Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH IV. POLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
A IMPROVEMENT IN GRATES FOR LOCOMOTlVE-ENGINIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 21,021, dated July 27, 1858.
T0 all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WV. POLE, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Grates ot' Locomoti ves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichj Figure l is a transverse vertical section of a locomotive flre-box furnished with my improved grate-bars. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of part of the grate. Fig. l is a transverse section of one ot the bars.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in a certain construction of hollow grate-bars with provision for the admission of air to be forced through them by the movement of the locomotive, for the purpose of keeping them cool.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A A are the sides of the iireboX.
B is a tubular bearer extending across the lire-box near the front to support the front end of the grate-bars and opening at each end to the atmosphere, besides having passages a a opening through the front of the ire box. This bearer may be of cast or wrought iron.
C C are the bars, consisting of cylindrical tubes with a number of upward hollow projections b b at short distances apart to'support the fuel, the said projections being closed and of concave form at the tops, as shown in Fig. 2, and having their tops c c made of Separate pieces and fitted into them with tenons c c", as shown in the same figure, so as to be capable of being removed and replaced by new ones when burned out. rlhe front ends of the bars which rest upon the bearer B are closed, as shown at CZ d in Fig. 2; but their rear ends, which project through and are supported by the rear of the lire-box, are open, as shown at e in the saine ligure. The bars have each an opening f, (see Fig. 1,) which tits to a corresponding opening g (see Fig. 2)
-in the bearer B. The open ends of the bearer B are fitted with defiector=valves 7L 71, as shown in Figs. l and 3, to conduct air into the said bearer when the locomotive is in motion, the said valves being movable to the position shown in bold outline in Fig. 3, to conduct the air into the bearer when the locomotive is running forward, or to the position shown in dotted outline in the same figure, to conduct air thereinto when the locomotive is ruiming backward. The passages a, c are itted with one or more slide-valves i, to admitand regnlate a supply of air through the said passages, the said valve or valves being operated by a bell-cranky', which is connected by a rod c with an arm l on a shaft m, which runs along the exterior of one side of the tre-box to the l engineers platform, where it is iturnished with a handle by which to turn it to adjust the said valve or valves. l i
When the locomotive is in motion, going forward, the pressure upon the air in front of it causes the air to rush in with great velocity at the ends and passages a a of the bearer and to pass through the hollow bars C and out at the open ends e, thus keeping them cool and preventing their burning or being deiiected by the intense heat ot' the fire.
Vhen the locomotive runs backward, the air enters the open ends e e of the bars and escapes through the passages a a and open ends of the bearer and produces the same effect.
I do not claim the invention of hollow or tubular grate-bars or of hollow bearers there for having air-passages through them; but
7What I clailn as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of the tubular bars with hollow upward projections Z1 b, fitted with movable top pieces c c, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
J. W. POLE. Nitnessem JOHN CLOUDS, JAMES FLAKE.
