1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful article vpick-up devices, and althoughmore particularly adapted for picking up eggs from a nest, the device may be used for picking up various other f 5 articles.

VReferring to the drawing, my invention comprises four main parts, a handle A, a fixed upper jaw B, a movable lower jaw'C, and a manually operable means D for the movable jaw.
The handle A is preferably formed of wood and is preferably rectangular in cross section to form a bottom face 5, side faces 6, 6,' and a top face 1.

kr4,() vI I and then positioning the end portions side by side and nally bending the extreme ends of the wire to form downwardlyextending prongs I2, I2. The loop-shaped jaw B projects longitudinally beyond the end of the handle, and the shank 9 is positioned upon the top face 1 of the handle, with the prongsprojeoted into the handle. In order to further secure the fixed jaw B against movement relative to the handle, I have provided y upper andy lower clamping plates I3 and I4 which f are *providedV with upwardly and downwardly extending anges I5 and I6 respectively for engaging the side faces 6, 6 ofthe handle.y A rivet I1 passes through the clamping plates, between the endportions IIJ, I0 of the shank 9, and through the handle A.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the movable The movable lower jaw C is formed from a single length of wire which is bent intermediate its ends to form a resultant elongated loop I8, and a lever I9. The movable jaw C is positioned below and in spaced relation to the fixed jaw B, and normally the jaws are spaced and in parallelism. The lever I9 is formed by the end portions 20, 2U of the wire, and consequently these portions form lever arms. These lever arms are positioned against the side faces 6, 6 of the handle and are formed with upwardly projecting bearing eyes 2|, 2l, which receive a bearing pin 22 extending transversely through the handle and terminates in eyes for retaining the lever arms against displacement. The lever arms extend upwardly at an inclination to a point above the top face 'I of the handle, and their extreme ends are twisted together as at 23 to form a resultant eye 24 which cooperates with said top face 1 to limit the closing movement of the movable jaw C.
The operating means D for the movable jaw C comprises a thrust rod 25 which is slidably mounted on the upper face 1 of the handle between spaced guide eyes 26, 21 secured to the handle. The inner end of the rod is provided with an eye 28 having pivotal connection with the eye 24 of the movable jaw lever I9, and the outer end of the rod is provided with an upstandirig operating eye 29 for engagement by the hand of the operator. A coil spring 3l) is positioned between the eye 29 and the guide eye 21 to yieldably retain the movable lower jaw C in its normal position in spaced parallel relation with the upper jaw B.
In operation, the movable jaw C is opened by the operator pushing the thrust rod 25 forwardly against the tension of the spring 30, and after the egg or other article has been positioned between the jaws, the thrust rod is released and the spring 30 will close the movable jaw and thereby yieldably clamp the egg or other article between the jaws. In order for the operator to release the egg or other article, it is only necessary to open the movable jaw C' by pushing the thrust rod 25.
It is of course to be understood that the details of structure and arrangement of parts may be variously changed and modied without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
In an article pick up, the combination with a handle of rectangular cross section; of a xed jaw secured to one end of the handle and formed of a single length of wire bent intermediate its ends to form an elongated loop projecting beyond the end of the handle, and in longitudinal alinement therewith, the end portions of the wire forming a shank extending longitudinally along the upper face of the handle and having their extreme ends bent downwardly to form anchoring prongs engageable in the handle, a clamping 'plate disposed above the shank and having depending anges engaging the sides of the handle, and a rivet passing through the clamping plate and between the end portions of the wire and through the handle; a movable jaw pivoted on the handle for cooperation with the xed jaw; and manually operable means mounted on the handle for actuating the movable jaw.
