Description

Nov. 23, 1937.
s. A. HARRISON BUTTON BACKER Original Filed Dec. 3, 1934 INVENTOR.
Sara): A. Harri s 0 n BY A TTORNEY.
Patented Nov. 23, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application December 3, 1934, Serial No. 755,711 Renewed October 9, 1937 4 Claims.
This invention has to do with button backers for securing buttons to garments and the like and particularly for securing buttons to delicate furs of fur garments.
Buttons secured to fur garments such as coats and the like easily pull off and tear the delicate leather of the fur to which they are attached. With expensive furs a tear of this nature involves expensive repairs and may result in suchvserious damage to the fur as to ruin the value thereof. It is therefore the object of my invention to provide a button backer that will securely hold the button on the garment and that will prevent tearing and damaging of the leather of the fur by a pull or strain on the button.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing where- Figure 1 shows a front view of a portion of a fur garment With a button secured thereto.
Figure 2 shows a view of the back side of a portion of a fur garment with the button backer secured thereto and showing the ends of a piece of tape, for securing a button, sewed to the backer. v
Figure 3 is a cross section of a portion of a fur garment with the button backer and button secured thereto taken on line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the reference numeral l indicates a portion of fur of a fur coat or other garment and reference numeral 1 I indicates a button having a looped wire l2 on the back side thereof, said wire having the ends securely imbedded in the button.
A piece of tape I3 is threaded through the wire loop I2 and is received in an opening or slit M in the leather l5 of the fur ID. A button backer I6 of fabric or the like, preferably of 40 stout canvas cloth, is provided behind the leather 15 of the fur. The backer I6 is provided with a pair of spaced holes adjacent the center thereof which are reinforced with eyelets H and I8, said eyelets having ends l9 and 20 respectively of the tape threaded therethrough. A knot 2| is tied in the tape on the back side of the backer to draw the button to the backer and the ends l9 and 20 are sewed to said backer. The backer is sewed securely to the leather l5 of the fur by a plurality of stitches 22 which bind the backer and the leather together at many points over a relatively large area of the leather adjacent to the opening l4 thus distributing any strain or pull on the buttonover a comparatively large 55 area of the leather and therebypreventing the tearing or injuring of the leather of the fur, said strains or pulls being transferred first to the backer to which the button is attached and then to the leather of the fur.
The backer therefore provides means for securely fastening the button to the garment and for preventing tearing or damaging of said garment at the point of attachment of said button.
The use of the invention is not limited to fur coats or other garments but may be used generally for securing buttons to other materials and it is to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in other relations, and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having described my invention what I claim is;
1. In combination with a garment and a button, a button backer for securing the button to the garment, said button backer comprising a piece of fabric and having a plurality of reinforced holes adjacent the center thereof, a strip of tape for tying said button to the button backer, said tape being threaded to the button and through the reinforced holes of the button backer, tied, and the ends thereof sewed to the button backer, and means for securing the button backer to the garment over a wide area surrounding the point of attachment of the button to the garment.
2. In combination with a garment and a button, a button backer having a plurality of holes adjacent the center thereof and spaced relatively close together, means associated with the button and extending through the holes to the under side i and then laterally thereof for securing the button to the backer, and means for securing the hacker to the garment over a wide area surrounding the holes.
3. In a device of the class described, a button, a button backer having a plurality of open,- ings therein adjacent the center thereof, and means for securing the button to the button backer, said means comprising an extended element connected intermediately with the button and extending through the openings to the under side of the hacker and laterally of the openings in holding association with said under side of the backer.
4. In'a device of the class described, a button,
a button backer, and connecting means associ-- ated with the button and backer for securing the former to the latter, said means having the button secured intermediately thereon and having end portions received through the backer and extending outwardly of the place of reception through said backer in holding association with the under side thereof.
SARAH ANN HARRISON.
