: NITE STATES PATENT o;FFicE"-If 4 Application February 26, 1935, SerialNo. 8,351
I In Great Britain January 12, 1935 2 Claims. 299-1401) .This invention'relates to spraying apparatus the nozzle end. A bush 4 is fixed in this bore by for liquids, of the type in which air and the liqscrewed connection at its rear end., A second uid are fed to a-discharge nozzle. It is sometimes bush 5 is also fitted in alignment in front of the requiredthats-the spray should be substantially first bush and a valve seating 6 is-located be- 5 round,-whilst atiother times it is required to be tween the two bushes. A mushroom head valve fan-shaped; and this invention has" for its 010- 1 coacts with this seating and is formed on the ject 'a'spray ng'apparatus, in which the spray valve stem which is screwed to the cylindrical can be very readily changed over from one conslide block 8. A cup shaped washer 9 is fixed dition to the other and preferably whilst the between this block and a collar on the valve 10 spraying :apparatus ,is in action. stem to form an air seal in the bush 4. The trig- 10 According tothis invention, the flow of air ger 2 has an arm I0 projectingbeyon-d the pivot under pressure is controlled so that it can be axis which coacts with the sliding block, so that fed to the nozzle to either producea. round spray when the trigger is actuated the valve 1 is moved or a'fan-shaped spray. For this purpose a valve axially. The compressed air passes through a 5 controldevice is provided-which controls the flow conduit II in the body of the gun and leads to 5 of. .air through two separate conduits leading to the chamber l2 at the backof the valve seating the-spraying nozzle to produce the round spray 6. The stem I3 of the valve is extended beyond or to produce the fan-shaped spray. Preferably the aforementioned first valve 1 and a second when theairis passing through the conduit to valve I4 is provided thereon. This second valve effect a fan-shaped spray, the conduit leading coacts with a conical seating formed on the in- 20 the air to form the round spray also remains side of a seating ring I5, slidably-mounted in the open.v Thevalve mechanism is conveniently acinner sleeve bushing aforementioned. Two septuated by a single spray control trigger or memarate air branch conduits i6 and: [1 .pass to-the ber, so-that. the; operator can either obtain a nozzle. Perforations are formed in the wall. of round spray or the fan spray by simply operating the bush 5 on the outlet side of the first men- 25 the trigger which starts and stops and variably tioned valve 1 and-these perforations communicontrols the spray. The valve mechanism is concate with a cylindrical recess l8 around the veniently in the form of a double valve operated bush, from which passes the conduit; l6-which by. the trigger, and the arrangement is such that leads to an inner annular chamber 1 9; at the the .timing of the opening of the second valve in front of the frame on which the spraying nozzle 30 relation to the :first valve is adjustable. The is fixed. When the trigger is operated the first double valve conveniently comprises a directly valve 1 is opened and thus allows air to pass to operated valve which opens "the conduit for the nozzle for producing the round spray. The formingthe round spray, and which when opersecond valve l4 lieson the outlet side of the said ated simultaneously moves the second valve. The perforations so that an air chamber 20 is' pro- 35 s in f the second valve h w v rmally vided behind the second valve 14 and its seating. moves simultaneously with the valve sothat the The second valve is simultaneously moved with second valve, controlling the fan spray, is not the first valve, but the airpressure in the chain Opened Until the movement of the Seating s her 20 causes the seating to slide with the valve 40 stopped by a suitable abutment. and consequently the second valve is not opened. 40 7 Referring to the drawing 7 An adjustable stop is provided against which the Figure 1 is a cross sectional elevation of a valve seating l5 moves, thus preventing the'seatspraying gun constructed according to this ining moving with the valve head. The air can vention, and thus pass through the second valve l4 along the 5 Figu e' S OW amodified form of valve mechbush 5 to the axially arranged conduit I! leadanism. ing to an outer annular chamber 22 at the According toa convenient embodiment of the nozzle end of the gun frame, A spiral spring 23 invention, the apparatus comprises the frame I bears against the head of the second valve to of a spraying gun on which is mounted a connormally press the valves I4 and] into the trol trigger 2. The needle valve 3 controlling the closed positions. The adjustable stop conven- 50 liquid coacts with a trigger 2 intermediate its iently comprises arotatable pin 29 having around pivot axis and the outer end or finger grip of abutment head 30, one half of which is cut away. the trigger. The upper portion of the gun frame By rotating this pin, the movement of the slidis bored longitudinally in a direction which inable valve seating 15 is'adjustably limited, so. that clines inwardly from the back end of the gun to the second valve M can be arranged to open at 55 are opened one immediately or almost immediately after the other. At the other end of the adjustment, the round spray can be fed by a more fully opened liquid needle valve 3 with the full 1 air pressure without the fan shaped spray being obtained. The nozzle'end of the gun frame has thus two annular chambers l9 and 22 which are closed by a screwed distributorgsleeve 24 receiving Openings are provided in the front the nozzle. of this sleeve 24 leading to appropriate channels in or around the nozzle and in the air cap to Y give the spray. The adjustable pin aforementioned may be mounted in a bush 25 screwed on the frame i and the outer end of the pin may be fitted with a head 26 which coacts with spring controlled or other stops to facilitate quick adjustment to; obtain any desired condition of spray. f I
According as shown by Figure 2, the secondvalve I4 aforementioned. may be substituted by a ball 21 which beds on the slidable seating sleeve I5a aforementioned. This slidable seating sleeve may coact with an adjustable stop 28 screwed in the frame axially of thesliding seating.
Withthis construction andwith the setting shown by Figure 1, when the trigger 2 is first moved, the valve 'Ia'is opened and air is fed to the nozzleby way of the conduit IGaa A small opening of the valve la allows air to flow at substantially full pressure. The needle valve 3a is also opened, but the arrangement is such that it is opened after the air valve is opened. On
the further movement of the trigger the liquid valve is further opened, thereby giving a variable round spray. On the further movement of the,
trigger the seat [5a moves against the stop 28 and air flows to produce 'a fan-shaped spray. By adjusting the stop 28, the fan spray can be produced at any suitable point of the trigger movement, andthe relationship of the opening of the needle valve can be arranged'to provide for a variable fan spray. 7 K
I claim: 7 Y 7 .1. Apparatus for spraying liquids or other material, comprising a frame, 'a spraying head carried by the frame, at which occurs, alternatively,
