2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in wringer apparatus and is directed more particularly to improvements in heads for wringers. The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a wringer head which is of novel form and is constructed with a relatively few parts.
Present day demands require that wringer heads be of low cost in order to cope with competition and accordingly I have devised a wringer head which consists of a minimum of parts and one that requires a minimum of machining all to the end that the head may be produced at low cost.
In order that wringer heads may have an appearance to blend with wringers and washing machine with which they are used it is desired to change the appearance of wringer heads frequently. Accordingly the general appearance of my wringer head may be changed without changing the mechanical construction thereof. This is accomplished by providing an inner hub and associated working parts which may be standardized while outer side plates not necessarily working parts may take any form to give the appearance desired.
The novel wringer will hereinafter be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein.

Referring now to the drawing in detail the invention will be fully described.
A casing indicated generally by I has an interior bored hub part 2 which is connected to a bored gear housing 4. The hub 2 has a vertical bore 6 while the gear housing has a horizontal bore 8 therein. Side plates H] are spaced from the central hub 2 and a lower web [2 extends between the side plates Ill. The rear ends or sides of the side plates I0 are joined by a curving wall l4 and at their upper side they merge into the gear housing 4. At the forward end of the head bosses I6 are provided which may receive bolts for securing the wringer head and a wringer together.
The wringer head of the invention is adapted for use with a washing machine and for 1936, Serial No. 67,334
this purpose may be mounted on top of a column on which it turns so a wringer secured theretomay be set in different angular positions.
A shaft indicated by dot-dash lines 20 extends upwardly through the column referred to and is the driving shaft for the wringer head which drives the wringer. A part [8 rotates in the bore 6 of the hub 2 which is fixed to the shaft 20. A driving member 22 preferably in the form of a spur gear is arranged to be carried by shaft 29. A pair of gears 24 of the face gear type have disc like parts 26 which rotate and reciprocate in the bore 8 of the gear housing. A collar 28 rotatably receives a shaft 30 and pins 32 associated with shaft 30 are received in suitable grooves in the outer ends of the gears 24 whereby the gears are secured to the shaft for driving said shaft. The right hand end of shaft 30 may be coupled to the driven shaft of a wringer shaft in any well known manner.
The gears 24 are shown in a neutral position in Fig. 1 and they may be reciprocated so that either one is in mesh with the spur gear 22. With gear 22 rotating in a certain direction shaft 30 may be rotated in either one of two directions by meshing either one of gears 24 with gear 22.
A shifting rod 32' has its lower end secured to collar 28 and it extends through an angularly disposed slot 34 in the upper side of part 4 (see Fig. 3). As the rod 32 is moved sideways the slot brings about reciprocation of the collar for shifting the gears 24.
A manually engageable operating member 36 has a socket 3B in a hub 40 thereof which receives the head of member 32. Flanges 42 at the sides of the operating member 36 rest on the' upper part of the casing and a spring 44 in the socket 38 tends to yieldingly hold the part 36 against the casing while not holding the said part 36 against shifting movements it is frictionally held thereby against accidental displacement.
A locking bolt 40' is slidable up and down and its lower end is adapted to be received in a socket or sockets associated with the column with which the head is to be associated This is for locking the head against swinging on the column so that the wringer carried by the head may be releasably locked in various angular positions. A finger engaging part 42' slides up and down in a slot in the part [4 as shown and is secured to bolt 40' by means of a screw 43 or the like.
Only when the gears 24 are in the neutral position shown, may the bolt 40' be moved upwardly to unlock the head. This is accomplished in the following manner. When the gears are shifted to an operating position either the left hand gear 24 or a stop 46 on shaft 30 overlies the bolt 40 to prevent its being moved upwardly. Thus the head may not be unlocked for rotation when the gears 24 are in operative engagement with driving gear 22.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the wringer head is simple in construction so as to make low manufacturing costs possible but that it is efiicient in operation. As will be seen the workings parts may be standardized and by simply changing the plates I and part M the ap-.

Various changes and modifications may be made in the form of the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and I therefore desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A wringer head comprisingin combination, a casing for rotatably resting in a column, a lock member reciprocable on said casing between locking and non-locking positions having a part for engaging and releasably locking said casing against rotative movement on a column, a driving element, a pair of driven members shiftable between a neutral inoperative position and an operative position in engagement with said driv- 'gage able elements being ing element, means associated with said driven elements movable therewith to prevent movement of the locking member from looking position when a driven member is in engagement with the driving member, an operating member for shifting said driven members, a connection between the operating member and driven mem bers, the casing provided with a slot receiving the connections, and spring means associated with the operating member and connections urging the. operating. member against the casing.
2. A wringer head comprising in combination,
,.a casing having a vertical drive shaft bore and a horizontal driving mechanism bore, a shaft and engageable elements in the latter bore, the enshiftable axially, a shifter therefor, an operating member outside said casing swingable thereon on the axis of rotation of said engageable elements, the said casing provided with a cam slot, a member extending through said slot from said shifter, and yieldable connections between said member and operating member whereby the latter yieldingly bears on said casing, all adapted and arranged whereby as the operating member swings on said casing the engageable elements are shifted and the operating member is frictionally held on the casing against swinging movements.
