This invention relates to improvements in devices for closing rectangular bag ends and it is an object of my invention to secure in a simple manner formation of distinct fold lines in the 5 bag ends, so as to considerably facilitate subsequent closing, e. g. by the coiling of the bag end.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for forming distinct fold lines by collapsing the bag end without causing any undesired 1'0 folds, particularly with the view of facilitating subsequent closing of the flattened end by coiling same.

Referring to the drawings, a conveyor I is arranged successively to carry filled bags A in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 3) into a position upon a lifting piston 2 which has for its purpose to Velevate the bags through a funnel-shaped guide 3, narrowed at its top, to the operating position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, whereby the bag is somewhat lessened in cross-section at its upper end. The lifting piston 2 is raised and lowered by an arm 6 pivotally journalled on a pin 4 in the machine frame 5. The arm 6 is actuated by a cam disc l, which is secured to the driving shaft 8. The closing mechanism is iixed to four standards 9 and contains two oppositely disposed triangular aps i0 for tucking in alpair of opposite sides of the bag, and Vflaps II and I2 for folding the two remaining sides of the bag. The pivotal axes of all the ilaps extend at the upper edges of the guide 3. The flaps I0 are lxed to shaft pins I3, journalled in a frame I4, to the outer ends of whichlpins I3 are secured arms I5, whichare each pivotally connected to a link rod I6. 'I'he -5 arms I9 is provided with a rearwardly'directed link rods vI6 are pivotally connected to a yoke 4positions shownin Figs. 4 and 5,"whereafter the arm 2|, to which is pivotally connected a rod 22,
the length of which can be adjusted. The rod 22 is given an up and down motion by means of a cam disc 23 secured to a rotatably journalled shaft 24. 5
The up and down movement of the yoke I'I is transmitted also to the aps II and I2. The
latter are xed to pins 25, to which, in addition,
are secured arms 26, which are each connected pivotally to a link rod 21 and 28. The link rod 1.0.
21, which transmits the movements of the flap II, is connected pivotally at its upper end to one of the two arms 29, `which project laterally from the yoke I'I. The link rod '28, which transmits the movements of the yoke I'I to the ap I2, is provided at its-upper end with an oblong hole or slot 30, embracing the other arm 29, Vand the one of the arms 26, that is connected to the lid I2, is turned downwards by a spring 3 I, connected to the machine frame 5, so that the arm 29 rests 20 against the upper edge of the hole 30. The shaft 8 drives the shaft 24 by means of a gearing33, 34 whereby the spindles I8 are moved up and down in a timed relation tothe movements of thefpiston 2 in such manner that the 25 flaps I0, Ii and I2 are maintained in 'the raised position while the piston moves upwardly, thereafter,when the piston is in its uppermost position, folded together and raised again, whereafter the .ill

The operation of the device is the following: The upward movement of the lifting piston 2 is adjusted so that it is arrested when the fillingV theyVV are folded down and tuck in two `opposite o.

The flap lI2 immediately follows the flaps I0 and folds in a third side onto the flaps I0, and the flap II follows somewhat after the nap l2 and folds in the fourth side 45 of Ythe bag simultaneously collapsing and folding down the bag end onto the opposite folding flap I2, as shown in Fig. 7. During this nal folding step the ilap I2 iskept in a downfolded position by spring'force, for one arm 29 moves freelydownwards in the Vslot* 30 in the link-rod 28. -After thus having finished the folding the aps-I, II and I2 are again s'wungup into the piston Y2 is moved down, so that the bag 'rests` on the conveyor I, which transports it further in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 3), conveniently beneath a guide plate which folds the bag end again, which on the downward movement out of the guide 3 has been erected. Thereafter the bag is conveniently advanced to a coiling device which rolls up the flattened and downfolded bag end on forming a transverse fold the position of which is determined by the sharp fold which is obtained on folding down the bag end over the front edge 32 of the flap I2. The direction of the coiling should be the reverse of the preceding folding down of the bag end.
What I claim is:
1. In a device for closing rectangular bag ends, two pivotally journalled, substantially flat and oppositely disposed members for 'tucking in the ends of two opposite walls of a bag, twopivotally journalled, substantially flat and oppositely disposed members for folding the ends of the two remainin'gfbag walls, driving means :for folding down said tucking members towards each other in advance .of said folding members and `folding down saidv folding members vtowards each other upon said tucking members, an elevator member, anda mechanism `operatively connected to said driving means 'to move said elevator member to introduce the bag end between said tucking and folding membersV immediately before they are folded down.

In a device for closing rectangular bag ends, two pivotally journalled, oppositely disposed triangular flaps for tucking in the ends of two opposite walls of a bag, a third flap that is pivotally journalled about an axis to fold the end of a third bag wall and has a front edge parallel with its turning axis, a fourth flap that is pivotally disposed opposite to said folding flap and journalled about an axis parallel with the turning axis of the opposite folding flap'to fold down the end of the bag wall about said front edge, driving means for folding down said tucking flaps towards each other in advance of said folding flaps and folding down said third flap upon said tucking flaps and said fourth flap upon said third 'ap, a member for supporting said bag, and a mechanism operatively connected to said driving means to move 'said tucking and folding flaps and said supporting member relaparallel with its turning axis, a second folding member that is pivotally journalled to fold down the end of the bag end about said frontedge, driving means for folding down said tucking members towards each other in advance of said folding members and folding down said folding members towards each other upon said tucking mem'- bers, a member for supporting said bag, and a mechanism operatively connected to said driving` means to move said tucking, folding and supporting members relative to each other to em- Y brace the bag end with Ysaid tucking and folding members immediately before they are folded down, the distance between the front edge and pivot of said blade shaped folding member being substantially one half of the' distance between'A the turning axes of said folding members.
15. In a device for closing rectangular bag ends, two pivotally journalled, oppositely disposed members for tucking in the ends of two `opposite walls of a bag, two pivotally journalled,
oppositely disposed members for folding the ends of the two remaining bag walls, driving means for folding down said tucking members towards each other in advance of said'folding members and folding down said folding members towards;
each-other upon said tucking members, a member for supporting said bag, and a mechanism operatively connected to said driving means to move said tucking, folding and supporting memf bers relative toV each other to embrace the bag end with said tucking and folding members immediately before they are folded down, the distance from the free ends of said tuckingV members to their pivots being substantially one'half of the width of the bag walls to be tucked in by them.
