KNIFE-CLEANER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,929, dated July 20, 1858.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, JACOB J. BANTA, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Knife-Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein Figure l, is a side elevation of my said knife cleaner, and Fig. 2, is a cross section of the same, as in use.

Similar marks of reference indicate the same parts.

Various devices, such as .rotary buffers and brushes have heretofore been made for cleaning knives, but the same were expensive, and the knives were often broken at the handles.

My said invention consists in the use of a spring hopper containing brick dust or other cleaning material and forming one side of a cleaning cushion, faced with leather or other equivalent materiaLand forced against the stationary side of the cushion by suitable springs so that a knife inserted between said cushion and drawn back and forth is cleaned on said cushion by the brick dust or other cleaning material supplied from the hopper.

In the drawing a is a bed plate secured to a table or other place by screws at 1, l, and

on the flat part of this bed plate the leather cushion ZJ, is attached by suitable cement, the said leather being also retained in place by ribs 2, 2, cast on the bed.

e, is the hopper for receiving the cleaning material. This is on a plate d, to the under side of which the leather c, is cemented, and also retained by ribs 3, 3. This leather forms the upper part of the cleaning cushion, and has a` hole through it corresponding with the mouth of the hopper e, so as to supply cleaning material between the cushions Z), c, to act on the knife when rubbed endwise through between the cushions.

7L, 7L., are helical springs resisted adjustably by the nuts g, g, so as to press the plate CZ, and cushion 0 toward the cushion Z).

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the cushions Z) and c, and hopper e, with the spring z, 71., the whole acting substantially as and for the purposes specified.
