1 Claim. (Cl. 9243) This invention relates to variable flow pulp is possible to instantly change the angle of attreatingmaohines. It is applied customarily in tack between the impeller blades and the liquid practice to apparatus employed in the manufacand thereby alter the amount of liquid displaced ture of paper, the pulp being taken up in web while the machine is in operation. This applica- 5 formation by a screening roll or receptacle in a tion sets forth only one of many methods of ac- 5 vat charged with pulp and water, the web or complishing this variable pitch, and the same efsheet being removed from the roll by a couch roll fect could be attained by other means, and'it in the common process. The object of this inwould likewise be entirely practical to combine ventlon is the provision of efiective fluid moving the variable pitch feature with a variable speed I 10 means that may be varied so as to alter-the motor for driving the pump and which would give 10 amount and velocity of the flow and the -deposit added flexibility or adaptability to the apparatus. upon the screening member in the vat, and the It will be understood that the water which has preferred form of such means comprises a propassed through the wire not covered cylinder in peller wheel located in a suitable conduit termithe vat, is ready o b co d te o t of the vet l5 ti r connection and having adjustable and back at the head box of the machine for di- 15 blades coupled with and operated by attachments lilting the incoming thick p p- In s y the extending to the outside of the conduit and which same Water is used over and over aga d t e may be arranged by hand. The flange I0 of the conduit 55 is attached to the casting I5 forming the passage for fiuent material from the vat l6. Corresponding in position with the passage through the casting i5 is a hollow cylindrical part forming the communication from. the wire covered roll or receptacle l8 with the conduit. The receptacle I8 is carried by the shaft l9 and may have a bearing in a cross member in the casting l5 as shown. The wire covered reticulated roll l8 takes up the pulp in a web in the usual manner, and the web is removed by a couch roll 20. Those parts are variously constructed and arranged in machines for the purpose stated.
As best shown in Fig. 3, the main shaft 6 is hollow, and within thesame is the master gear operating shaft 2 I. In Fig. 2 the master gear 22 on the end of shaft 2| is shown in engagement with the mitre gears 23 and 24. Each mitre gear is attached to the revoluble stem, such as the stem 25 of a propeller blade, the whole being carried by the hollow hub I I on the end of main shaft 6. Again referring to Fig. 3 there will be noted a circular plate 26 secured by a lock nut 21, or in some other-chosen manner, upon the screw shaft H by which the plate 26 may be advanced into the hollow of the shaft 6 or withdrawn. The screw shaft engages the threaded endof a suitable bracket support l4' carried by the standard 2. Between the plate 26 and the nut on the inner end of the screw shaft is a ball or roller bearing 28 carried in the outer end of a hollow movable sleeve ,or block 29 that can be pushed by the op- .eration inwardly or drawn outwardly in the grooved seat 30 formed in the hollow of the main shaft 6. Still considering Fig. 3, it will be observed that the master gear shaft 2| has a projecting cylindrical pin 3| arranged in engagement with a slanting slot 32 in the movable sleeve or block 29.
The arrangement illustratedin Fig. 4 is the same as that of Fig. 1 with the exception of the following modification. The drive shaft 33 is revolved by pulley 34, and has at its internal end the propeller with the adjustable blades 35, and at its external extremity the hand wheel 36 on the screw shaft 31, all the same as before. The conduit 38 is attached in a position corresponding with the hollow cylindrical bearing passage 39 of the strainer 40 carried by vat 4| in revoluble relation. The drive shaft 33 has a terminal 42 having a connection 43 with a like end hub upon the strainer shaft 44. In this construction the strainer 40 is rotated by the drive shaft 33.
The operation is the same in either instance and is "thought to be readily discernible from the drawings and the foregoing explanation. By means of the hand wheel outside of the vat the sliding slotted member may be moved in or out, and the engagement of the cylindrical pin on the master gear shaft with the slanting slot of the sliding member can be caused to turn the master gear shaft in either direction, and by the action of the gearing alter the pitch of the adjustable blades of the impeller or' propeller pump. By the construction and arrangement of the roller bearing at the external end of the main shaft, the screw shaft l4 remains at rest while the main shaft, the master gear shaft and the slotted sliding member rotate together until some desired alteration of the pitch of the impeller blades is required. In this invention as shown and dea shaft adapted to support and revolve the strainer, said strainer and vat having movably communicating conduits through which material may be moved with respect to the interior of the strainer, said conduits being constructed and arranged to permit the revolution of the strainer in the vat, fluid impelling means carried by said shaft comprising a propeller having adjustable blades whereby the flow of material may be varied, said propeller blades revolving with the strainer, means carried by the shaft and connected with the propeller blades for adjusting the blades, and. externally located hand operated devices constructed and arranged to control the blade adjusting means.
