Description

Nov. 2, 1937- J. SCHIERENBECK APPARATUS FOR --'I'HE FINE DISPERSION OF GASES IN LIQUIDS Filed Sept; 25, 1935 INVENTOR Julius Sc/ulerenbeck ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 2, 1937 PATENT OFFICE APPARATUS FOR THE FINE DISPERSION OF GASES IN LIQUIDS Julius Schierenbeck, Heidelberg, Germany, assignor to I. G. Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft, Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany Application September In Germany 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in the fine dispersion of gases in liquids and to apparatus therefor.
, For the fine dispersion of gases in liquids use has hitherto exclusively been made of filter plates or of filters having a cylindrical form or the form of a pot. These filters, however, are of little use for practical purposes because the fine pores of the filter materials readily clog and thereby lead to troublesome interruptions in operation.
I have found that fine dispersions of gases in liquids can be efiected without the use of filter materials thus avoiding the disadvantages inherent in their use. My new result is obtained by bringing a stream of the gas and a stream of the liquid to impinge on to a deflecting plate in such a manner that the gas spreads out in the form of a fine layer perpendicular to the stream of the liquid. The resulting mixture, which contains 1 more or less large bubbles, is then forced under pressure, for example 1.5 to 2 atmospheres, through narrow openings. The openings are preferablyslits, usually having a breadth of from 0.3 mm. to 2 mm. and preferably of from 0.5 mm. 25. to 1.5 mm. Upon pressing the liquid through these openings the large bubbles are reduced to small bubbles. The pressing may be effected through a small number of slit-like openings or through a large number of small circular openings, such as nozzles. Said mixture of gas and liquid is preferably pressed through the narrow openings or slits into a medium which is essentially liquid, in particular the dispersion of gases in liquids formed by the passage of previous" charges of the said mixture of gas and liquid through the narrow openings or slits.
The nature of theinvention will be further described with reference to the accompanying-drawing which shows examples of apparatus according to this invention but the invention is not restricted to the examples shown;
Referring to the drawing, a mixture of gas and liquid is produced by arranging the gas supply pipe I within the liquid supply pipe 2 and screening the mouth thereof by a deflecting plate 3 in such manner that the gas is spread out in the form of a plate in a fine layer perpendicular to the stream of liquid and is therefore readily dispersed by the deflecting liquid. The outlet slits provided for the purpose of breaking up the large bubbles thus formed are provided in the examples shown in Figures 1 and 2 by the plate 4 arranged in front of the'opening of the outer pipes 2 and.
25, 1935, Serial No. 42,009 October 6, 1934 -5 respectively and in the example shown in Figure 3 by the upwardly bent edge of the plate 3. In Figure 2, there is provided a downward deflection by the pipe 5 for the more thorough mixing of the gas and liquid. The nozzle shown in Figure 3 may also be constructed with a funnelshaped widening of the mouth of the pipe 2 and the edge 4 may be dispensed with.
The process according to the present invention may be employed with advantage for example for producing fine dispersions of acetylene in water, the dispersions then being subjected to a catalytic treatment for the preparation of acetaldehyde. But the invention is not restricted to this specific embodiment. Also other gases may be dispersed with advantage in water or in other liquids by the above described process.
What I claim is:-
1. Apparatus for preparing fine dispersions of gases in liquids comprising a pipe for the passage therethrough of a gas, a pipe surrounding said first mentioned pipe for the passage of a liquid therethrough, a deflecting plate screening the mouth of the first mentioned pipe and a deflecting plate screening the mouth of the second mentioned pipe.
- 2. A process for finely dispersing a gas in a liquid which comprises first causing a stream of the gas and a stream of the liquid to impinge on to a deflecting plate in such a manner that the gas is spread out in the form of a fine layer perpendicular to the stream of liquid, then pressing the mixture through narrow slits and then passing the mixture into the liquid.
3. A process for finely dispersing a gas in a liquid which comprises first causing a stream 01 the gas and a stream of part of the liquid to impinge on to a deflecting plate in such a manner that the gas is spread out in the form of a fine layer perpendicular to the stream of liquid, then pressing the mixture through narrow slits and then passing the mixture into the rest of the liquid.
4. A process for finely dispersing -a gas in a liquid which comprises first causing a stream of the gas and a stream of part of the liquid to impinge on to a deflecting plate in such a manner that the gas is spread out in the form of a fine layer perpendicular to the stream .of liquid,- then pressing the mixture of gas and liquid through narrow slits having a breadth of from 0.3 to 2 millimeters.
