MECHANICAL SELF-STOPPING DEVICE FOR PICTURES WITH AN AUTOMATIC RE- STARTER Raymond Blum, Paris, France Application July 20, 1936, Serial No. 91,626
' In France July 25, 1935 3 Claims. (01. alt-1&4)
I This invention relates to a film feeding mechaof the points, but they can be permitted to connisrn for a moving picture machine, characterized time their vertical reciprocating movement.
by the fact that the alternating movement of In order to permit continuous operation of the the claw-coupling, usually driven by a rigid part, cam 5, a spring I is introduced between cam 5 is in this case operated by actuating means so and the upper-portion 8 of the-claw l. Accord 5 constructed that it is possible to stop or supingly if the upper portion of the claw remains press the inward movement of the claw-coupling inunovable, the cam 5 can continue to operate into the film-holes without at the same time the spring I producing'thenecessary compensastopping movement of the various parts of the tion.
16 apparatus. On one of the branches or arms e of the claw 10 The mechanism is so constructed that should I is fixed a blade III which extends downwardly the claw-couplings be driven into the holes by a and is of sumcient length to have its lower end cam blocked for the purposes ofthe stoppage, engaged with an idler H, which, when even the driving cam continues to operate the claws, with blade Ill prevents rotation of the claw-couowing to the adaptability of the mechanism to pling around the axle l2. The film may thus be 15 this movement. ireed'from the claw-coupling by bringing the If the. claw-couplings are fixed to a swingidler ll into position to engage the blade l0. For lever with asimultaneous forward and backward this purpose the idler H is provided with a movement produced by a cam, the blocking of flange I3 which serves as a check for blade Hi, this cam for the purposes of the stoppage neverwhich is yieldably held in its normal position theless permits of the swing-movement, owing by an elastic retainer H but is permitted to to spring which acts upon the lever. revolve around axle l5.
Devices constructed in accordance with this For the purpose of this drive, the disc I invention permit instant stoppage of the projechas a triangular lever arm l6 upon which acts tion. as the only inertia to be surmounted is the a cam ll keyed as shown at H! on to a shaft very slight inward movement oi the claw-coul9. Normally the lever It does not come into plings, which is held up while the other parts contact with cam I], the shaft l9 being at rest remain in movement. In the preferred embodland the disc ll out of position towards the left ment of the invention the apparatus is composed of Fig. 2, so that the idler H is free and permits 1 exclusively of rotating parts to the exclusion of movement of the claw back and forth. on the 30 sliding parts which are liable to jam. shaft I9 is keyed cam 20 having a notch for The invention is illustrated in the accompanyreceiving a latch 2| which is drawn in any desired ing drawing, whereinzmanner. This latch projects and enters the Fig. 1 isairont view showing a stopping device notch of cam 20 which is fixed as is shaft is.

As a consequence, the claw ceases its back The claw coupling 8 which carries the points and forth movement and the "film is no longer 2 is mounted on a frame 3 driven alternately up engaged. Disconnection of cam 26 frees shaft wards and. downwards by a cam t which rotates l9, which through the main shaft 25 operates 45 around an axle or shaft 5. The points i also a blade 25 which, in its turn operates ratchet have horizontal movements, forwardly and rearwheel 21 secured to the shalt by a pin 28. The wardly imparted to them by a cam 5 carried by shaft l9 can now rotate slowly, so as gradually the shaft t, so that during their downward to withdraw cam ll from contactwith the lever movement, the points which engage in marginal It and the disc H is withdrawn by elastic re- 50 perforations of the film will carry the dim with tainer 24 and the idler is again free.
them, disconnection of the. points from the film During this time the cam 20 also will be turned taking place during the upward movement. In and gradually tauten spring 22, and as soon order to stop movement of the picture, all that as cam 253 has a sumcient distance to bring its is necessary is to check the forward movement notch into position opposite the latch, the latch 55 will move into the notch and hold the cam stationary, until the latch is again shifted away from the cam.
Needless to state, the examples of application shown in the drawing are only those of nonlimitative character, the invention permitting of variants and modifications according to the type and model of the apparatus upon which the devices are mounted.
I therefore claim:
1. In a motion picture projecting machine, a film f eding mechanism including a vertically reciprocating frame, a film-feeding clutch ex-' tending vertically in front of said frame and having its lower end pivoted to the frame and its upper portion projecting above the frame and provided with film engaging claws extending away from the frame, a spring arm extending from the upper end of said clutch over the upper end of the frame, a rotary shaft, a cam carried by said shaft and operating in the frame for reciprocating-the frame, a second cam carried by said shaft and engaging the spring arm for rocking the clutch towards and away from a film during vertical reciprocation of the frame and clutch, a blade carried by said clutch and extending downwardly therefrom below said frame, an abutment member movable into and out of position to engage the lower portion of' said blade and control tilting of the clutch, and, means for adjusting the abutment member.
2. In a motion picture projecting machine, film aoemao feeding mechanism including a vertically reciprocating frame, a film-feeding clutch extending vertically in front of said frame and having its lower end pivoted to the frame to mount the clutch for swinging movement relative to the frame into and out of feeding engagement with a film, a spring arm extending from the upper end of saidclutch over said frame, means for reciprocating the frame and acting upon said arm to effect swinging of the clutch during reciprocation of the frame, a blade carried by said clutch at one side thereof and extending vertically below the clutch and downwardly beyond the lower end of the frame, and control means including a member movable into and out of position to engage the lower end portion of said blade and prevent tilting of the clutch into position to have feeding engagement with a film.
3. The structure as claim 2 wherein the control means consists of a driven shaft rotatably mounted transversely of the blade in crossing relation to the lower portion thereof, a disc pivotally mounted for swinging movement about a vertical axis into and out of position to engage the blade and prevent movement of the clutch towards a film, a lever arm extending laterally from said disc at the vertical axis thereof, a cam carried by said driven shaft for engaging said lever arm and swinging the disc about its axis, and means for controlling rotation of the driven shaft.
