RAZOR AND RAZOR BLADE Filed Nov. 27, 1935 Patented Oct. 19, 1937 RAZOR AND RAIZOR. BLADE:

Application November 27, 1935, Serial No. 51,921
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a razor holder and blade therefor, and has for the primary object the provision of means providing an interlocking connection between the holder and the blade to prevent the use of several types or construction of blades in the holder, consequently permitting the sale of the holder with the assurance that use must be with a blade of a certain construction manufactured and sold by the maker of the holder and said means also maintains the blade in proper relation to the holder during the use of the device to permit efficient shaving to be accomplished.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of our invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating a blade constructed in accordance with our invention.
Figure 2 is a plan View illustrating the guard plate of the holder.
Figure 3 is a plan view illustrating a platen or supporting plate cooperating with the guard plate in retaining the blade in position for shavmg.
showing the blade, platen and guard plate assembled to a handle.
Figure 5'is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Figure '7 is a sectional view taken on the line l-l of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a platen having a screw threaded shank 2 adapted to extend through an opening 3 of a guard plate 4 and be threaded into a handle 5. A blade 6 is supported on the platen and against the guard plate with the screw threaded shank extending therethrough. The foregoing description relates to a well known construction found in razors and blades and to prevent the use of blades other than the type shown in Figure 1 with the holder, the platen has formed a plurality of characters each in the form of a raised rib. The characters may be in the form of letters spelling a desired word or name and extending longitudinally through the characters except that one of the end characters is a rib I and spaced from one end of the rib 'l is a rib Figure 4 is an edge elevation, partly in section,
8 including a plurality of angularly related portions, one of said portions terminating at one edge of the platen. The character not joined with the rib I is formed with a rib 9 terminating at an opposite edge of the platen from the rib 8. The ribs 1 and 8 provide a passage through the characters and ribs and the rib 1 being spaced from one of the end characters provides a second passage through the characters and ribs. The guard 4 is formed with grooves Ill matching the characters and. ribs of the platen and the ribs and characters of said platen extend into the grooves II! when the guard plate is assembled to the platen. The blade 6 is formed with slots ll matching the ribs and characters of the platen, and the latter extend through said slots prior to entering the grooves in the guard plate. The slots formed in the blade 6 provide thereto connecting portions I2 between the opposite cutting edges of the blades and these connecting portions are received in the passages formed by the ribs and characters of the platen. The blade when positioned between the guard plate and theplaten with the characters and ribs extending through the slots thereof and entering the grooves of the guard plate retain the blade in proper cutting position relative to the guard plate and the platen. Any other blade not having the slots matching the grooves and ribs and characters of the guard plate and platen will not be accommodated between said platen and guard plate and held againstslippage. Consequently, it will be seen that a holder has been provided'which requires the use of a blade having slots matching the characters and ribs of the platen and the grooves of the guard plate.
End plates [3 are formed at the ends of the platen and cooperate with the guard plate in retaining the blade in position.
Having described the invention, We claim:
1. A razor comprising a handle, a platen adapted to be mounted on said handle and having raised characters extending transversely thereof and spaced inwardly from the opposite edges of the platen, said platen having a rib extending longitudinally thereof through said characters, said platen having a raised configuration in line with said characters and spaced from said characters and said rib to provide a passageway, said platen being provided with a second rib extending at substantially right angles to the first rib and spaced from said characters and said first rib to provide a passageway, a blade having slots therein matching the characters, configuration and the ribs on said platen, said blade also having connecting portions connecting opposite cutting edge portions of the blade, said connecting portions being provided with intermediate parts having a width substantially equal to the width of the passageways and adapted to enter said passageways on the platen for guiding the blade into proper position on the platen when the parts are being assembled, and a guard plate having grooves matching the characters, configuration and the ribs on the'platen. r
2. Arazor comprising a handle, a platen adapted to be mounted on said handle and having raised characters extending transversely thereof and spaced inwardly from the opposite edges of the platen, said platen also having a raised rib 7 extending longitudinally thereof through the characters, said platen being provided with raised ribs disposed between each edge of the platen and the adjacent end of the characters, eachof said second ribs comprising a plurality of angularly related portions one of which terminates at the adjacent edge of the platen, said second ribs being spaced from the adjacent ends of the characters to provide passageways, a blade having slots therein matching the characters and ribs acters and ribs on the platen.
