This invention relates to a combined cutter and advertising device and; has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to for cutting open a cigarette package, as well as for displaying the package of cigarettes or other article of merchandise for advertising purposes.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combined cutter and advertising device for the purpose referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, attractive, thoroughly efiicient in its use, capable of distinctly displaying for advertising purposes an article of merchandise, having means for holding a package of cigarettes prior to and after the latter has been cut open, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing objects in view and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and as are illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device,
Figure 2 is a section on line 2--2, Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a section on line 33, Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the cutter blade, and
Figure 5 is a sectional detail illustrating the cutter blade.
The device consists of a unit having a base section I and a top section 2. The said sections are formed of any suitable material, contrasting or otherwise. The sections l, 2 may be of any suitable contour, but preferably are as shown, rectangular. The section I has its end edges 3, 4 and its side edges 5, 6 inwardly beveled from its lower to its upper face. The section 2 has its end edges I, 8 and its side edges 9, lllinwardly beveled from its lower to its upper face. The upper face of section I is of the same area as the lower face of section 2. The height of section I is less than that of section 2 and preferably the height of the latter will correspond to the thickness of a cigarette package. The section 2 is mounted in superimposed relation upon the section I. The bottom of the side and end edges of section 2 are flush with the top of the side and end edges of the section I. The sections I and 2 are secured together by spaced holdfast devices H extendingupwardly. through. section I and engaging in the section 2; The devices- Ha are countersunk in the bottom 01% section I. The securing of the sections l and2; together provides a rectangular unit having its side and end edges beveled inwardly from its bottom to its upper face.
The upper face of section l, between its lengthwise median and one side and its transverse median and one end, is formed with a plurality of spaced sockets l2. The section 2, lengthwise thereof, is formed with a rectangular opening 13 having its outer end wall l4 arranged in close proximity to the end I of said section 2. The section 2, between the end 8 thereof and the inner end wall l5 of opening I3, is formed with a circular opening l6 having its circular side wall ll spaced from the sides-and end 8 of section 2, as well as from the wall [4. The diameter of the opening I6 is approximately equal to the width of a cigarette package. The wall I! of opening It at its lower end is rabbeted for a part of its circumference, as at 3. The sockets l2 open into the rabbeted portion [8 of wall IT. The section I coacts with the opening l3 to form the'unit with a rectangular compartment for receiving the article of merchandise to be displayed or the cigarette package prior and subsequent to cutting it open. The section 1 provides an end wall for the opening [6, and coacts with the opening Hi to provide a circular compartment for receiving a cigarette package inserted endwise with the wall I! in snug engagement with the side edges of the package. Thus the inserted package may be rotated within the recess, and when so rotated, the snug engagement of the wall I! with the side edges of the package will prevent lateral displacement of the package. The section I coacts with the rabbeted portion l8 of wall I! to form a segmental shaped socket l9 which opens into the cutter compartment.
Mounted in the socket l9 andpermanently extending into the package receiving compartment is a cutter 20 formed of a substantially ovoidal shaped blade 2| having a substantially segmental shaped cutting edge 22. The blade 2| in proximity to its non-cutting edge 23 is formed with a plurality of spaced openings 24. Positioned against each face of blade 2| is a narrow spacer strip. The strips are indicated at 25, 26 and have their outer side edges flush with the edge 23 of the blade. The ends of the strips align with each other as well as being flush with the end terminal portions of the edge 22. The strips are arranged within and are of a width and length to correfin spond to the width and length of the socket l9.
seats upon the bottom wall of socket I9. The strips are formed with aligningopenings 21 which register with the openings 24. Secured in the sockets l2 and in the openings 24 and 21 are anchoring pins 28 functioning to couple the cutter 20 to section I. The strip 25 acts to maintain the blade 2| permanently spaced above the bottom, formed by'section I of the cutter compartment. The strip 26 acts to permanently space the blade 2| from the top wall of socket IS. The strips 25;
26 are flush with the wall I! of opening [6.
To open a cigarette package, the package is placed in the cutter compartment with the end thereof to be opened down; and with the cutter 20 disposed at one side of the package. By turning the package within the opening l6 either clockwise or counter-clockwise, the stationary blade 2| cuts the end of the package. The strip 25'acts to control the point of the package in which the cut is made, and it is of a thickness to prevent the severing of the cigarettes when the package is cut open.
What I claim is:
A device for the purpose set forth, a base section, a top section superimposed upon and fixedly secured to the base section, said top section being formed with a vertically disposed opening, the wall of said opening coacting with a part of the upper face of the base section to provide a vertically disposed recess opening at its upper end, the lower portion of the wall of said opening being formed with a rabbet for a part of its length, said rabbet coacting with another part of the upper face of the base section to provide a socket opening into said recess at the bottom of the latter, a cutter mounted in and extended from said socket intosaid recess, superposed strips within and for spacing the cutter from the top and bottom walls of said socket, and spaced means carried by and extending upwardly from the base section, passing through said cutter and engaging with said strips for anchoring the cutter to said base section.
