Description
Nov. 23, 1937. 1` c. J. STRAHAN FULL FASHTONED HOSIERY Filed March 8, 1955 ,asi
u QAK UU @Mmmm MVO @U AmO MU Patented ,New 23, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT-OFFICE 5 Claims.
My invention relates to an improvement in hosiery, and more particularly to full-fashioned hosiery.
Heretofore in the manufacture of hosiery and especially of full-fashioned hosiery, it has been customary to narrow the foot portion of the stockin'g by transferring loops through the medium of narrowing fingers on the footing machine. This narrowing of the foot portion of the stocking, resulting in characteristic narrowing marks in the sole portion and also in the toe portion, is usually started one and a half (1l/2) inches to two (2) inches from the seam selvage or the rear-most point of the stocking. This results in the foot portion of the stocking being narrowed (or fabric being taken out of the stocking) directly under the ball of the heel, developing atendency for the heel splicing to be dragged down under the counter of the shoe in order to give the wearer sufficient room in the foot of the stocking.
Additional narrowing of the foot of the stocking is commenced when the toe portion is reached, but common practice takes too much fabric out of the toe. This results in the toe portion of the stocking being unduly cramped, again developing a tendency for the heel splicing to be dragged down under the counterof the shoe in order to give the wearer sufficient room in stocking.
Both of these cases of faulty narrowing, both in the sole portion and in the toe portion cause additional friction, a poor nt, and the quick wearing out of the toe and the heel.
Now it is the* object of my invention to provide hosiery so constructed as to supply suicient material in the heel, sole, and toe portions of a stocking so as to prevent the dragging down of the heel splicing thereby securing a better fit, and hence, better wear. A
Having now indicated in a general way nthe nature and purposeof my invention I will prothe foot of the ceed to a description of a preferred embodiment thereof with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:-
Figure 1 is a detail view of a portionof the toe of a stocking construction according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a side view partly broken away of a stocking embodying the two points in my invention, namely, Vthe proper placing of the narrowings in the sole portion and the proper of the narrowings in the toe portion.
Figure 3 is a front view .partly broken away of the small and large narrowingifingers on a footing machine.
:of untransferred loops.
The rst part of my invention starts the narrowing operation at a distance preferably in excess of two (2) inches and preferably up to three (3) inches from the seam selvage, as shown at A' in Figure 2. By so starting'the narrowing operation, sufficient material is left at all times for the ball of the heel and fabric is not taken out of the foot portion of the stocking until the bottom of the arch or narrow portion of the foot is reached. v i
The second part of my invention has to do with supplying more fabric between the lines of narrowings in the toe as shown at B and C' in Figure 2.
By referring to Figure 3. a sketch of the narrowing bar on the footing machine is shown with the large narrowing fingers designated as W and Z andthe small narrowing lingers designated as X and Y. These Yoperate in the conventional manner, as will be found described, for example, in the, second paragraph of lpage 1 of United States Patent No. 1,935,406 to Lieberknecht.
By removing narrowing points between the two points F and G and between the two points H and J in the large narrowing ngers W and Z respectively, additional fabric is permitted to remain in the toe portion, the additional fabric being the amount of fabric or wales contained between the two lines D .and C in Figure 2;
'I'he number of narrowing points removed from these large narrowing fingers W and Z may vary from one up to thirty or more, but I have found in actual practice that the removal of from five to twenty points gives preferably the best results, depending upon how much more fabric it is desirable to put in the toe portion of the foot, for any specic construction.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent Ais:-
1. A diamond point toe construction for a `stocking comprising a, diamond point area of transferred loops anked on both sides by areas 2. A diamond point toe construction for a stocking comprising a diamond point area of transferred loops flanked on both sides by areas of untransferred loops and one of said untransferred loop areas being bordered on its other side by a second transferred loop arean 3. In a full-fashioned stocking, a toe construction comprising a band of untransferred loops extending longitudinally and toward 'the point of band having a substantially constant number of `the toe-enveloping sheath of the stocking, said.,
loops throughout each course thereof and being bounded on one sideby transferred loops and on its other longitudinal side by transferred loops both sets of loops having been transferred in the same direction.
4. In a stocking, a toe portion having a, longi-y tudinally extending band therein, said band being of substantially uniform width as measured along the courses thereof, and being bounded on one side by a series of transferred loops-displaced one loop sidewise in each successive course, and said band on its other side being bounded by a series of transferred loops displaced two loops sidewise in each successive course and in the same direction as said first-mentioned series of transferred loops. v
5. In a, stocking, a toe sheathing havingy an upper tapered portion and a tapered lower or sole portion joined thereto, said portions being united by an area of untransferred loops positioned intermediate thereto, a series of open work loops bounding said area of untransferred loops, on one.
side, and a diamond pointed area, forming a part of said upper portion, positioned adjoining said open-Work loops andbetween the same and the main body of said upper portion, saiddiamond pointed section having a substantially constant number of loops throughout each course thereof except atits pointed tip portion, and the wales thereof running at an angle to the wales of said main body portion and to the Wales of the untransferred loop area positioned intermediate 15 said row of open-Work loops and said sole portion.
