IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET TRAVELING-BOXES.
Specification forming part of- Letters Patent No. 209,933, dated November 12, 1878; application filed I October '7, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. SoMnns, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inPocket Traveling- Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following specification is such a full, clear, and exact description thereof as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of travelin g paraphernalia adapted for carriage in the pocket; and consists in an improved construction of a pocket-box, adapted not only for the reception of various articles of utility, but provides for the safe carriage and protection of an indicating mechanism, all of which will be more particularly hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the box; Fig. 2, a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 represents, in plan and section, a game indicator or counter and Figs. 4 and5 show, by similar views, a modified form of the indicating mechanism. 4
In carrying out this invention I form the body A and cover E of the box by swaging them from a metal blank cut from a sheet of such material or any equivalent thereof, and connect said body and cover by a hinge-joint, so that the latter. may be conveniently opened to gain access to the interior or main compartment B. This compartmentB is adapted to contain and protect matches, tinder, flint, and steel, confections-as trochespilules,'and other articles of utility or for consumption, and it may be subdivided, as such articles or its use may requlre.
I provide the cover or body of the box with a central recess or cup-like depression, constituting an auxiliary compartment, 0, which is furnished with a suitable support for an indicatin g mechanism, as the compass shown in Fig. 2, which indicating mechanism may be protected by a glass or other covering plate, D. The preferable mode of providing the auxiliary, or indicator-containing compartment 0 is to swage the same out of the blank constituting the cover or body of the box by the wellknown operation of swaging; but said compartment C may be made separately, and be inserted in a suitableopening made to receive it. The pointer or index-hand 2 of" the indicator is poised upon the post 3, secured to the compartment, so as to swing-freely thereon and I move over the scale-plate'4.
In the modification, Fig. 3, the indicating mechanism has the form of a game-counter, the compartment 0 having the inside surface of its bottom marked to form a scale-plate, 4, and the pointer or hand 2 being poised on the post 3 so as to swing thereon; but the structure of this pointer is such thatit forms a spring, which bears on the scale-plate 4 with sufficient friction to hold the pointer in any position to which it may be moved by hand.
. state of rest, all of which will be readily understood.
By my improved construction a traveling- I box having a main compartment, B, adapted to carry many and various articles of use, is provided with an auxiliary compartment, 0, forming a part of the general structure, in which is supported an indicating mechanism, so that the latter is not only safely housed in a protecting-case, but said case affords a most convenient carriage for the same, which permits a ready use of the indicator.
These delicate indicating mechanisms, com
monly carried loosely in the pocket with ya rious articles, as keys and the like, from con tact with which they are often injured or de stroyed, are completely protected by my improved construction of box or case, while being so supported as to be readily handled and quickly used, being so enveloped by the compartment O as to be completely shielded from contact with other articles in the pocket, while I said compartment does not materially abridge the carrying capacity of the box or case itself. Having thus described my invention, what ment, 0, from the bottom of which projects a central post, to which is attached the indexhand or pointer of a compass, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL M. SOMERS.
