This invention relates to improvements in machines for slitting the paper web as it is being Wound or cut to size and as to the regulation of this machine by remote control.
This invention is a division of my application Serial Number 733,777 filed July 5, 1934, for Paper machine slitter knives.
In carrying out my invention, I propose to avoid the danger to the operator in threading and to reduce the operating costs by the adjustment of the slitter knives to operative or inoperative position by electrical means under remote control. One or more knives may be adjusted simultaneously, individually or in predetermined groups.
One of the objects of my invention is to reduce the time required to thread the Various elements of the machine.
Another object is to reduce the hazard of accidents.
Still another object of the invention is to increase the length of life of the slitter knives.
A still further object of the invention is to vary the width of the slit material by throwing either in or out of operation the desired slitter knives.
Other objects will appear more fully hereinafter.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a slitter and controlling mechanism using a solenoid and plunger.
Figure 2 is a. sectional View of a slitter and controlling mechanism using an electric motor.
I propose to utilize a slitter of the shear cutting type. The device consists of a mechanism which actuates the movable slitter shaft l in a longitudinal direction either directly or through levers or other mechanical means. For instance, the slitter shaft I may be moved by a solenoid 2 and plunger 3 or by a motor 6, gear 5 and rack 6. The solenoid 2 is operated by passing an electric current (D. C.) through the coil which sets up an electric field forcing the plunger 3 outwards. To return the cutter l to operating position the current is cut off and the spring 8 between bracket 9 and collar It! causes the mechanism to be returned to the original position. In the modifled form of electrical control, the small electric motor 4 when the switch is thrown it rotates gear 5 in such a manner that the rack 6 moves outwards rocking rocker arm 4' to move cutter I. On reversing motor 4, the mechanism will be brought back by reversing the process and as the reduction of pressure on the upper end of rocker arm 4 takes place spring 8 assists in the returning of cutter l to position. Solenoid 2 and plunger 3 may be connected directly to slitter shaft I or may act directly through the bracket 9 ontothe inner housing of the slitter bearing I2.

As described in application Serial Number 733,777, the one remote control may govern all the slitter knives and place them in threading or operating position, or control each individual knife or group of knives.
It should be noted that the pressure of the slitter knives is controlled by spring 8, and the adjustment of spring 8 through the adjustment of spring housing in cooperation with bracket 9 determines the predetermined pressure. Furthermore, this pressure is not altered by reason of the change from operative to inoperative position and back again so that considerable time is saved as the slitter knives are ready for operation as soon as the threading is completed and the knives are electrically returned to position through remote control. Furthermore, the manual spreading by driving in a wedge between the I for adjusting the slitter knives at a fixed predetermined pressure, electrically operated means for shifting said knives laterally by remote control and releasing said electrically operated means and returning said slitter knives to operating position by the said means for adjusting the said slitter knives at a fixed predetermined pressure.
