The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in a door operating device and more particularly to adevice by which a garage door may be opened or closed from a remote point.
An object of the invention is to provide a door operating device of the above type which is simple in construction and which may be readily installed for operating vertically swinging doors or doors of the overhanging type.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door operating device of the above type which may be locked at the remote point from which the doors are operated to prevent unauthorized use.
The above and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will be hereinafter more fully described. H

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the invention is illustrated as applied to twin garage doors l0, low of the vertically swinging type. The door in is hinged to the door frame H as at l2. Secured to, the door I!) beneath the hinge I2 is a bracket l3 having a dependingshaft portion M which is in alignment with the axis of the hinge I2. The shaft portion l4 extends into a box or housing l5 which is disposed beneaththe garage door and underground. A pulley I6 is fixedly mounted on the shaft portion [4 within the housing I5. 'That portion of the cover for the housing 15 which is not directly under the door frame ll, may be made removable so as to permit access to theinterior of the housing. The pulley i6 is provided with an offset portion I! through whicha bolt l8 extends. The ends of a pair offiexible cables l9, l9a are secured to the point by the bolt I8.
The cables I9, I90, extend out through the side wall of the housing l5 and into conduits in the form of pipe sections 20, 28a respectively which are also located beneath the ground. The pipe sections 20, 20a extend to a remote point in front of the garage doors and approach one another so as to extend into an angle portion 2| of a vertical post 22 in the form of a tubular pipe section which extends above the ground so that, without getting out of a car, the driver may open or close the doors. Threaded to the upper end of the vertical pipe section 22 is a horizontally disposed cylindrical casing 23. The casing 23 is internally threaded at its ends to receive the closure members 24, 25. The closure member 24 is provided with an inwardly extending boss 24a which is recessed to receive the end of a shaft 28 which extends through and is journaled in the other closure member 25. A pin 26 extends through the shaft 28 at a point adjacent the inner end of the circular lock 40. The ends 21, 29 of the pin 26 extend beyond the periphery of the shaft 28 and are adapted to abut against the inner faceof the closure member 25 to limit the endwise movement of the shaft, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The shaft is provided with'spacedv collars 30, 38a, which are provided with an integral ring portion 3|, 3hr through which screws 32, 32a extend. The screws 32, 32a, serve to clamp the ends of the cables I9, I9w respectively to the collars and to the shaft 28. v
Fixedly secured to the closure member 25 is a plate 33 which is provided with an outwardly extending annular rim portion 34. The outer edge of the rim portion 34 is cut awayat intervals to provide teeth 35. Secured to the outer end of the shaft 28 is a crank handle-36. Between the handle 36 and the plate 33, a plate 31 is fixed on the shaft 28. The plate 31 is provided with an annular rim portion 38 which extends toward the rim portion 34 of the plate 33 and which is also provided with teeth 39. The end of the shaft 28 to which the handle 36 is secured, is hollow so that a conventional circular lock 40 may be fitted therein. The lock 48 extends to a point within the closure member 25 and the shaft 28 is provided with openings 4|; Ma, therethrough. The locking lugs 42, 42a. of the lock 48 are operated by a key 43 which may be inserted in the end of the shaft '28.
As shown in Fig. 4, the shaft 28 is locked against rotation. In this position of the shaft, the openings 4|, Ma therethrough are disposed within the closure member 25 so that the locking lugs 42, 42a of the lock 40 can extend therethrough and abut against the inner face of the said closure member. In this locked position of the shaft 28, the teeth 35 and 39 on the plates 33, 31 respectively are interengaged. Since the plate 33 is stationary and since the plate 31 is fixed to the shaft 28, the interengagement of the toothed edges of these plates will prevent the shaft from being rotated. When it is desired to rotate the shaft 28. for opening or closing the garage doors, the key 43 is inserted in the lock 40 and turned so as to withdraw the locking lugs 42, 42a to a point within the shaft 28.

The doors [0, Illa may be connected by any conventional link mechanism which is well known in the art. Mounted on the bottom of the housing I5 is an upstanding resilient plate 44. A screw or pin 45 extends through the edge of the pulley IE toa point slightly below the upper edge of the plate 44. Force applied to the operating handle 36 in rotating the shaft 28 is sufiicient to force the pin 45 over the resilient plate 44. The door l turns through an angle of substantially ninety degrees and the pin 45 and the plate 44 are so positioned relative to one another that the pin 45 will just pass over the plate 44 when the door I!) is opened. In this position thepin 45 is immediately adjacent the plate 44 so as to resist closing of the doors by the force of wind.
As shown in Figs. and 6, the device is shown as applied to a garage door of the overhanging type. The cables I9, l9a extend from the vertical post 22 through a conduit 46 beneath the ground to a point just within the garage door 41. The garage door is made up of hinged sections which carry arms 48. The arms 48 are. provided with rollers 49 which travel in a trackway 50. The pulley I 6a is mounted on a bracket 5| at the top of the garage. The cable 19a extends over the pulley l6a at one side of the garage door 41 and then downwardly to a point where it is seecured to a horizontally disposed arm,52 which has one end thereof secured to a bracket 53 on the lowermost section of the door 41., The opposite end of the arm 52 carries a roller. 54 which travels in the trackway 50. Rotation of the operating shaft 28 will thus operate through the cables 19, 19a to raise or lower the door 41. The shaft for the pulley lfia is horizontally disposed and extends in the same direction as the hinge axes of the sections of the door 41.
It is to be clearly understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a door operating device, the combination of a hinged door section, a tubular control post remotely situated with respect to said door, a. shaft mounted for rotation in said post, means for rotating said shaft, a housing disposed underground beneath said door section, a pulley shaft connected to said door section and extending'into-said housing, a pulley fixedly mounted on said pulley shaft within said housing, tub lar conduits. extending: into Said housing in The shaft 28 may then be moved endwise to separate the toothed spaced relation to one another and approaching one another at the opposite ends thereof and extending into said control post, and flexible cables secured to the shaft in said post and extending through said post and through said tubular conduits and connected to said pulley for opening or closing the door upon rotation of the shaft in said post.

