9 Claims.
This invention relates to wave band indicators for radio receiving sets.
The invention has particularly to do with an indicator upon a tuning dial of a radio receiving set, such indicator being operated from the wave band selector means to indicate on the tuning dial which one of a number of scales thereon is to be referred to in tuning the set.
The objects of the invention include among others the provision of the following:
An improved wave band indicator;
Improved means of operating a wave band indcator in conjunction with a wave band selector switch;
An improved combination of multi-wave band dial and wave band indicator.
These objects and other objects which will hereinafter appear are obtained by the novel arrangement, combination and construction of elements hereinafter described and claimed. One embodiment of adevlce disclosing the invention is illustrated in the accompanying single sheet of drawing, hereby made a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front View of a device embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the device of Figure 1 on broken line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Y Figure 3 is an enlarged section of the central part of the same device on line 3--3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged section of the central part of the same device on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Like reference characters are used to designate similar parts in the drawing and in the following description.
In radio sets adapted to receive on two or more separate wave bands, as for instance on the standard broadcast band, the amateur and police band, and foreign station band and the like, the change from one band to another is made by means of a band selector switch.
The same tuning condensers are used for each band. Some means must be provided for pointing out on the tuning dial a scale to which reierence must be made in connection with the particular wave band selected.
The present device is intended for use on the conventional multi-band receiving set. The chassis of the set is indicated at I0. Usually mounted above the chassis are tuning condensers the front plate II of which is shown in Figure 2. A condenser shaft I2 extends through the front plate. `VMounted on thechassis proper is a wave (Cl. 11G-124.1)
band selector switch having a shaft I3, a knob I4, one or more switch arms as indicated at I5, and one or more sets of switch points I6.
Attached to the condenser shaft I2 is a collar I1, secured to the shaft by a set screw I8, or by v5 any other suitable means. The collar I1 carries a friction disk I9. The friction disk I9 is engaged by a friction wheel ZI! mounted on tuning shaft ZI and operated from the front of the set by a knob 22 to rotate the condenser plates to 10 tune the set. Mounted in line with the condenser shaft is a dial scale 23. Brackets 24 and 25 hold the dial 23 in position with respect to the chassis.
Printed or engraved on the front of the dial 15 scale 23 are four tuning scales, 26, 21, 28 and 29.` Each scale is adapted for use in connection with one particular wave band which is to be selected by the wave band selector switch. More or fewer scales may be used on the dial according to 20 whether the radio set is intended to cover more or less than four bands. Scales 26 and 21 are above the center of the dial and are to be used in connection with the upper end of a pointer. The lower scales 28 and 29 are to be used in 25 connection with the lower end of the pointer.
Set into or forming a part of collar I'I is a hollow extension shaft 30. A collar 3l is threaded onto extension shaft 3B to secure friction disk I9 in place. The outer end of shaft 30 extends 30 through a hole, indicated at 32, in dial scale 23. Mounted non-rotatively on the front end of shaft 30 is a pointer guide 33. A collar 34 on guide 33 extends about shaft 30 through the hole 32 in dial scale 23. A track 35 for a sliding pointer 36 35 is formed on a diameter of the pointer guide 33. The track 35 has a raised portion 31 to allow room for a cord 33. Cord 38 provides means for moving the pointer 36 endwise in either direction in the track 35. The cord 38 runs lengthwise along 40 the front of the pointer 36. Near each end of the pointer it passes through an aperture indicated at 39 and passes along the back of the pointer from each end to the shaft 3l).
The hollow at the front end of the shaft 30 is 45,
flared and curved outwardly at 4I) to permit the cord 38 to move readily into and out of the hollow of the shaft without cutting or fraying. The hollow of shaft 33 continues into collar I'I to a slot 4I cut in collar I'I. An arm 42 attached to the 50 chassisr I0 extends into slot 4I and carries an eyelet 43 within the slot 4I and opposite the mouth of the hollow through shaft 30.

