6 Claims.
The invention relates to adapters for use in connection with incandescent lamp bulbs, and more particularly to adapters for use in adapting a standard lamp socket or receptacle for the reception of an incandescent lamp bulb of smaller size.
The object of the invention is to provide an adapter having a hollow base portion formed of Bakelite or other insulation material open at its lower or rear end and a sheet metal shell including an outer base shell portion surrounding the base and an inner socket shell portion connected at its lower or rear enil to the lower or rear portion of the outer base shell portion, whereby the metal shell may be inserted or removed as a unit from the rear or lower end of the insulation base portion.
A further object is to provide an adapter of the character referred to in which the insulation base portion may be extended upward or forward and a metal reflector may be molded into the same.
Another object of the improvement is to provide an adapter of the character refered to in which the insulation base portion may be extended upwardly or forwardly and formed into a cup.
A still further object is to provide an adapter having such a cup formed upon the insulation base portion, a reflector of sheet metal or the like being molded within the cup.
The above objects, together with others which will be apparent from the drawing and following description, or which may be later pointed out, may be attained by constructing the invention in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of an adaptation of the invention in which a sheet metal reflector is molded into the upper or outer end of the insulation base;
Fig. 2, a sectional elevation of a modification of the invention in which an insulation cup is formed integrally with the insulation base portion; and
Fig. 3, a modification similar to Fig. 2 in which a sheet metal reflector is molded within the insulation cup.
Similar numerals refer to throughout the drawing.
The invention contemplates the provision of a sheet metal shell such as illustrated in detail in Fig. l, which comprises an outer or standard base shell portion indicated generally at H3 and an inner or small socket shell portion ll connected or formed together in a single unit, adapted to be similar parts inserted or removed from the lower or rear end of a hollow open ended insulation base member.
The outer or base shell portion Hi may be substantially cylindric, having its upper or outer end open and preferably slightly flared as indicated at l2, while its rear end portion may be inwardly curved or tapered as at It and closed as by the integral rear wall it excepting for the central opening l5 which may be square or of any desired cross sectional shape.
If desired, the outer or base shell portion may be provided with the usual screw threads 56 such as are ordinarily provided upon lamp bases and the like adapted to be received in. the usual screwthreaded sockets, although if desired these screw threads may be eliminated where it is desirable to insert the base into other types of sockets such as those into which the base is frictionally engaged or otherwise.
The inner or small socket portion of the shell I I is of substantially cylindric shape, being preferably of considerably less length than the outer shell portion I and may be provided with the screw threads H by means of which a small lamp bulb base of ordinary construction may be screwed therein. If desired of course, the screw threads ll may be omitted so that the lamp bulb base may be frictionally retained therein or otherwise, as desired.
The lower or rear end of the inner shell portion Il may be attached to the bottom wall Id of the outer or base shell portion by any suitable means such as the inturned annular flange l8 provided with the tangs l9 which are extended through the central opening I of the bottom wall It and clinched against the underside thereof; or if desired, the inner sheli may be formed integral with the outer shell.
The insulation base 290 may be formed of Bakelite or other suitable insulation material, being of substantially hollow cylindric form having the longitudinal central opening 2| extending entirely therethrough.
This insulation base may be provided with screw threads 23 to be received in the screw threads I6 of the base shell portion l0 and the central opening 2| may be slightly fiared toward the upper or forward end of the base and is of suficient diameter to receive the inner shell portion H.
r The adapter may be arranged to be completed washer 2! being located beneath the upper or forward head 28 of the rivet and an insulation washer 29 being located between the shell and the lower or rear head 30 of the rivet, thus insulating the rivet from the metal shell portion of the base and at the same time providing means for contact with the usual contact lug upon the incandescent bulb and with the usual center contact in the ordinary socket.
As shown in Fig. l, the insulation base 200 may be extended upwardly or forwardly and a reflector 33 of sheet metal or the like may have its lower or rearend molded therein as shown.
As shown in Fig. 2, the insulation base 20d may be extended and formed into a cup as shown at 34 which may form a shade or may house a reflector or the like if desired. Otherwise the base and shell may be of the same construction as above illustrated and described.
In Fig. 3 is shown a form of the invention similar to Fig. 2 excepting that the cup 34' formed upon the insulation base 206 may have a reflector 35 of sheet metal or the like molded therein.
I claim:
1. An adapter for electric lamps and the like including an insulation base having a longitudinal opening of substantially uniform diameter extending entirely therethrough, a sheet metal base shell located around the sides and rear end of said insulation .base, a sheet metal socket shell located within the opening of the insulation base and directly connected at its rear end to said base shell forming a unit therewith, a center contact insulated from both shells and extending through the rear end of the adapter, said insulation base extending forwardly beyond said base shell, and a reflector fixed to the forwardly extending portion of the insulation base.

An adapter for electric lamps and the like including an insulation base, a metal base contact on the outside of said insulation base, and a metal socket shell within the insulation base and electrically connected to said base contact, said insulation base extending forwardly beyond said base contact and formed into a cup of considerably larger diameter than said base.

An adapter for electric lamps and the like including an insulation base having a longitudinal opening of substantially uniform diameter extending entirely therethrough, a sheet metal base shell located around the sides and rear end of said insulation base, a sheet metal socket shell located within the opening of the insulation base and directly connected at its rear end to said base shell forming a unit therewith, a center contact insulated from both shells and extending through the rear end of the adapter, said insulation base extending forwardly beyond the base shell and formed into a cup of considerably larger diameter than said base, and a reflector located within said cup.
6. An adapter for electric lamps and the like including an insulation base, a metal base contact on the outside of said insulation base, and a metal socket contact within the insulation base and electrically connected to said base contact, said insulation base extending forwardly beyond said base contact and formed into a cup of considerably larger diameter than said insulation base.
