Description

Nov. 16,' 1937. v. E. GREEN UNDERG'RYIENT AID THE LIKE Filed 0611.22, 1955 lNvENToR VERNoR E. GREEN ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 16, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE UNDERGARMENT AND THE LIKE Application October 22, 1935, Serial No. 46,063
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in undergarments such as drawers, shorts, trunks, skirts and the like, and is particularly directed to an improved waistband for such garments.
Several attempts have been made to provide undergarments of the character indicated with elastic waistbands for supporting the garment on the wearer with the desired comfort and yet be sufficiently elastic to adjust itself to the wearer and the movements of the wearer. Some of these prior structures provide a waistband which is composed entirely of elastic; others provide a Ystrip or section of elastic set into an inextensible waistband; while others secure a strip of elastic over the inextensible band at one point, etc.
I garment having a waistband comprising a double wall, the inner wall being of circumferentially extensible material, the outer wall comprising a section of inextensible material and a section of elasticv material, the ends of the two sections of the outer wall being secured to each other to provide a continuous band superimposed on the inner wall. This provides a structure which conforms itself nicely to the waist of the wearer, and at the same time avoids gathers in the waistband which has been and is an objectionable feature present in nearly all garments of this type as heretofore constructed.
In the accompanying drawing wherein I have illustrated a garment made in accordance with one embodiment of my invention:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of my improved garment;
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, l designates the body of a garment made of the usual knitted fabric having its wales extending vertically and having the usual legs 2 and 3. The upper edge of the garment is provided with a relatively wide waistband of my improved construction comprising an inner wall 4 of knitted fabric material having its Wales extending vertically whereby to render the same extensible circumferentially of the garment and inextensible` longitudinally of the garment; and an outer wall 5 the maj or portion 6 of which is of knitted fabric material having its wales extending horizontally whereby to render the same inextensible. The outer wall 5 is provided with a section 'l of elastic material of a width corresponding to the width of -the waistband, the ends of this section being stitched to the ends of the inextensible material at 8 and 9 to provide one continuous band.
The upper edges of the two walls 4 and 5 are bound with binding l0 which is folded over these edges and secured thereto by stitching Il. The lower edges of the two walls of the waistband are secured to each other by stitching as shown at l2.
The garment illustrated is provided with the usual button front I3 but it is to be understood that the garmentmay be of the continuous band type if desired. 20
It will be appreciated that due to the inner wall being of extensible material, when the waistband expands and contracts there will be no puckering, shirring or wrinkling up of the inner band, as is the case where inextensible material is employed under the elastic strip, thereby providing a garment which is uniformly smooth and comfortable and which provides a neat finished appearance.
It will also be appreciated that further comfort is provided due to the fact that the elastic strip 'l does not contact the body of the wearer, but instead the body is in contact with the soft fabric of the inner wall 4.
It is to be understood that while I have illustrated and described one embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to this precise structure as obviously various changes and modiflcations may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is:-
A garment of the class described comprising a body portion of knitted material having wales eX- tending vertically and adapted to cover the lower body portion and crotch of the wearer, a double walled waist band, the walls of which are stitched to each other throughout the upper and lower edges thereof, the front section of said waist band comprising superimposed plies of knitted mate-V rial, one ply having its wales extending vertically, the other ply adjacent the front of the garment having its wales extending horizontally whereby to confine the said first named ply and to render the front section of the Waist band inextensible, the back of the waist band comprising a horizontally extensible piy of knitted matera :and an at least as origwhen contracted as the portion elastic member superimposed thereon, said elastic of the inner wall on which it is superimposed member being secured at its ends to the inextenthereby to provide a smooth and unwrinkled sible front section, whereby to provide a back inner Wall. section, the outer Wall of which is elastic and the VERNOR E. GREEN. 5 inner Wall extensible, the elastic member being
