This invention pertains to passboks or record books in which entries are to be made from time to time and more particularly to page holding means or book mark by which the page to 5 receive the entry is indicated and the book caused to easily open at such place without the necessity of turning leaves and hunting the desired page.

It is quite common for financial institutions,

banks, loan companies, insurance associations, installment and collection agencies and the like to use passbooks which are presented to receive a record entry when making payments or deposits. Much time is lost by the teller or clerk in leafing through the book seeking the proper page-to receive the entry.

The purpose of the present invention is to save time of the tellers or clerks who may have occasion to make such entries and others who may desire to inspect or audit such entries. The character of the books to which the device is adapted necessitates that the page holder or book mark be not only cheap but that it be enclosed within the confines of the book when closed in order that such books may be stacked or filed in closely compacted lots without interference or entanglement of th'eleaf holding devices of one book with those of another book and without occupying additional space or increasing the bulk of the book.

The object of the present invention is to provide a leaf holder or book mark which may not onlybe economically manufactured but will be more efficient in use, of compact fiat form 00- cupying minimum space and unlikely to get out of repair.

A further object of the invention is to provide a leaf holder which will be entirely contained within the limits of the book covers and hence 40 be .protected against entanglement with other books or adjacent articles.

A further object of the invention is to provide a holder with which succeeding pages are easily and quickly engageable and disengageable therefrom.

lhe character and nature of such books necessitate that the cost thereof must be maintained at a minimum, and hence a further but none the less important object of the invention is to provide a leaf holding device which will not add materially to the cost of such books.

With the above primary and other incidental objects in view, as will more fully appear in the specification, the invention consists of the features of construction, the parts and combinations thereof, and the mode of operation, or their equivalents, as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein is shown the preferred but obviously not necessarily the only form of embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a conventional passbook to which the leaf holder forming the subject matter hereof-has been applied. 10

Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 illustrates a conventional form of passbook such as commonly used by financial institutions of which -I-| are the covers to which a series of leaves 2-2 are attached on a medial fold line 3 for to and fro 25 swinging adjustment to expose opposite sides of succeeding leaves to view.

Much time is lost'in leafing through such books to find the proper place for entry of deposits or payments. The present leaf holder serves to a small metal, or fiber, finger "4, which is bent 5" upon 'itselfsubstantially to parallelism forming a Substantially U-shaped member the arms of which are of unequal length. The material is preferably possessed of some degree of inherent resiliency so that the device will hold its shape 40 and exert a slight clamping pressure upon the engaged leaves.

The shorter arm of the U-shaped detent is fixedly attached to the interior of the book cover I in such relation that the detent device is 10- 45 cated wholly within the margin thereof.

The preferred attachment means comprises an eyelet 5, which is inserted through a hole punched in the cover and crimped or clenched in the usual manner. tachment means, the shorter arm of the detent or holder may be provided with tines or teeth 6 which may be thrust through the book cover and clenched in place to securely hold the leaf holding device in position.

A U-shaped detent or holder is attached to the inner surface of each cover portion I of the book, but in offset relation with each other so that they will not register or interfere when the book is closed.

The bight of the U-shaped member is slightly opened or rounded to form an eye 1, beyond which the arms of the detent member are contracted. This prevents the edges of the leaves being wedged within the bend so tightly as to resist retraction.

The book being opened to the desired place the groups of leaves at each side thereof are removably inserted beneath the longer arms of the U-shaped detent members attached to the opposite cover portions. While the longer arms of the detent devices bear upon the engaged leaves sufiiciently to prevent accidental disengagement, the leaves may be freely withdrawn and reinserted under one or the other of the detent devices.

When the book is closed the detents or leaf holders are entirely concealed and confined within the book covers, and no portions project therebeyond to become entangled with adjacent books Being quite thin and offset relative to each other they do not materially increase the thickness or bulk of the book. Neither will the addition of such detent members materially increase the cost of manufacture of the books. Their use, however, will effect a great saving of time, not'only of the teller or clerk who may otherwise be compelled to leaf through the book to find the place for entry of a deposit or payment, but it will also save the time and temper of those persons who may be waiting their turn to effect a similar transaction.

From the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a device of the character described possessing the particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable, but which obivously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportions, detail construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.

While in order to comply with the statute, the invention has been described in language more or less specific as to structural features, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific features shown, but that the means and construction herein disclosed comprise the preferred form of several modes of putting the invention into effect, and the invention is therefore claimed in any of its forms or modifications within the legitimate and valid scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

1. A pass book or the like including a cover portion foldable upon a medial line to provide sheet supporting sides, and a plurality of superposed leaves attached to the cover portion at the medial fold line for to and fro swinging motion to expose either side of the sheets, and foldable with the cover, characterized by a detent member on the sheet supporting sides of the cover, and spaced from the medial fold line thereof in proximity with the marginal edge of the cover, comprising a member bent upon itself to provide substantially parallel legs for clasping the free margins of separate groups of leaves and located wholly within the cover portion, the detent members on opposite sides of the medial fold line of the cover being off-set out of alignment with each other and one leg of each detent member being secured to the cover, and each detent member being reversely folded into an arcuate bight with its free leg directed toward the leg attached to the cover for gripping engagement with the sheets, the margins of which are insertible under and removable from beneath the overhanging legs of the detent members.
