1 Claim.
This invention relates to window constructions, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which embodies a novel construction of metallic window frame and sliding sashes therefor to which either glass or screen panels may be readily adapted to lor removed from when desired.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings. in which- Figure l is a front elevation illustrating a window frame construction and sliding sashes therefor and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view lllustrating one of the vertical portions of the window frame.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view showing one of the verticaland horizontal portions of the sash.

Figure 'I is a fragmentary perspective view showing a panel holder.

Figure 10 is a detail sectional view taken on the line Ill-III of Figure 9.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a metallic window frame including vertical members 2 and horizontal strips 3. The strips 3 are welded or otherwise secured to the ends of the vertical members 2 for holding the latter in spaced relation. Each member 2 is of channel iron construction, as shown in Figure 4, consisting of a bight portion I, arm portions 5 bent to form channel-shaped guides 6. The bight portion 4 is provided with apertures 1 to receive fasteners for securing the frame I to a building. The channeled guides 6 slidably support window sashes 9.
Each sash 9 comprises vertical and horizontal rails 9 and I0. The rails 9 and III are welded or otherwise secured together. The rails 9 are of substantially rectangular shape in cross section having the front walls thereof cutaway to form entrances Il and are also provided with horizontally arranged slots I2 communicative with the entrances I I. The walls oi the slots I2v form mountings for cushion blocks I3 each provided in opposite faces thereof with grooves II to receive opposed walls of the slots I2. The cushion blocks extend into the entrances II and also project inwardly of the rails 9 as well as outwardly of said rails. The rails 9 are slidably received in the channeled guides 6, as shown in Figure 3, with the blocks having frictional contact with the walls of the guides. The blocks will maintain the sashes 8 in their adjusted positions relative to the window frame I and will prevent the sashes from rattling in the frame and will permit the sashes to be manually slid upwardly or downwardly as desired in the frame I.
Each rail I9 consists of an angle iron portion I6 and a box-like portion I6 in cross section. The wall I1 of the portion I9 is disposed at a desired inclination so that the rail II) of the lower sash will snugly fit the rail I0 of the upper sash when said sashes are in frame-closing position. The wall I8 of each rail I0 has slots I9 to receive fasteners 20. 'Ihe wall 2l of each rail I5 forms an abutment or stop.
'Ihe fasteners 20 are carried by panel frames 22 each of substantially rectangular shape and which support either a glass or screen panel. Each panel frame 22 has secured to the vertical rungs thereof channel members 23 adapted to extend into the entrances II of the sashes 8. The horizontal rungs of each panel frame abut the walls I9 and 2l of the rail I6. The fasteners are journaled to the horizontal rungs of the panel frames 22 and each include a stem 24 provided with a finger piece 25 at one end and an elongated head 26 at the opposite end. The heads 26 are capable of moving through the slots of the horizontal rails when positioned in parallelism therewith and when turned at right angles thereto will efficiently secure the panel frames in position in the sashes 9.
