This invention relates to a ticket band severing mechanism for a ticket dispensing or issuing device and the present application is a divisional application of my application Serial Number 14,314 filed April 2, 1935 for Ticket issuer for pin ball games, now Patent 2,046,084 granted June 30, 1936.
The improved ticket issuer and severing mechanism comprises in its preferred embodiment, a unit which may be, if desired, associated with an amusement game, of the pin ball type. The issuer is operated by an electric motor device, such as an electric motor, electromagnet, or a solenoid; and, such motor device may be made operative when motor switches are closed by the ball playing pieces. Such switches may be remotely located relative to the unit. In other situations, as in theatre ticket dispensers, only one motor switch need be provided with the motor device operative whenever the switch is manually closed.
The illustrative type of unit to be herein disclosed embodies an electric motor having a shaft geared todrive another shaft carrying means to move to and fro, a dispenser member including connections for turning a pin Wheel in a step by step manner for moving, a perforatedticket web to a dispensing position. It is for'such organization that the severing mechanism of this invention is particularly provided.
The primary object of the invention. is to provide an improved ticket severing mechanism for the ticket band dispenser.
Another object is to provide such severing mechanism operating automatically in timed -relation to the movement of the ticket band so that the tickets will be accurately severed from the band.
Still another object is to provide a simple,.foolproof severing means, which will operate efficiently and not get out of order.
These and other objects are achieved by locating a knife in a position over the point of the ticket band where it is to be severed, said knife being-spring pressed and normally held in inoperative position by a trigger means. A cam wheel or the like serves, in timed relation, with the rotation of a drive shaft, to cause release of the knife to severing position and also serves to reset the knife, all as will later more fully appear. For the sake of illustration, the dispenser unit is shown carried in a cabinet l0, having a front Wall H provided with an opening l2 for the discharge of the dispensed and severed tickets, said cabinet also having a horizontal fioor l3 on which the unit is to be carried.
The unit includes a mounting plate M and the ticket web moving means comprises a Wheel or drum l5, having pins l6 spaced angularly the proper distance apart. Said Wheel is turnable on a horizontal transverse shaft l6 journaled in a bracket I! mounted on the floor l3 or plate M, as desired. The lower end of the wheel l5 projects downwardly through an opening formed in the floor i3 and plate M as shown in Figure 4, there being provided a lower cover plate 18 as shown, made fast to the under side of the floor is. A web of tickets !9 is drawn from a source of supply, not shown, and trained over the wheel 15, with the web formed at proper spaced intervals with pairs of holes 20 to fit over the pins 16' on the wheel.
Said web !9 is guided between the top side of the Wheel l5 and a guide strip 2! which extends horizontally in the direction of the wall II, as shown, there also being provided a lower complementary guide strip 22 so that the wheel l5 when turned step by step, as will later appear,
serves to push the web between the strips 2|, 22
to the point where the tickets are to be severed therefrom and be dispensed. Said strips 2!, 22 are formed as part of, or carried by, a housing 23 which along one edge carries a vertical wall 24 including a right angularly bent end 25 delineating the terminal ends of the guide strips 2!, 22. The Wall ll carries a discharge throat piece 26 including a ticket web deflector 2'1, the entrance to said throat 26 as shown in Figure 4, being ar-. ranged in spaced relation to the discharge end of the guide strips 2|, 22. In the space thus provided, the knife later to be described operates when severing the ticket web. The manner of driving the pin wheel l5 will next be described.
A motor 28 of the electric type is mounted on the plate l4 to one side of the throat 26, said motor including a shaft 29 carrying a worm pinion 38 for driving a relatively large Worm gear 3| carried fast on a transverse shaft 32 journaled in a bracket structure 33, as best appears in Figure 3. Said shaft 32 extends laterally in the direction of the housing 23 and at its terminal end carries fast thereon a blank wheel 34, carrying an eccentric roller pin 35.
This pin or roller 35 as the wheel 34 turns is adapted to move into a vertical slot 36 formed in the upright wall portion 31 of a horizontal dispenser slide member 38. Said member 38 is mov able to and fro in a guide 39 formed on the plate I4. This slide 38 carries a pin 40 to which is connected one end of a spring 4|, the other end of which is connected to a pin and stopblock 42 mounted on the plate l4 as shown in Figure 4. Said block 42 serves to limit the stroke of the slide 38 in one direction. 7 7
The Wall 31 carries a pivot pin 43 for pivotally mounting one end of a link 44, the other end of which is pivotally connected at 45 to the upper end of a crank arm 46 in turn pivotally mounted on the shaft I6 to rock a second arm 41 loose on the shaft |6.- This arm 41 carries a pivotally mounted pawl 48 adapted when the link 44 is pulled toward the wall I I, to engage a notch in a ratchet wheel 49 secured fast to the adjacent side of the-drum wheel l6.
