Description
DQL. GROVE-R. Harvester Guard-Finger. No. 209,675; Patented Nov. 5; 13m
INVENTOR I @k Wm ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEMAS L. GROVER, OF GROTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVE STER GUARD-FINGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,675, dated November 5, 1878; application filed September 12,1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEMAS L. GROVER, of Groton, in the county of Tompkins, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Reapers and Mowers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to guards for mowers and reapers; and it consists in the construction of a removable leger-plate, which can be taken off, ground, and replaced without removing the guard from the finger-bar, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan. view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the leger-plate.
A represents the guard or finger, having its main portion constructed in the usual manner for the cutters to pass through.
In the guard at a is a recess for the cutterbar, infront of which recess are shouldered arms I) b, and back of the same a projection, cl, to form respectively the front and back bearings of the cutter-bar.
B is the heel of the guard for attachment to thefinger-bar by means of a bolt, d, and nut c.
0 represents the leger-plate, having its forward end cut in V form, with side shoulders M, to fit in and form bearings in the forward end of the guard. The rear portion of the leger-plate is formed with a downwardlycurved shank, D, which fits down into the recess a, and from this shank the plate is extended, forming a heel, F, to the rear end of the guard, and fastened by the same bolt that holds or fastens the guard.
By this construction there are no places where dirt, cut grass, 800., can lodge without being easily removed, and the leger-plate can be taken off, ground, and replaced without removing the guard from the finger-bar.
It will be understood that the recess a in the guard in front of the heel may be made in U shape or any other form desired, according to the shapeof the reciprocating cutter-bar.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the guard or finger A, having a recess, a, of the leger-plate 0, formed with the downwardly-curved shank D, and having its heel F extended to the rear end of the guard, and fastened by a bolt, 01, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this l7th day of August, 1878.
DEMAS L. GROVER.
