This invention relates to metal car roofs of the type having hatchways extending therethrough.
The principal objects of the present invention are to provide such hatchways with metal f hatch 4 5 frames that can be readily applied to existingroofswithout material alterations thereof, to provide for'the'ready removal and replacement of the hatch ^frames without disturbing the roof l sheets and to provide forsimplicity and economy 10 of construction. The invention consists in providing the roof with a cover sheet adapted to be vsuperimposed on the hatch sheet thereof and provided with ahatch frame adapted to register with the .hatch opening in said hatch sheet.- In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specicationand wherein like symbols refer to like parts whereverthey occur,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of a car roof provided with a hatch construction embodying my invention, e 4 Y Fig. 2,is,an enlarged vertical transverse section through one-half the roofat' one of the hatchways on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, v 1 f 4 Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the roof at one of the hatchways on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1,
` Fig. 41s an enlarged-fragmentary section simi- `lar to Fig. 2 through one side of the hatch con.
struction,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary section similar to Fig. 3 through one side of saidhatch construction, Y Fig. 6 is a fragmentary cross-section through the roof at .the eaves, the section being taken through one of the depressed end portions of the cover sheet onthe line 8 6 of Fig. 1; and Fig. '1 is a perspective view of one end portion of the cover sheet with the hatch frame detached therefrom. 1 i
'I'he car roof illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises end and intermediate roof sheets I and 2, respectively, that extend from side plate Sto side plate 3 of the car with their eaves lends supported on and secured,v as by 'rivets 4, to the outstanding top flanges of eaves angles `5,
Whose depending flanges are suitably secured to the upstanding inner side flanges of said=side plates. The end and intermediate roof sheets 'are provided' Withdepending eaves flanges 6,- which overhang the-outer edges of the eaves angles 5 and upstanding side marginal anges 'i that are straddled by a seam cap 8 that is suitably secured to said anges. At the end of the car. the end sheet I is supported on and suitably secured to thexoutstanding topiiange of an Vangle 9 whose d ependingange is'suitably secured to an'end plate I0.
As shownin-Flg. 1, the end roof sheet I, hereinafter referred to as the hatch sheet, has one or more hatch openings therein which lead into the 5 interior of the car through a wooden hatch frame Il located below said opening and supported between two wooden carlines I2. Each woodenhatch frame is provided with a sheet metal lining o I3;" and the hatch sheet is provided around the l0 hatch opening therein with a flange I4 that is bent downwardly over the upper margin of said lining. The roof is provided with a ceiling I5 and has asuitable-roof insulation I6 interposed between said ceiling and the roof sheets. 15
superimposed on the hatch sheet I is a metal cover sheet A that extends from end to end of the hatch sheet and has depending eaves fianges I 'I that overhang the -depending eaves flanges 6 thereof' and hatch openings that register with 20 the respective hatch openings therein. Mounted lin each of the hatch openings in the cover sheet A- is a metal hatch frame B that extends below said cover sheet into the anged hatch .opening in the hatchv sheet I and upwardly above saidv 25 cover sheet where it terminates in an outstanding ange I8 that constitutes .a seat for al hatch cover (not shown). As shown in the drawings, the metal hatch frame B is rigidly secured tothe cover sheet A by a weld I 9 of'added metalthat "30 extends continuously around the hatch opening therein in the angle between saidframe and the upper surface of said sheet.- v
I' The cover sheet A is preferably of inverted channel-shaped cross-section with outstanding 35 side marginal or base anges 20 at the lower edges of its side walls that bear upon the hatch sheet I from end to end thereof. As shown in the drawings, said cover sheet has depressed end portions 2| that rest on the 'hatch sheet above the 40 eaves angles 5, and are held down on said hatch sheet yby the rivets 4 that secure the latter to said angles.y 'I'hese .depressed portions\ 2| ,are adapted and arranged to form downwardly openl ing hollow ribs 22 adjacent to and midway of 45 the side margins of said cover sheet. As shown in the drawings, these ribs 22 of the" cover sheet are curved downwardly and merge into the depending eavesanges I1 thereof, which flanges are offset outwardly opposite said ribs to provide 50 drainage and Ventilating openings 23 between ends of the cover sheet and hatch sheet.
, By the arrangement described, the hatch frame B is rigidly secured to the cover sheet A and has its lower end portion fitting in the flanged hatch 55 ,ily applied to the car roof withoutl material" alteration. thereof. The cover sheet can be readily removed without removing the hatch sheet and A without disturbing the main hatchway construction of the rooiI merely by shearing the rivets 4 that secure the cover sheet and hatch sheet to the eaves angles 5. The channel-shaped crosssectional shape ofA the cover sheet increases its rigidity and load carrying capacity; and the hollow ribs 22 of -said sheet serve to stiien and strengthen the eaves end portions thereof and provide for ventilation and drainage.
