Claims.

My invention relates to garments and more particularly to coats equipped with a slide fastener of the divisible end type.

The object of the invention is to provide an 5 improved construction permitting easy and quick engagement of 'the parts of the separable end parts of slide fasteners in coat-like garments.

Slide fasteners are used extensively on jackets and other garments ywhich extend down to about the waistline but have not been used to any great extent on longer coats, such as raincoats, long tailed mackinaws, hunting coats and overcoats. In these latter types, itis desirable to have a portion at the lower end unfastened to permit free l5 action of the body. This requires a divisible end connection, if a slide fastener is to be used, and with the usual construction it is extremely diflicult to engage the component parts of the separable end connection. I propose to fasten the side fastener securely to the garment but in such a way that the lower end of at least one of the Stringer tapes can be exed away from the garment so that the wearer can readily engage the parts of the separable end connection.

In the accompanying drawing, I have shown for purposes of illustration, one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice. In the drawing:

Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. A coat of the conventional style is illustrated having a collar l and front body portions I and 4G 8. The coat `has a front opening extending the entire length of the garment, and the sides or front body portions 'I and 8 are adapted to be fastened together in overlapping relation to close the front opening of the coat. For that purpose,

a slide fastener comprising stringers and complementary fastener elements, a slider and a divisible end connection are employed. On one side, preferably the side carrying the socket part of the divisible end connection, the Stringer 9 is secured to the outer face of the garment by a line of stitching I0. This line of stitching extends parallel to and closely adjacent the fastener elements II for substantially the entire length of the stringer. The socket member I2 of the separable end connection is also secured by a fastening device I3. The attachment of the socket side of the fastener in the manner described follows more or less the usual construction.Y

The other Stringer I4 of the slide fastener is placed against the innerface of the front body 5 portion 8 and is secured by a line of stitching I5 extending from the top of the fastener parallel to and closely adjacent the fastener elements I6 down to a point indicated at I'I short of the end of the fastener. The point I'I is preferably one l0 or two inches above the pin part I8 of the divisible end connection. Below that point the strlnger Id is attached to a iiexible corner flap I9 which is secured to the inner face of the garment along a diagonal line `20 at one side of the fastl5 ener. The pin part I8 is firmly secured to the corner flap by any suitable means such as a rivet 2l. The end of the Stringer is thus left unattached from the outer material of the coat-adjacent the bottom end so that the stringer end can flex freely away from the coat. The corner iiap I9 may be a separate piece or in some instances, may form a part of the lining or inner facing 22 of the coat.

In using the device it win be clear that the 25 lower end of the coat can be lifted'upwardly away from the end fastener as indicated in Fig. 4, and the wearer can grasp the end of the tape which is freely flexible relative to the coat. He can thus guide the pin I8 into the socket I2 and operate the slider to fasten the garment together.

While I have shown and described in this application one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purpose of illustration and description and that various other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.

What I claim as my invention is:

l. In a garment of the class described, a. body portion having a full length opening, a sliding fastener of the divisible end type for closing the opening, comprising stringers attached to the garment along the sides of said opening and clarrying component parts of a divisible end connection, at least one of the stringers adjacent its component part being set inwardly from the garment edge and only indirectly attached to the garment on its side of the opening at a substantial distance from the edg of the material bordering the opening so that can flex freely relative to the garment to facilitate engagement of said component parts.

2. A coat-like garment having a full length opening and body portions adapted to overlap,

a slide fastener for holding the body portions together comprising one stringer attached to the iront face o! one body portion and another stringer attached to the inner iace of the opposite body portion, said second stringer being attached throughout its length closely adjacent the fastener elements directly to the garment except adjacent the bottom end, a nap secured to the inner tace of the garment adjacent said bottom end at a point to one side oi.' the stringer, said bottom end'oi.' the stringer being secured to said nap whereby it will ilex relative to the garment.

A coat-like garment having a i'ull length iront opening with front body portions on opposite sides of the opening, a slide fastener for closing the opening comprising stringers attached to said body portions and carrying component parts of a divisible end connection at their bottom ends. said body portions extending below the bottom ends of the stringer, the attaching means for one stringer comprising a line of stitching extending through the stringer and body portion closely adjacent said fastener elements to a point above the divisible end connection, a iiap secured tothe inner face of said -body portion at one side of the stringer end, said iiap having sumcient width to permit its being grasped by the thumb and iinger, the stringer end being secured to said flap whereby it can be iiexed away from the material of the garment.

A coat-like garment' extending below the waistline and having a iull length front opening, a slide fastener having stringers on the opposite sides of said opening i'or fastening the coat 4together, said fastenerV extending from the neck down to about the wastline so that it terminates above the bottom or the garment, said stringers carrying component parts oi a divisible end connection at their bottom ends, one oi.' the stringers being positioned on the inner tace oi the garment material and. spaced from the edge of the opening so that it is concealed by the garment material, and Ameans for securing said stringer in said position closely adjacent the fastener elements throughout the upper portion oi' the stringer. a iiap positioned adjacent the lower end of the stringer and secured to the garment material wholly to one side o! said stringer, said flap having suiiicient width to permit its being grasped by the thumb and iinger, and said stringer being secured to the iree edge of said flap.

5. A coat-like garment extending below the waistline and having a full length front opening, a slide fastener having stringers on the opposite sides of said opening for fastening the coat together, said fastener extending from the neck down to about the waistline so that it terminates above the bottom of the garment, one oi' said stringers carrying a socket member and the other carrying a pin member of a divisible end connection, the stringer carrying the pin member being positioned on the inner face of the garment material and set back from the garment edge, and attached securely thereto, the attaching means throughout the major .portion of the stringer being located closely adjacent the iastener elements but at the lower end being spaced to one side of the fastener stringer to provide a fairly flexible portion at the stringer end wide enough to permit its being grasped by the thumb and nger so that the lower end of the coat may be lifted to expose said pin member.