Thus, through the motor drive connections just described, the pawl 48 serves to turn the ratchet wheel 49 one ticket length step at a time a to turn the drum wheel I5 a like amount and thereby advance theticket web a ticket length step at a time through the guide strips 2|, 22 toward the throat 26. When the discharge end of the web strikes the deflector 21 a ticket is in proper position in the space between the end of the guide strips 2|, 22 and the throat entrance to be severed: A ticket severing means is provided to operate in timed relation to the movement of the web to sever the tickets at the said point described. Such severing mechanism will now be described.
The wall 25 adjacent the housing 23 carries a pivot pin 58 for pivotally mounting a knife 5 l disposed transversely over the ticket web when held 5 in inoperative position; The knife carries a pin 52 against which bears one leg of a relatively strong spring 53 mounted on the pin 58 as best shown in Figure 3. Said spring 53 has another leg stopped against a stop pin 54 mounted on the Wall-25. The heel portion of the knife is formed with a trigger extension or boss 55 over which is engaged one end of a lever 56 pivoted intermediately of its ends by means of a pin 51 carried on the-wall 25. The opposite end of said lever 56 rests on a horizontal pin 58 carried rigidly at the lower end of a vertical plate 59 in turn carried by means of guide pins 68 on the wall and slots 6| formed in the plate 59 so that the plate 59 is carried for up and down free movement on the wall 25. The lower end of this plate 59 rides on the periphery of a cam wheel 62 mounted fast on the shaft 32 to turn therewith, said cam wheel having a drop off notch 63 for a purpose presently to appear.
A stationary shear guide is carried on the housing .23 to cooperate with the knife. This guide as shown in Figure 2 has'an inclined edge which is engaged by the knife to clear the knife fromthe cut strip and prevent adhesion of tho knife and strip in the well known manner. The flush ends of the guide strips 2|, 22 form a further stationary shear edge for cooperation With the movable knife 5|. The mode of operation of the improved mechanism including the ticket severing means will now be described.
The ticket web is trained from a source of supply, not shown, over the pin wheel l5 as shown in Figure 4 with the web passed between the two guide strips 2|, 22. When the circuit for the motor 28 is closed as in Seiden et al. Patent No. 2,010,966 issued August 13, 1935, the same operates to turn the gearing 38, 3| to drive the shaft 32 and blank wheel 34. Thus the pin roller 35 enters the slot 36 to move the wall 31 and slide 38 from its, starting position shown in Figure 4 to the right as appears in said figure, against the pull of the spring 4|. Therefore, the link 44 is pulled to the right likewise, causing crank 46 and arm 41 to operate and through the pawl 48 push or turn the ratchet Wheel 49 one step. The web l9 always projects one ticket length into the throat 26 with the end thereof abutting the deflector 21. The camwheel 62 which also turns with the shaft 32 in the starting position of the parts is so positioned that as soon as the wheel 62 turns to its release position the plate slide 59 drops off the high spot thereof into the notch 63 of said wheel. As seen in Figure 3, due to pressure of the spring 53 the lever 56 at its right hand end drops with the plate 59 causing the left hand end of the lever 56 to raise and permit the trigger stop 55 also to raise. As a result the spring 53 rapidly snaps the knife lever 5| down through the ticket web so that the ticket projected into the throat 26 as described, is instantly severed. Such severed ticket then dropsby gravity down the inclined bottom of the throat 26 to be dispensed through the open ng l2 inthe front wall I of the cabinet l0.
Themotor in practice is only energized for an instant so that no sooner has it caused movement of the slide 38 it is dead again and the spring 4| is operative to restore the slide 38 to its'starting position abutting the stop block 42. The motor time of operation is controlled in practice so that the parts are always set in such position as properly to start the dispenser oper-, ation and the plate 59 is on the high spot of the cam wheel ready to drop into the notch 63 to work the knife.
As the cam wheel 62 completes its revolution the plate 59 is wedged or cammed up to its raised position shownin Figure 3, causing the left hand end of the lever 56 as viewed in said figure to press down on the extension 55 to lock the knife 5| in the raised position. Of course, this knife 5| is raised immediately it has operated bythe action of the cam wheel so, that the knife is out of the way by the time the pin wheel |5 has moved another ticket length of the web l9 against the deflector 21.
If desired the motor 28 can be held energized as long as desired by any appropriate switch and consequently the tickets may be dispensed and, severed as a continuous operation, the parts being soarran'ged that the dispensing or web moving operation is in timed relation to the severing operation.
It is the intention to cover all changes and modifications of the illustrative example of the invention herein disclosed which do not in material respects constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention as covered in the appended claims.