In a door operating device, the combination of a door, a control post remotely situated with respect to said door, a casing carried by said post, a shaft mounted for rotation and limited endwise movement in said casing, means connected to said shaft for opening and closing the door upon rotation of said shaft, stationary locking means on said casing, cooperating locking means mounted on said shaft and rotatable therewith for engaging the locking means on said casing upon endwise movement of the shaft into the casing whereby to prevent rotation of said shaft, and means for locking said shaft against endwise movement when said cooperating looking means are engaged.
3. In a door operating device, the combination of a door, a control post remotely situated with respect to said door, a casing carried by said post, a shaft mounted for rotation and limited endwise movement in said casing, means connected to said shaft for opening and closing the door upon rotation of the said shaft, a toothed member fixedly mounted on said casing, a cooperating toothed member fixedly mounted on said shaft for engaging the toothed member on said casing upon endwise movement of the shaft into the casing whereby to prevent rotation of said shaft, and means for locking said shaft against endwise movement when said members are in engagement.
4. In a door operating device, the combination of a hinged door section, a control post remotely situated with respect to said door section, a shaft mounted for rotation in said post, means for rotating said shaft, a housing disposed underground beneathsaid door section, a pulley shaft connected to said door section and extending into said housing, a pulley fixedly mounted on said pulley shaft within said housing, means connecting the shaft in said post with said pulley for opening or closing the door section upon rotation of the shaft in said post, a resilient plate mounted within said housing, and a pin carried by said pulley and adapted tocontact with said resilient plate and pass thereover when the door is opened, said resilient plate and said pin abutting against one another when the door is open to prevent closing of the same until the shaft in said post is positively operated.
5. In a door operating device, the combination of a door, a control post remotely situated with respect to said door, a casing carried by said control post, a shaft mounted for rotation within said casing and having connected thereto an operating handle, means connected to said shaft for opening or closing the door upon rotation of said shaft, a stationary locking device, a cooperating locking device rotatable with said shaft and, shiftable into engagement with said stationary locking device for preventing rotation of said shaft, and a key lock operable when said locking devices are in engagement for positively preventing an endwise movement of said shiftable cooperating locking device whereby to maintain the said looking devices in engagement with one another to prevent rotation of said shaft.
' 6. In a door. operating device, the combination of a door, a control post remotely situated with respect to said door, a casing carried by said control post, a shaft rotatably mounted within said casing and having connected thereto an operating handle, means connected to said shaft for opening or closing the door upon rotation of said shaft, a locking member fixedly mounted on said casing and having a cylindrical rim portion provided with teeth around the edge thereof, a cooperating locking member having a cylindrical rim portion provided with teeth around the edge thereof, said cooperating locking member being rotatable with said shaft and shiftable into engagement with the other of said locking members, and means carried by said shaft and adapted to extend outwardly therefrom for positively preventing endwise movement of said shiftable cooperating locking member whereby to maintain said locking members in engagement with one another to prevent rotation of said shaft.

In a door operating device, the combination of a hinged door section, a control post remotely situated with respect to said door section, a casing carried by said control post, a shaft mounted for rotation in said casing and having an operating handle connected thereto, a pulley mounted adjacent said door section and having the axis thereof extending in the same direction as the hinge axis of said door section, means connecting said pulley with said door section, means including flexible cables extending from said shaft to said pulley for rotating the said pulley whereby to open or close the door upon rotation of said shaft in said casing, a stationary locking device carried by said casing, a cooperating locking device rotatable with said shaft and shiftable into engagement with said stationary locking device whereby to prevent rotation of the shaft, and a key lock carried by said shaft and having means adapted to extend outwardly therefrom to positively prevent endwise movement of said shiftable cooperating locking device when said locking dey vices are in engagement with one another whereby to prevent rotation of said shaft.
8. In a door operating device, the combination of a hinged door section, a control post remotely situated with respect to said door section, a casing carried by said control post, a shaft mounted for rotation and limited endwise movement in said casing and having an operating handle connected thereto, a pulley mounted adjacent said door section and having the axis thereof extending in the same direction as the hinge axis of said door section, means connecting said pulley with said door section, means including flexible cables extending from said shaft to said pulley for rotating the said pulley whereby to open or close the door upon rotation of said shaft in said casing, a stationary locking device carried by said casing, a cooperating locking device rotatable with said shaft and shiftable therewith into engagement with said stationary locking device whereby to prevent rotation of the shaft, and means carried by said shaft and engageable with a part of said casing when said locking devices are in engagement for locking said shaft against endwise movement whereby to maintain the locking devices in engagement with one another to prevent rotation of the said shaft.
