UNITED STATES ATENT Farce.
G. D. OOLTON, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20,935, dated July 20, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, G. D. GoLToN, of Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter fully described.
In order that those skilled in the arts may use and manufacture my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
' In the annexed drawings, Figure l is aside elevation. Fig. 2 is a back view with plows removed. Fig. 3 is a bottom view with plows removed.
In the several figures, A and A represent the two wheels of the plow, which are secured to the axle O; and it will be seen that wheel A is smaller than wheel A, the reason of which will be described.
B represents the frame, to which the plows are attached,B being a portion of said frame.
H H are two plows, H being secured to the front portion of the frame, (marked B,) and H being secured to that portion of the frame marked B.
D represents a. back cross-bar of the frame. This bar, it will be perceived, is pivoted or secured by means of a nut and screw at the point at one side of the axle O, and may be adjusted to different positions by removing the screw atp and placing it in the holes (1 q. The frame is secured at the other side of the axle by means of the strap of metal marked a, which passes around the axle. This strap is made sufficiently full to allow of the frame playing up and down, said frame falling of its own weight upon the axle, but is elevated by means of the Windlass G and cord 12:. The windlass G and the seat F are both supported by means of the two uprights r 1', which set in the axle O. The plows being secured to this frame and the frame being adjustable at each side, it is evident that the plows may be made to run perfectly level sidewise, or one side may be raised higher than the other should such at any time be required. That portion of the frame marked B, as will be seen in Fig. 1, extends across the axle and rests upon it when not elevated above it by means of the windlass. Hence plow H is on one side of the axle and plow H is on the other, thus balancing each other.
E represents the tongue of the plow, said tongue being connected to the frame B by means of the bars cc and ea. In Fig. 1 it will be seen that bars 0 c secure the parts at top and bottom. f, 70, g,j, and i are nuts which pass over screws which pass through the two barscc and through the frame and tongue and secure the whole together.
6 is a plate bent down at its side, which covers the joint between the frame and tongue.
d is a screw which passes through top bar, 0, and which presses upon the two parts and throws the tongue up and frame down, thus running the plows deeperin the ground. The side bars, a a, are also secured to the two parts (the frame and tongue) by screwsand nuts. The piece 0 connects at one end the bars a a and works between the screw-nuts g and h, and has a circularform on one side, as seen.
It will be readily perceived that by tightening up the nuts on one side and loosening up those on the other the tongue may be thrown out of line sidewise, and the plows may thus be made to run either to or from the land, as may be desired. 4
The revolving colters I are secured to a shaft, and run in front of the plows and cut the sod, producing very little friction compared with the dragging colter. These 001- ters may be adjusted also to suit the plows by means of a slot in their vertical supports.
Havingthus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Arranging the frame B, secured to the axle O as described, with the strap a, cord m, and Windlass G, the several parts being operated in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth; also this in arrangement with two revolving colters and a double-jointed beam, all being constructed and operated substantially as described.
G. D. COLTON.