are stationary, so that. the twoends of the cord pulley 44 mounted non-rotatively on shaft I3 of the wave band switch. Each end of the cord 38 passes partly about the pulley 44 and into an opening 45 in the pulley. Each end of the cord is secured inside the pulley to one end of a spring 46. Spring 46 passes about the hub 41 of the pulley. The spring 46 keeps cord 38 uniformly under tension, and prevents its Slipping on pulleyV 44.,
In the form ofz device shown, thepointer 36 is two ended. The top end is adapted to pass across scales 26 and 21 on the dial. end is adapted to pass across scales 28 and 29,I on the dial.
The operation of the device is aslfollows:A
The wave band selector switch is adjusted or moved to select the desired wave band. Pulley 44 moves with the movement ofy the-.switch and: pulls cord 38 a predetermined distance. Cord 38 pulls the pointer 36 up or down a selected! amount according towhich waveband is chosen.. If the wave, band. is. chosen with which scale 26' islused, the pointer 36. isextended fully upward to indicate scale 26. If the wave bandy covered by scale 28 is selected the pointer is moved fully down- Wardftocooperate with scale 28. Likewise scales 21. and 29 are. indicated upon the proper setting of the. wave band. selector switch.` The selector switch` and the pointer 3.6V having. thus been set, thesetis tuned by rotating the condensers inthe customary manner.

A Vwave band.` indicator for a multi-wave band` radio. set having a. wave band selector switch, comprising a dial having.v a scale thereon for each:such. wave: band, a pointerrotatable over the face. of said dial, and means to move said pointer longitudinally in a. straight-line path through: itsaxis of rotation to indicate awave bandscale on said dial, said means comprising a continuously operable connection between said pointer andV said selector switch.
2. A wavev band. indicator for a multi-Wave band radio set having a wave band4 selector switchcomprising a dialY having a scale. thereon for each. such wave b'anda pointer rotatable over the. face of saidv dial, and means to move saidy pointer longitudinally to indicate onev wave bandy scale on said dial, said means comprising a pulley operatedA by such selector switch,` and a cord about said pulley and connected to said pointer.
3. A wave bandl indicator for a multi-wave band radio set having a wave band' selector switch, comprising a dial having a scalethereon for each suchwaveband, a pointer rotatableover the' face of said dial, and meansl tomove said pointer longitudinally to indicate one wave band scale on said dial.. saidv means comprising a pulleyoperatedv by such selector switch, and a cordV about said pulley and about a portion of said pointer.;

A wave band indicator for a multi-wavek bandira'di'o set having aa wave bandA selector switch', comprising a dial having a scale thereon The lower for each such wave band and an aperture through the center thereof, a hollow rotatable shaft extending from said radio set to such aperture in said dial, a pointer affixed to said shaft and rotatable over the face of said dial, and means to move said pointer longitudinally across said shaft, said means comprising a pulley operated'by such selector switch, and a cord extendingk longitudinally ofy said pointer and about a portion thereof, through said hollow shaft, and about said pulley.

A wave band indicator for va multi-Wave band radio set having a wave band selector switch and a'tuning condenser shaft, comprising av dial having a scale. thereonfor each such wave band and having anV aperture through the center thereof', a hollow shaft rotatable with said tuning, condenser shaft and extending to the aperture in said dial, a pointer guide aixed to said hollow shaft for rotation therewith and having apointer track thereacross,. a pointer longitudinally movable in said pointer track, a pulley op eratedby said selector switch,.and a cord. extending longitudinallyv oi.V said pointer and about a portionv thereof withinsaid pointer. track through said hollow shaft. and. about. said pulley, said pointer being movable longitudinally by said cord when said selector switch. is operated and indieating. on. the dial the. wave band. scale. for use with the wave band selected by said selector switch.

A wave band indicator for av multi-wave band radio set having a wave band selector, comprising a. dial having a plurality of scales thereon, each Vof said scales corresponding to a wave band, a pointer movable longitudinally to each scale on the dial, said pointer in any position being rotatable about. a fixed axis to indicate arcuate relation to the scale, and means continuously operably connecting. said pointer to said wave band selector to move said pointer'. longitudinally to positions in a straight line with said axis to select the wave band to which said scale corresponds.

In' a multi-wave band radio set, a wave band selector, anindicating dial, a plurality of scales on said dia-l corresponding to individual wave bands, rotatable indicator means movable in Vfront of said dial, a portion of said indicator means being shift'able with respect to the remainder of the indicator meansY to Ypositions in a straight-line path through the axis of rotation, andmeans operably connecting said last named part to the wave band selector whereby the said'. part will be shifted to various predetermined positions with respect to the wave band selector.
9. A wave band indicator for a multi-band radio set having a wave-band selector comprising a dial having a plurality of scales. thereon, each of said' scales corresponding to a Wave-band,
a pointer, said pointer being movable to position with respect to said scale in which position the pointer resides in operative relationship to said scale, said pointer in any position being rotatable about a Xed axis to indicate arcuate relation to the scale, and means operably connecting said pointer to said wave-band selector to move said pointer to said positions in a straight line with said axis to select the wave-band to which said scale corresponds. i
