Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARK A. WELLS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN H'QRSESHOE-PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,173, dated November 19, 1878 application filed October 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARK A. WELLS, of
Boston, in the county of Suii'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Horseshoe-Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being hadto the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective of my horseshoe-pad, and Fig. 2 is a modification view.
My invention relates to a pad or elastic cushion adapted and intended to be applied to the hoofs of horses, and modify the concussion; and the novelty consists of the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
The body of the pad is made of rubber secured to a leather plate, the leather being adapted to be placed next the hoof. Three iron spurs, two at or near the heel, extending outward, and one at the toe, all adapted to operate between the hoof and shoe, render the pad removable without removing theshoe.
In applying this removable pad the toe-spur is first inserted between the hoof and shoe, then the heel portions of the pad are pressed together, a V-shaped slot allowing such contraction until the heel-spurs may be sprung into place. 7
The plate may be enlarged so as to be pierced by the shoe-nails; but in such case the pad would not be removable.
Referring to the drawing, Arepresents the shoe; B, the rubber; C, the leather plate, and D the spurs.
The V-shaped slot is designated by the letter w.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The removable horseshoe pad herein described, consisting of the rubber body B and leather plate 0, the V-shaped slot at, and spurs D, constructed and adapted to be applied as set forth, for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CLARK A. WELLS.
