Description

Nov. 30, 'l937. F. DALESSANDRO 2,100,943v
PUMP CONSTRUCTION Filed June 24, 1935 fFarr/i fi filessairdra Mm m' ia ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 30, 1937 BNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The invention relates to footwear and more especially to a pump construction.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a pump of this character, wherein the upper has associated therewith a member providing tongues, these being carried inwardly over the upper free edge of said upper preferably at the throat of the vamp of the pump, that is, at the front of the latter so as to provide a smooth and broad contact to relieve any possibility of pinching of the foot at this point in that considerable pressure is brought to bear at such point when the pump is worn and in this manner comfort is assured to the wearer, there being no edges or seams which would have a tendency to cut into the foot while wearing the said pump.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pump of this character, which is simple in construction, possessed of comfortable wearing qualities, pleasing in appearance, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a pump constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view looking from within the pump in an outward direction.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view of the member separate from the pump.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the member in a completed condition.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 2- showing a slight modification of the invention.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a pump possessed of a heel I0, sole II and upper I3, respectively, these being conventional and the said upper interiorly of the pump has associated therewith a lining I2 of standard make-up having a double ply formation.
The upper is of the ordinary or usual construction excepting that formed integrally therewith is a relatively wide member or extension in the nature of a flap I4 made from the leather constituting the said upper and this member is formed by slitting as at I5 and then this flap is slit at I6, the latter allowing the shaping of the flap to the throat area of the vamp without puckering and at the same time creating bendable tongues I'I, these having the inwardly converging rounded free edges I8 while formed in the lining only in its outermost ply in a matching'position with respect to the tongues I1 is an 10 arcuate shaped slot I9 through which is passed the said tongues Il when the member I4 is turned over the free edge of the lining I2 at the throat of the vamp of the pump so that the tongues will be disposed between the layers of said lining I2 with the same in an outwardly divergent spread relation to each other and held permanent by rows of stitches carried through the lining and the said tongues while the turned-over portion of the member I4 confronting the free edge of the lining I2 has enveloped thereby a padding 2I to give a puff effect at the extreme front portion of the throat of the pump A and in this fashion any pinching or unpleasant action upon the foot during the wearing of the pump is entirely eliminated. By carrying the tongues I1 inwardly through the slot I9 to lie between layers of the lining I2 there will be avoided the exposure of the edges of the said tongues I! which would have a cutting effect upon the foot in the wearing of the pump. The lining I2 carries a reinforcement 22 about the slot I9 so as to avoid the breaking away of the slot when the tongues are tucked through the same to lie between the layers of the lining of the pump.
In Figure 6 of the drawing there is shown a slight modification wherein the tongues I! are passed through registering slots 25 in both plies of the lining, each slot corresponding to the slot I9 and such tongues are affixed to the upper 24 at the inner surface thereof after the said tongues I! have been passed through the slots 25,- the reinforcement being indicated at 22 and the padding at 2I, respectively.
The vamp at the edge of the throat of the pump will be perfectly smooth at the side thereof next to the foot in order to assure that the foot will not be tortured and that no edges of material will be next to the foot to cause cutting or pinching action at the instep and also to eliminate wear on hosiery as no seams will be exposed to the stockings. The pump is reinforced at the weakest portion thereof which reinforcement avoids the tearing or breaking away of the pump at the throat of the upper so that the life of the pump is increased and comfort to the wearer is assured.
What is claimed is:
1. A pump comprising an upper, a lining interiorly of the upper and having an arcuate slot at its front, an extension integral with the upper at its uppermost edge adjacent to said slot, said extension having a medial slit therein to provide a pair of tongues for bending downwardly and inwardly through said slot with the tongues in spread apart relation and with the adjacent edges of the tongues engaging the respective ends of the slot, the tongues being of such a length that when disposed in the slot the free ends thereof are disposed at a considerable distance from the upper edge of the vamp of the pump, and means for securing the tongues to the lining.
2. A pump comprising an upper, a lining interiorly of the upper and having an arcuate slot at its front, an extension integral with the upper at its uppermost edge adjacent to said slot, said extension having a medial slit therein to provide a pair of tongues for bending downwardly and inwardly through said slot with the tongues in spread apart relation and with the adjacent edges of the tongues engaging the respective ends of the slot, said slot being of such a width that its edges engage the opposite faces of the tongues, whereby the tongues are given a curved formation to conform to the shape of the foot and the shoe at this point, the tongues being of such a length that when disposed in the slot the free ends thereof are disposed at a considerable distance from the upper edge of the vamp of the pump, and means for securing the tongues to the lining.
