END CONSTRUCTION FOR MINE CARS Filed Sept. l2, 1935 5 Sheets-Sheet 5 Patented Nov. 30,V 1937 2,100,602 Y t END CONSTRUCTION Fon MINE oARs 'i PATENT www Warren V. Johnson and Robert VC. Kepner, Bloomsburg, Pa., assignors to American Car and Foundry Company, New York, N.V Y.. a corporation of New Jersey Y Application september 12, 1935, serial No. 40,223 14 claims. (ci. 10s-364) The present invention deals with improvements in mine and other rail cars and especially with end constructions for the low-floor type of mine car.
Previo-us mine cars have been built in which the end was formed of a rolled section to which was attached members to form a bumper support, other members to form a portion for attachment of the floor and reenforcing members for attach ment of the draw member. These constructions were generally wasteful of material and relatively weak considering the amount of metal that was used in their fabrication.Y It is an object, thereV fore, of the present invention to form a structure in which the metal is Adistributed to greater advantage than heretofore. j
Another object of the invention is the elimination of the end sill as an element.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an end construction which forms part of the car oor. Y
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an end construction capable of carrying the bumper and draft means and which of itself is strong enough to resist the shocks of service.
These and other objects will be apparent to one skilled in the art after a study of the following description, together with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view'of the improved end construction;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the end construction of Fig. 1, parts thereof being broken away to yshow the method of attachment of certain parts;
Fig. 3 is a front elevational View of the construction shown in Fig. 1, certain portions being broken away t0 more clearly show the attachment and relation of certain parts;
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are views similar respectively to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, but, showing a modication thereof;
Fig. 7 is a sectional view of a `still further modication with portions of the bumper block brokenl away to more clearly show the side sill connections; Fig. 8 is a plan view of the construction of Fig.
7, and
Fig. 9 is a front elevational view of the end construction of Fig. '7.
Referring now to the drawings in detail and first to the modification shown in Figs. 1 t0 3; it is seen that the end construction is secured to the side sills S and has a portion provided for the Vsupport and attachment of the floor F.
The end member is formed principally of a formed upper plate 2 and a lower, preferably at, plate 4. The lower plate extends from side sill to side sill and has its end portions'resting upon and rigidly secured to the inturned flanges S of v the side sills, thus forming a rigidV connection ,be-j
tween the sills which will prevent any weavingof the sills relative to each other. The upper plate isV formed with a horizontal portion 8 adapted to be secured Yto the lower plate by means Ill` at points spaced from the edge ofthe lower plate,
thus providing alledgef l2 upon andtowhi'ch the 'Y floor is supported and secured. The plate is ln,- clined upwardly from the lower lhorizontal pori tion to form a part VIll and is then directed outwardlyin a/horizontal plane to form a'portion vlli spaced above the lower plate. ln order to brace the inclined floor portion ashort backing angle is arranged in the angle defined by the botf tom plate 4 and the inclined portion i4 of plate 2, said bracing angle extending transversely ofY the car and having a leg I8 riveted or otherwise secured to the bottom plate and a vertical leg 20 abutting, at its upper edge portion,rthe sloped portion I 4 to which it may be'welded if desired.
Vertically arranged plates or bracing members 22 are provided to prevent spreading of the top and bottom plates and each is formed with a topy edge 24 conforming to the contour of the top plate to which itis welded as at W. The rear end portion of each bracing plate abuts theY vertical f leg 20 of the backing angle, while the lower edge is provided with a tongue or projection 26 adapted to extend through slots in the lower plate in order to be readily welded thereto as at U. The
front Vlower edge of each plate kis also welded to the lower plate as is clearly shown at W.
The top plate 2 is supported at its end portions by angles having one leg 28 underlapping and securedV to the plate, while the other leg 30l is se-V cured tothe side sillfweb, thus giving an addi-A Y tional sidesill connection. 'Iheside sills, bracing plates, top and bottom plates, and backing angle `form three pockets into which suitably shaped wood members 32 maybe inserted and securedin suitably bent as shown'toconform in general to 45 place by through bolts 34. The wood blocks exthe contour of the top plate to which it is secured. The coupler tongue is also formed with a horizontal portion 36, having an ope-ning to receive the coupler pin P and this portion is joined to the remainder of the strap by an inclined portion 38 suitably supported by filler 4@ welded to the tongue and top plate. The usual belt or binder 42 may be provided and is shown as carried by through bolts 44 although this belt may be connected to the bottom plate as is shown in Figs. 4 to 6 and now to be described.
The modication shown in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive is in many respects similar to the form just described in connection with Figs. l to 3 inclusive and the same reference numerals have therefore been used wherever possible to indicate like parts. In this modification the top plate has been changed in order to eliminate the backing angle as a separate element by extending the horizontal portion 8 and connecting this to the sloping part I4 by a vertical portion 2l which corresponds in function with the vertical portions of the brace members shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive and Figs. 7 to 9 inclusive; the construction of Figs. 'l to 9 inclusive being hereinafter particularly described. As will be obvious, in the construction of Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive, the brace 2| is interposed between the lower plate 4 and the inclined portion I4 of the upper plate 2. The pressing of the top plate in the form shown forms, of course, a pocket but, in practice, this llsup with fine coal which becomes packed and forms a continuation of the slope. 'Ihe belt or binder 42 is connected to the bottom plate by means of short rivets or other means 45.
The modilication shown in Figs. 7 to 9 linclusive is a much simpler and more economical constructional than those previously described in that the number of parts has been materially reduced. The bottom plate 52 extends in a single plane from a point adjacent the end of floor plate F to or slightly beyond the ends of the side sills to form a lower support for the bumper block 54. The belt or binder 5% is attached to the bottom plate and to the side sills by rivets 51, thus aiding in the support of the bottom plate whose edge portions are securely fastened to the side sill flanges 58 as clearly shown.
The topI plate is formed of a single piece of Vmetal pressed or otherwise formed to the desired shape and is provided with a rear horizontal portion 60 through which securing means 62 pass in order to tie the bottom plate, top plate and floor plate together. Incline 64 extends upwardly from the rear portion of the plate and then horizontally outward as at 66 over a majority of its area to provide an upper protecting portion for the bumper block. Pressed in the upper horizontal portion is a coupler pocket formed with inclined back wall B8, side Walls 'l0 and top wall 12 which is parallel to the portion 66. The top wall has weldedthereto a at plate 14 in order to provide suiicient bearing metal for the coupler pin P. The side walls are cut back as at 'i6 in order lto permit application and movement of the bumper cap B, which is of usual design. A short pressed channel having a horizontal flange 18, web 8D and inclined flange 82 securely ties the top and bottom plates together and forms a backing for the wood bumper block previously mentioned. It is necessary that this channel be short enough to allow insertion of a backing tool between its end and the side sill in order that the rivets connecting the end construction to the side sill may be driven. The
edges of the top plate are bent downwardly as at 84 to receive securing means 86 which fasten the plate to the side sill. It is seen that with this construction an end member is fabricated of four pieces which are easily formed, require a minimum of labor and produce a structure of great strength.
rIt is obvious to one skilled in the art that various modications of the end construction are possible and that such modications may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims which, rather than the illustrative description, limit the invention.
