L ArroRNEY Patented Nov. 2, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE y PORTABLE roLE STEP Lester Scott Day, Hamden, Conn., assgnor to American Telephone and Telegraph Company, a corporation of New York Application April 24, 1936, Serial N0. 76,289`
1 Claim.
is illustrated. This figure is a perspective view Vof the improved device shown in attached position to a pole. Y
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates a pole showing theV improved portable step applied thereto. This step may be madefrom any suitable material such, for instance, as a malleable iron casting. The step includes a channel portion formed between two downwardly extending side anges 6, 6, which are shown as of substantially triangular shape, and an elongated top surface l which extends outwardly from the channel portion. The flanges maybe secured together by means `of a pin 8 which serves as a re inforcement therefor. Shoulders il,Y 9 are provided on the tops of the vertical edges of theV flanges 6, 6 and projections I0, I are provided at the bottom of said vertical edges. The vertical edges are also provided with angular portions I I, Il which are formed on each lower corner of the flanges 6, 6 and lie beneath the projections Il), I0. The shoulders 9, projections I and portions II, engage and penetrate the pole surface when the step is in position thereon. The top surface 'l of the step lies in a substantially horizontal position when the step is attached to a pole. This top surface may have a corrugated portion which forms a tread, and this tread is suf'ciently wide toy provide a space for the foot. The outer ex-l tremity of the top surface has a slightly upturned portion I2 which tends to prevent the foot from Y slipping off the tread surface.
A slot I3 is vout through the wall of Yone of the anges 6 for the reception of an end ofa poleencircling band of any suitable character. In the present instance this band is shown in the form of a chain I4 which has a terminating link passing through the slot I3 in one ofthe side flanges 6. A lap ringl5 is inserted through the portion of this link which enters the chamber s formed between the side flanges and top surface of the step, and'locks the link-in position. This connection between one of the terminating links'and the lap ring` just described, maybe permanent, that is, thestep may be supplied by the manufacturer in this condition. l
The step isapplied by holding the Ytop of the channel end against the pole 5 so thatrthe step lies in a tilted position and looping the Vchain around said pole. The free end of the chainis inserted over the pin 8,V as shown in the-drawing and drawn taut. A slot I6 is provided'in the iiange 6 opposite the parallel flange to which theV Y fixed end is attached, and when the chain is in this taut position, the linkjof .the chain lying closest to slot I6 is insertedV therein. When the chain is attached, as described, the selected link lies atly upon the slot I6 Witha portion thereof l extending into the chamber between the flanges 6. VThis link lies at right angles to the next succeeding link positioned in the chamber between the anges, and the chain is thus held inV place about the pole. The step is rotated downwardly fromthe tilted position previously described toa horizontal position. This action will serve toY .Y
place added strain upon the chain and cause it to be more tightly drawn about the pole. This will result in securely clamping the channel or pole-engaging portion of the step in position upon the pole.
What is claimed is: Y f A step adapted to be detachably connected to a pole or the like including atread surface and a pole-engaging channel member having`Y slotted side portions, anda chain' comprising associated links disposedl atright angles to each other,.said
V-chainhaving one end permanently fixed to one side portion and looped-about the pole and havingits free end held in adjustable engagement with the other side portion bythe insertion of a link therethrough and held in position bythe Vnext succeeding link.