What, is claimed is: 1. Ina. ticket. issuer, an electric motor operable when energized, a shaft driven by the motor, a
cam wheel carried on and driven by the shaft, a.
reciprocable member operable by means driven from said shaft, a pin wheel driven from the ,reciprocable member for engaging a perforated band of tickets to advance the same across a guide surface to a point of discharge, a knife blade fulcrumed adjacent one end for pivotal movement and held in inoperative position adjacent the band, means engaging the knife blade to hold a rotary wheel, guide means associated with the 7 wheel to guide a ticket band over a portion of the wheel, said band and wheel having interlocking portions for causing positive advance of the band to a point of discharge, means operable from the reciprocatory dispensing member for rotating the wheel, the guide means terminating adjacent the discharge point for the tickets to be issued and including a stationary shear means, a movably mounted knife co-operable with said shear means to sever the tickets from the band, spring means directly engaging and urging said knife to cutting position, means engaging the knife to hold the same in an inoperative position, rotary means driven by the motor means in timed relation to the movement of the reciprocatory member, and a member engaging and controlled by said rotary means to release the knife holding means and cause the spring means to be operative and effect movement of the knife to cutting position.

In a ticket issuer, an electric motor having a shaft including connections for operating a slide member, said issuer comprising a rotary wheel, guide means associated with the wheel to guide a ticket band in engagement with the wheel and to a point of discharge, connections including a pawl and ratchet operable from the slide member to rotate the wheel to advance the band, the guide means terminating at the point of discharge and including stationary shear means, a spring pressed pivoted knife cooperable with said shear means to sever the tickets from said band, a member to hold the knife in inoperative position and means controlled from the motor shaft for causing release of the member to operate the knife in timed relation to the movement of the band.

In a ticket web dispenser comprising a guide along which a ticket web is moved, the combination therewith of a web severing mechanism comprising a frame, a spring pressed knife hinged to the frame on a horizontal axis in operative relation to the web, a lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on said frame and having one end arranged to engage and hold the knife in a raised position, a member mounted on the frame and guided thereon for free up and down movement, said member adjacent its lower end carrying means to engage the under side of the opposite end of said lever, and means comprising a motor driven device operable in timed relation tion therewith of a web severing mechanism comprising a frame, a spring pressed knife hinged to the frame on a horizontal axis inoperative relation to the web, a lever pivotally'mounted intermediate its ends on said frame and having one arranged to engage and hold the knifein a raised position, a member mounted on the frame and guided thereon for free up and down movement, said member adjacent its lower end carrying means to engage the under side of the opposite end of said lever, and a cam device operable in timed relation with the movement of the web to allow the member to lower and cause the lever to swing on its axis to permit the knife to be pressed to web severing position and then to raise said member to swing said lever in an opposite direction to raise the knife and releasably lock it in inoperative position.

In a ticket dispenser, a motor device, a dispenser member connected to the motor to be driven thereby, means operable by the member to move a ticket web to a point of discharge, the combination therewith of a ticket severing mechanism comprising a wall arranged adjacent the web, a spring pressed knife carried on the wall, a pivotally mounted member carried on the wall to hold the knife in inoperative position over the web where it is to be severed, and means driven by power derived from the motor device to engage and cause release of the member to free the knife for its movement to severing position with respect to the web.

In a ticket dispenser, a motor device, a dispenser member connected to the motor to be driven thereby, means operable by the member to move a ticket web to a point of discharge, the combination therewith of a ticket severing mechanism comprising a wall arranged adjacent the web, a spring pressed knife pivotally carried on the wall, a lever carried on the wall for releasably holding the knife in inoperative position over F 8. In a ticket dispenser, a motor device, a dispenser member connected to the motor to be driven thereby, means operable by the member to move a ticket web to a point of discharge, the combination therewith of a ticket severing mechanism comprising a wall arranged adjacent the web, a spring pressed knife pivotally carried on the wall, a lever carried on the wall which at one end engages and releasably holds the knife in an inoperative position over the web at the point where it is to be severed, and means driven by pcwer derived from the motor device to release the lever to cause movement of the knife to sever the web, said power driven means serving also after the knife has severed the band to restore the knife to its inoperative position.
9. In a ticket dispenser, an electric motor having a rotatable shaft, a second shaft disposed at a right angle to the motor shaft and driven therefrom, a slide operable by the turning of the second shaft, dispensing means operable from the slide to advance a ticket web over a support step by step to a point of discharge, the combination therewith of a web severing mechanism comprising a wall adjacent the web, a spring pressed knife pivotally carried on the wall in an operative position relative to the web at the point where it is to be severed, a device on the wall for holding the knife in inoperative position, and means on said second shaft for releasing the device to cause the knife'to. operate, said last mentioned means also serving to restore the knife to its inoperative position.
10. In a ticket dispenser, an electric motor having a rotatable shaft, a second shaft disposed at a right angle to the motor shaft and driven therefrom, a slide operable by the turning of the second shaft, dispensing means operable from the slide to advance a ticket web over a sup port step by step to a point of discharge, the combination therewith of a web severing mechanism comprising a wall adjacent the web, a spring pressed knife pivotally carried on the wall in an operative position relative to the web at the point where it is to be severed, a lever on the wall engaging the knife to hold it in inoperative position, a slide member on the wall also engaged by the lever, and a cam wheel having a ,'step off notch carried on the second shaft'for rotation therewith, said cam wheel engaging the slide member on the wall to cause release of the lever and operation of the knife, and said cam wheel also serving to restore the knife after it has operated to its inoperative position.
