Then n the n web or sheet form is con-f :1 member and is orna-' ing to v mprinting of engravedbr specially prepared plates or rolls 3 but these are extremely expensive and for each differentpattern itis necessary to have a" separate roll or plate. According to this invention 1 4 the body is carried by a rigid member such as a plate rv roll and maybe removed therefrom so that arollmay have'a multiplicity of designappiying surfaces. applied thereto at small ex- As an addedfeaturefI have found that where fabric is used for what may be called the print-' ing or flnishingfaceQthere may be many varied and beautiful effects, and the elements of the 55 fabric; being of fibrousmaterials, readily absorb v the limit-4 ofFig 3. apted for use a-printing member l According to the inventionI provide a Fig. 3 is fragmentary, plan view "of "an imprinting or finishingmemberbf theinventioriy d p p p a Fig.4 is aicross sectional elevationalyiew on Referring now to the drawing'more i the invention will befullydescribed.
which is preferably formed'of some plasticmaterial," such as rubber or a rubberf composition.
This may be vulcanized toanydesireddegree and lretain someg of itsyieldability or resiliency l 'I'hisFbody 2 has on its face an imprinting or finishin -rnember 'indicated generally by I and n y a a p which maytake various forms. f ismagle from someiplastic rubber composition which printing 4 ember 4 may be a.f
'va'rious' materials, "or, of course, "it; may be) a 3 nitted fabric." Various inembers will produce "manyand-various effects according to their char- "acteristicathe form of fabric shown being mere-i 7 1y for illustrative purposes.
z 'rhe imprinting member'lyhas a part' of its elements 6 imbedded more orless in the body 2 and it isvulcanizd to the body 2 so that the y i 3 i l :fimprinting membenand the body form arcomnglto the prior art it has been usual practice in; one way toornament paperby means posite nriember. It will be appreciated that the elements of such a memberasc 4:may be embedded more or less in the body as may be desired so that more or less of the fabric will'appear at or more or less above the surface of body 2.
The body 2 may be secured to aplate such as 9 orto a roll represented by 8 so as tomform a printing fabric as the face thereof with the body 2 backed up by a rigid support. The vulcanizing of the imprinting fabric 4 to the body may j be accomplished in the usual well-known manp- ":colorin material when it desiredtto apply a coloredfldesign to the paper.
Fig. 2 is aside elevational view of a roll em- I detail,
body! 7 more'or less resilient covering having the immaking it possible to have a wide variety patterns.
Thus, it is possible .to ornament paper with various patterns without the necessity of expensive engraved or etched rolls or plates for the ornamenting operation. The body 2 may be secured to its support either the plate or roll by cement or the like.
With the body having the imprintingfabric face on a support such as a plate or roll, the paper is contacted with said fabric under pressure so that the paper receives an impression accordin to the characteristics of the fabric.
Where it is desiredto apply color to the paper, the fabric face or the elements of the fabric are supplied with color and the paper contacted therewith. For instance, where the imprinting membet is used in association with theroll I- have found that the roll such as 8 may be placed in a roll-stack consisting-of an upper roll II), a color roll I! and an intermediate roll l4. The color roll l2 operates so that its periphery at least picks up color in a vat i6 and thisroll I2 delivers the color to the roll H which is in contact'with the ornamenting roll 8 so that the color is applied to the elements constituting the imprinting surface of the said roll 8.
Sheets or webs may be run between the rolls 8 and iii. For instance, a web W of paper which is run from a roll 20 through the rolls 8 and I0 is reeled up as in roll 22.' As the paper in web or-sheet form is contacted with the imprinting member it is ornamented according to the character of said member which of course may be varied within wide limits.
As I have said heretofore, the fabric member for imprinting the paper may be embedded in the body 2 to any desired extent so that it is possible to obtain ornamentation which is ratherbold or which may be relatively faint. In the case of a fabric made from relatively heavy yarn or elements, a faint effect may be produced by embedding the fabric deeply in the body 2. Where a fabric made from relatively small or fine elements is used, these may be laid on the face of the body without any great degree of embedding."
It will be appreciated that it is possible to produce many and various effects since the imprinting member maytake many and various forms and that altogether there is produced in an economical manner an efficient imprinting memtions extend above the plane of said yleldable body 2. An apparatus for ornamenting or finishing paper or the 1ike,'a relatively rigid roll, a body therearound of relatively yieldable material secured thereto, an imprinting member of fabric secured to the surface of said body so as to have portions of theelements of the fabric embedded therein and other portions disposed above the plane of the surface of said yleldable body.
3. An apparatus for ornamenting or finishing paper or the like, a relatively rigid roll, a body of relatively yleldable material secured therearound; an imprinting member of fabric on the face of said body having some of its elements secured thereto whereby the said body serves as a cushion between said roll and imprinting member, and another relatively rigid roll in coacting relation with the first roll'so that a web of paper may pass therebetween to be acted upon by said imprinting member.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a unitary device for working on paper or the like comprising in combination, a body of relatively yieldable vulcanizable material, and a surface on said body formed from a pluralityof elements secured to the body by vulcanization so that certain portions of certain elements extend above the plane of the body. "6. As a new article of manufacture, a unitary device for working on paper or the like comprising in combination, a relatively'rigid roll member, a removable body member of relatively yieldable vulcanizable materialextending around the periphery of said roll, and a design-imparting member formed from a plurality of spaced-apart fabric elements secured to the outside of said body member by vulcanization so that portions of some at least of said elements embedded in the vulcanizable material and other portions of some at least of said elements extending above the plane of the body member.
