CU'SPIDOR CARRIER AND HANDLER Filed March 20, 1937 Inventor ff fjazodz' Attorneys Patented Dec. 14, 1937 UNHTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Appiieation March 20,
2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in cuspidor carriers and handlers and the primary object thereof is to provide a simply constructed inexpensive and eificient device of this character adapted for use in stacking cuspidors, carrying a stack thereof, and depositing the cuspidors successively from the bottom of the stack.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the following description, and defined in the claims appended hereto.
In said drawing:-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a carrier and handler constructed in accordance with my invention, and
Figure 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Describing my invention in detail, with reference to the drawing by numerals, the improved carrier and handler comprises a cylinder I closed at its top as at 2 and outwardly flared at its bottom as at 3. The cylinder I may be made of any suitable light metal and of a diameter slightly larger than that of the average cuspidor to loosely fit over the latter. A U-shaped handle 4 is secured to the cylinder I, at diametrically opposite points at the top thereof as by rivets 5. A pair of leaf springs 6 are riveted, or otherwise secured, as at l, to the cylinder I to depend therefrom upon opposite sides thereof in vertical alignment with the ends of the handle bar 4, respectively. A pair of triangular block-like grips 8 are secured to the lower ends of the springs 6, respectively, as by screws 9 to extend through a pair of elongated slots it provided in the casing I, said grips ex tending into the interior of said casing as shown in Figure 2. The grips 8 are each formed with substantially right angular upper and lower lifting and camming faces II and I2, respectively, on their inner edges. The upper faces I I are designed to fit under the outwardly flaring top flange I3 of the usual type of cuspidor I4 to lift the latter as will be clear. The springs 6 tension the grips 8 against separated movement so that said faces I I are normally located for engagement with said flange I3 as shown in Figure 2. The camming faces- I2 of the grips 8 are so designed 50 that if the cylinder I is placed over a cuspidor I4 said faces and grips 8 will be cammed outwardly of the cylinder I by engagement with the upper edge of said flange I3 whereby if the cylinder I is moved downwardly over a cuspidor I4 said 5 grips 8 will take under the flange I3 with a snap 1937, Serial No. 132,141 (01. 294-32) action. The grips 3 are so located on the cylinder I that when the latter is placed over a cuspidor and upon the floor or ground said grips will engage the sides of the flange I3 well under the top edge of the same. As will be clear if the cylinder I is manipulated to stack a cuspidor held between said grips 8 on top of another and the cylinder I then lowered the grips 8 will be cammed outwardly in the manner previously explained to take under the flange I3 of the lower cuspidor I4. In this manner a stack of cuspidors may be quickly formed in the cylinder and carried away the lowermost one being supported by the grips 8 and the remaining ones by said lower one.
Manipulative means are provided for separating the grip 8 at will to release a cuspidor I4 as follows. A pair of grips releasing bars I5 are suitably secured at their lower ends to the grips 8, respectively, to extend upwardly therefrom above the top of the cylinder I. Above the cylinder I the releasing bars I 5 are each provided with an inwardly extending end I6. The inwardly extending ends I6 project through suitable slots I! in the sides of the handle bar 4 into the space between said bar 4 and the top 2 of the cylinder. The extremities of the ends I6 extend into opposite ends of a tube-like hand grip i8 whereby the latter is suspended between the handle bar 4 and the top 2 of the casing i The described connection between the ends I 6 of the releasing bars I 5 and the hand grips I8 is such that said ends I6 are pivotally and slidably mounted in said hand grip as will be clear. The releasing bars I5 are pivotally mounted, as by studs I9 extending through the ends of the handle bar 4 and the cylinder I and having suflicient play in said handle bar and cylinder to permit the releasing bars to be swung outwardly of the cylinder I. As will be manifest if the hand grip I8 is depressed the releasing bars will be swung in the manner described against the tension of the springs 6 to move the grips 8 outwardly and thereby release a cuspidor held therebetween.
The construction, operation and advantages of my invention will, it is believed, be clear from the foregoing description thereof.
Manifestly modifications in details described may be resorted to without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to all such modifications falling within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
What is claimed is:
l. A device of the class described comprising a cylinder provided with a pair of diametrically opposed slots adjacent its lower end, a handle bar secured to its upper end and spanning the same, a pair of leaf springs secured to the cylinder to depend therefrom in vertical alignment with said slots, respectively, a pair of block-like grips secured to the lower ends of said springs, respectively, to project through said slots into'said cylinder and tensioned against separative movement by said springs, and manipulative means for separating said grips comprising a pair of bars depending from the top of said cylinder and secured at their lower ends to said grips, respectively, said bars being swingably mounted on said cylinder for separative movement of their lower vends, means for swinging said bars comprising an extension on the upper, end of each bar overlying the top of said cylinder below said handle bar, and a sleeve-like hand grip telescoping over the extensions of said bars. r
V 2. A device of the class described comprising a container provided with a pair of opposed slots adjacent its lower end, a pair of leaf springs secured to the container to depend therefrom in alignment with said slots, a pair of block-like grips secured to the lower ends of said springs to project through said slots into said container said container, and a sleeve like hand grip, telescoping over the extensions'of-said bars.
