a whole by the numeral II, and shown, in the present in` stance, as comprising ahollow vtubular barrel I2 having a bulb I3 formed of rubber or other suitable flexible and resilient material positioned in one end of lthe barrel I2, and 'a nozzle, indicated as a whole by the numeral I4, positioned in the opposite end thereof, the said nozzlebeing shown, inthe present instance, as comprising a tapered portion i5 having a tubular shell orl sleeveV I6 positioned therein and extending beyond the outer end thereof, the said nozzle I4 and, if desired, the barrel vI2 providing a container or reservoir .I'I' for maintaining a supply of ink within the devicei for writing purposes. Removably mounted within the sleeve I6iand extending, preferably, into the interior of they body portion II is a core'member, indicated asa whole by the numeral I8, and provided with an'f annular flange I9 adjacent its lower end adapted, preferably, to engage the inner face of the sleeve I6, preferably, adjacent the lower end thereof in a manner to position the core member I8 therein,A and in spaced relation with respect thereto in a manner to form an annular ink channel 2I comimunicating adjacent its upper end with the lower end of the reservoir I'I, the flange I9 serving also to close the extreme` lower end of the ink channel 2I.
For securing the core member I8 in proper alignment with the body portion II of the pen` and in relatively fixed position with respect there-` to, a ring 22 may be positioned in a recess 23 form-ed in the upper end portion ofthe nozzle I4 and secured therein by an adjacent portion of the tubular barrel I2 when the nozzle and barrel are assembled in the manner illustrated in Fig.2, the ring 22 being provided with a plurality of inwardly extending inclined spring fingers 24, shown, in the present instance, as three in number, adapted to yleldingly engage the core I8, and provided with upwardly extendingend portions 25 adapted to facilitate the positioning of the ,core` between the respective fingers, the core I8, in theY present instance, being Vshown as provided adja-n cent the fingers 24 with a pair of longitudinally spaced lugs or' annular ribs 26 adapted to engage the Y'lingers 24 at the upper and lower portions tudinally extending elongated substantially par-V thereof in a manner to maintain the core member I8 against longitudinal displacement with respect to the body portion and nozzle I4.
For obtaining ink from the reservoir l1 and ink channel 2| for writing purposes, the tubular shell or sleeve I6 is provided adjacent its lower end portion with a plurality of annularly spaced discharge openings 21 formed therein and communicating with the ink channel 2| adjacent the lower end thereof, the openings or apertures 21A being shown, in the present instance, as longiallel slots uniformly spaced around-the tubular shell or sleeve I6 in a manner to discharge theVY ink laterally or inta radial direction from the ink channel 2|, and for assisting in directing the ink toward the writing side of the pen, theportions of the shell or sleeve I6 between the respective slots 21 are grooved adjacent their lower Aedge portions as indicated at 28, the extreme lower 'edge 23 of the" sleeve'rlS being slightly Vrounded in the manner shown to provide a smooth edge portion for contact with'the writing surface on which the pen is used. It will be noted that the coreY member VI8l is Y shown, in the present'instance, as provided with an air. vent 3| formed therein and extending therethrough to permit Vof the admission of air into the interior of the body ||A and reservoir |1 to'replace the ink used in the writing operation of the pen, and providing also an intake passage through which ink may be drawn into the pen during the filling operation by manipulation of the bulb I3, the inkV during the lling operation being discharged from the upper or innerV end'of the opening 3| into the reservoir I1,

It will be understood that in the filling operation, the bulb I3 may be compressedand the lower end'of the nozzle I4 placed ina bottle* or other 'supply of ink, in which condition, upon releasing the bulb, the resiliency thereof will cause theA bulb to expand to its normal form and in so doing will draw ink through the opening 3| of the tubular core I 8, from which it Awill overflow at theupper end thereof intoV the reservoir I1. If it is desired to draw more ink into the reservoir thereafter, the bulb I3 may again be compressed, and the air expelled therefrom will be concentrated andi discharged through the opening13|`of the core '|87 due to the restriction of the opening in the barrel I2 by reason of the ange 32Y positioned therein, thus' preventing the exbesCreW-threaded orrotherwise secured to the upper end of the barrel l2.' In a' fountain pen having a body portion and an elongated hollow nozzle mounted thereon providing an ink reservoir, the combination of a core member positioned in and extending through the opening in saidA nozzle in spaced relation thereto to provide an annular ink channel communicating at its upper end with said reservoir, the lower end portion' of said member having an annular ilangeengagingthe adjacent lower end portion of said nozzle for completely closing the lower end of saidchannel, said nozzle having a plurality of elongatedannularly spaced longitudinally disposed discharge slots formed therein communicating with said ink channel for discharging the ink laterally therefrom and having a plurality of :annularly extending grooves formed in the respective portions of the nozzle ,between said slots, said grooves being spaced inwardly from the adjacent end of said nozzle.

In a fountain pen having a hollow body portion and a hollow nozzle mounted thereon providing an ink reservoir, the combination of a tubular core member positioned in said body portion and communicating with the interior thereg of, said core member extending through the opening rformed in'said nozzle in spaced relation thereto to provide an ink `channel communicating with said reservoir, Vthe lower end portion of said member engaging the lower end portion of said nozzle for completely closing the lower end of the channel, said nozzle having a plu- 'providing an ink reservoir, the combination of a tubular core member positioned in said body portion and communicating adjacent its upper end with the interior thereof, said core member extending through the opening in said nozzle in spaced relation thereto to provide an ink channel communicating at its upper end with said reservoir,` the lower end `portion of lsaid member having an annular flange in alignment vwith said channel and engaging the adjacent lower end portion of said nozzle for completely closing the lower end of the channel, said nozzle having a plurality of spaced elongated substantially parallel discharge slots formed therein communicating with said ink channel for discharging the ink laterally therefrom, and resilient supporting means secured between said body portion and nozzle and engaging said tubular core member substantially 'midway between itsends for maintaining the core member in relatively fixed position and in substantial alignment with respect to said body portion and nozzle.
9. rIn a fountain pen having a hollow body portion and a hollow nozzle mounted thereon providing an ink reservoir, the combination of a tubular core member positionedin said body portion and communicating adjacent its upper end with the interior thereof, said core member extending through the opening in said nozzle in spaced relation thereto to provide an ink channel communicating at its upper end with said reservoir, a laterally extending flange adjacent the upper end of said tubular core, the lower end allel discharge slots formed'therein communicating with said ink channel for discharging the ink laterallyV therefrom, resilient supporting lingers mounted in said body portionv adjacent the connection thereof with said nozzle and engaging said tubular core member for maintaining the core member in relatively fixed position and in substantial alignment with respect to said body portion and nozzle, and means on said core member engaging said ngers for normally maintaining the member against longitudinal displacement with respect to said body portion and nozzle.
10. In a fountain pen having a hollow body portion and a hollow nozzle mounted thereon providing aniink reservoir, the combination of a tubular core member positionedin said body channel andY engaging the adjacent lower end portion of said nozzle for closing the lower end of the channel, said nozzle having a plurality of spaced elongated substantially parallel discharge Y l slots formed therein communicating with said GEORGE S. vWALTER.
