Description

Sept. 14, 1937. M COOK 2,093,308
WRIST SCORING DEVICE Filed May 22, 1935 Patented Sept. 14, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
'I'his invention relates to a scoring device especially adapted for keeping scores of games of horseshoes and quoits and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which may be worn like a wrist watch so that it will be convenient to actuate and refer to and will not interfere with the movements of the player and has means whereby scoring points of different valuations can be registered.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating a scoring device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View showing the gearing mechanism between the registering hands and the operating mediums of my invention.
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a plan view illustrating one of the gears.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view showing a spur gear and a spring dog for the operating shaft of the device.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a casing shaped and constructed similar to a watch casing having formed thereon loop elements 2 to which a wrist strap 3 is secured, whereby the 'casing I may be conveniently applied and Worn on the wrist of a player or other person witnessing the game of horseshoes or quoits. The casing I includes a removable rim for securing to said casing a dial 5 and also having mounted thereto a crystal or transparent panel 6 for protecting the dial as well as hands 'I and 8 which are movable over the dial. Graduations 9 are applied to the dial adjacent the periphery in annular formation for cooperation with the hand I in registering scoring points of a game of a certain valuation. Graduations I0 in the form of a horseshoe are applied to the dial to cooperate with the hand 8 for registering scor.. ing points of a game of a different valuation.
A plate I I is mounted in the casing I and carries a shaft I2 projecting through an opening in the dial 5 and journaled upon the Shaft are inner and outer sleeves I3 and I4. The inner sleeve has the hand 1 secured thereto while the outer sleeve I4 has the hand 8 secured thereto. A gear I5 is secured to the outer sleeve I4 and a gear I6 is secured to the inner sleeve by a frame I'I. The gear I6 is of the internal tooth type. A mounting I8 is carried by the casing I and has slidably and rotatably mounted thereto a shaft I9 carrying at its inner end a pinion 20 and at its outer end a finger piece 2I. A coil spring 22 in the mounting I8 acts on the shaft I9 to position the pinion 20 in mesh with the teeth ofthe gear I6 so that by turning the finger piece 2| the 10 hand 'I may be moved over the scale 9. Pressure applied on the finger piece 2I disengages the pinion 20 and the gear I6 and engages said gear 20 with the gear I5, whereby the hand 8 may be moved over the scale I0 by turning the finger 15 piece 2 I.
A ratchet wheel 26 is secured to the shaft I9 and is engaged by a spring dog 21 to hold said shaft against accidental rotation and will permit manual turning of the shaft I9 with an intermittent rotation or with a clicking action so that a person operating the device by feel and sound can readily determine the movements of the hands I or 8 over their respective dials.
The plate I I carries a post II that rotatably supports thereon a gear 23 that meshes with a pinion 24 secured to a finger piece 25. The gear 23 rotates in rear of a window 26 formed in the dial 5. Applied to a face of the gear 23 is a series of numbers, any one of which may be brought in view through the window 26 by the operation of the finger piece 25 to indicate the number of games played.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A registering device for indicating scores and 35 the like comprising a casing having a dial mounted therein and visible through one face of the casing and having an inner and a peripheral scale to indicate different Valuations and hands movable over said scales, a plate xed in the casing having a central shaft extending through the dial, inner and outer sleeves on the shaft on which the hands are xed, a gear on the outer sleeve arranged beneath the dial, a larger internal ring gear having a frame which is fixed on the inner sleeve at the 45 inner end thereof and a longitudinally movable and rotatable shaft journalled in the casing and having an outer riger piece, a ratchet wheel fixed on the shaft, a spring dog carried by the plate engaging said ratchet wheel, a pinion on the inner end of the shaft engageable with the gear on the outer sleeve or with the ring gear of the inner sleeve, and a spring influencing the shaft to bring such pinion into normal mesh with the internal ring gear. 55
2. A registering device comprising a casing having a dial therein visible through one face thereof, said dial having two indicating scales associated therewith, said scales being arranged on the dial in substantially concentric relation with respect to each other, a separate scale indicator for each of said two scales on the dial, sai-d scale indicators having concentric mounting means one within the other and extending through the dial to the rear thereof, means carried by the casing upon which said mounting means are pivoted, and means for operating said scale indicators including a manually rotatable stem member extending outwardly of the casing for operation, said stem being movable to an outward position or an inner position and having means for normally holding it in its extended position relative to the casing but yieldable to permitv it toV be depressed inwardly whereby either one or the other of saidscale indicators may be selectively operated, and cooperating means between said rotatable stem and the indicator mounting means whereby either scale indicator may be rotated With respect to its scale independently of the other.
3. A registering device comprising a casing having a dial therein visible through one face thereof, said dial having indicating scales associated therewith, a separate scale indicator for each of said scales on the dial, said scale indicators each having a rotatable mounting means extending through the dial to the rear thereof, a pivotal support therefor carried by the casing, and means for separately rotating said scale indicators including a manually rotatable stem extending outward of the casing and axially movable so .as to cooperate with the desired scale indicator mounting, and cooperating means between the inner end of said rotatable stem and the indicator mountings whereby the scale indicator selecte-d may lbe rotated with respect to its scale independently of the other. i
