While it is old in this art to provide a reciprocatory paper carrier mounted in the rear of a typewriter and actuated to and fro by the movement of the typewriter carriage, in the present instance the paper carrier is provided with propelling means independently of the typewriter by which the carrier is auto matically advanced in unison with the movement of the typewriter carriage which acts as a governor restraining and controlling such advance movement.
The
paper carrier being automatically returned under motive influence carries with it the typewriter carriage preparatory to the. next line writing operation.
Such motor actuated return moved writing machine carriage maybe effected by operation of the line spacing device of the writing machine or by operation of a special key or lever and may be automatically arrested when the carrier and type writer carriage have been returned to a predetermined position;
The object of the invention is to improve the construction as well as the means and mode of operation of paper supply carriers for a writing machine, whereby they will ened in construction but will be m not only be cheapore eflicient in use, automatic in action, uniform in operation and unlikely to get out of rep air.
A further object of the invention is to provide a paper supply carrier for a writing machine which is propelled independently of but in unison with the traveling carriage of the writing machine and which will not subj due stress or strain.
A further object of the inv actuating means for a paper ect the latter to unention is to provide supp'ly carrier for a writing machine adapted to impart thereto alternating motion, first in one in the other.
A further object of the inv direction and then ention is to provide means for automatically returning the writing machine carriage in unison with the return of the paper supply carrier.
A further object of the invention is to provide an 7 automatically traveling carrier for a paper supply having propelling means other than the writing machine with which it is employed. The movement of the carrier un der its own motive power in one direction is controlled by the operation of the writing machine, and upon actuation thereof in reverse direction it transmits return motion to the writing machine carriage.
A further object of the invention is to provide 5 a unitary motor actuated paper supply carrier applicable to different writing machines.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for automatically effecting the return of the paper supply carrier by the operation of the 10 line spacing device of the writing machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved actuator for the paper supply carrier, and means whereby the actuator is intermittently connected with and disconnected from the carrier.
A further object of improved control means paper carrier.
With the above primary and other incidental objects in view, as will more fully appear in the specification, the invention consists of the features of construction, the parts and combinations thereof, and the mode of operation, or their equivalents, as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred but obviously not nec'essarilythe only forms of embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a conventional form of typewriter and traveling supply carrier to which the present invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the paper supply carrier detached from the writing machine. Fig. 3 is an enlarged end view of the base portion of the paper supply carrier illustrating its mounting and the application thereto of an actuating motor. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the actuator for advancing the. paper carrier in unison with the movable writing machine carriage. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the driving connection for returning the paper carrier and disconnecting the actuator at the limit of its return movement. Fig. 6 is an end elevation, partly in section, of the construction illustrated in Fig. 5. Referring to the drawings, I is a conventional form of writing machine or typewriter having a traveling carriage 2 in which may be mounted the usual platen roll and provided with the usual line spacing mechanism including the operating lever 3 for advancing the platen roll through a step by step movement at the completion of succeeding lines of writing. The invention is likewise applicable to writing machines of the billing machine type wherein the traveling carriage moves the type relative to a stationary platen. It is to be understood that the invention does not depend upon the particular type or style of writing machine and that the typewriter disclosed in the drawings is employed merely for illustrative pur-" poses.
Mounted in the rear of the writing machine for to and fro travel in unison with the typewriter platen carriage is a paper supply carrier mounted in. rearwardly inclined position upon a guide track 6 supported upon standards I arising from a base 8. The carrier 5 is provided with antifriction bearingsS between its base and the guide track 6. It is further provided with adjustable arms Ill extending on opposite sides of the reciprocatory carriage 2 of the typewriter, whereby the carrier and can'iage are operatively interconmits free vertical movement of a platen carriage as is ordinarily necessary with such carriage for writing capital letters and symbols when used but maintains the relative relation of the' carriage and paper carrier during their to and fro travel.
Mounted upon a suitable dependent bracket I2 secured to the supporting track 6, as is illustrated more particularly in Fig. 3, ,is a spring propeller comprising a gear pinion' I3 actuated by a convolute spring I4 and having operative driving engagement with a gear rack I5 carried upon the reciprocatory paper supply carrier 5. The propeller pinion I3 is loosely j'ournaledupon a supporting stud I6 fixedly secured to the bracket I2 and slotted at I! to receive one end of the convolute actuating spring l4, the opposite end of which is secured to the propeller pinion. The spring I4 is enclosed within a housing comprising a cap portion I8 having telescopic engagement with a circular flange or enclosure I9 upon the propeller pinion and surrounding the actuating spring I4.
The actuating spring I4 is tensioned or wound I by the retractive movement of the paper supply carrier which, operating through the gear rack and pinion, imposes upon the spring sufllcient tension to drive the paper supplycarrier through its range of movement in unison with the travel of the writing machine carriage. The spring actuator means, however, propels the paper carrier independently of the driving or power influence of the writing machine. The writing machine carriage operates as a governor to control the advance movement of the paper carrier under influence of the spring actuator limiting it to a step by step movement determined in the usual manner by the operation of the writing machine Such connection per- Figs. 1 and 2.

In order to automatically return the traveling paper carriage after each line writing operation, there is provided an electric motor 20 mounted for oscillatory motion in a supporting bracket or standard 2I and operating through a suitable speed reduction mechanism preferably, though not necessarily, of the worm gear type to drive an actuating pinion 22-having operative engagement with a second gear rack 23 also carried upon the base portion of the reciprocatory paper carrier 5. The driving pinion 22 is intermittently moved into and out of driving engagement with the rack 23 by the oscillatory adjustment of the actuating motor 20. Such adjustment of the actuating motor together with the closing of the energizing circuit is, as here shown but not necessarily, effected by the operation of the line spacingmechanism controlled by the lever 3.
In the present disclosure there has been shown, merely for illustrative purposes, a conventional type of line'spacing mechanism wherein the operating, lever 3 mounted upon the traveling car.
riage 2 is provided with a rock arm 25 connected by a link 26 with a rocker member or bell crank lever 21 connected by a reciprocatory link 28 with an actuating pawl 29 engaging the usual ratchet wheel upon the writing machine platen roll. Such construction has been illustrated in In the present construction the rocker member 27 is-slidable to and fro upon a splined rock shaft 30 mounted in the frame of the writing machine. Thus the rocker member 21 which, in the ordinary writing machine construction is pivoted directly to the traveling carriage, in the present instance travels to and fro upon the rock shaft 30 as the platen carriage is reciprocated and is operated to rock such splined rock shaft 30 simultaneously with the actuation of the spacing mechanism. That is to say whenever the line spacing lever 3 is manipulated to advance the platen roll, the rocking motion is transmitted to the shaft 30 through the rock arm 25, link 2G and rocker member 21, whatever the lineal position of the traveling carriage may be. Secured upon the splined rock shaft 30 is a rock arm 3| connected by a link 32 with a motor control lever 34 pivoted at 33 to the frame of the writing machine. The rear end of this motor control lever 34 is connected by a loosepivotal or slotted connection 35 with an arm 36 upon the oscillatory motor 20. The oscillation of the motor control lever 34, under influence of the line spacing mechanism to which motion is transmitted through the link 32, turns the actuating motor 20, in its mounting 2|, to engage'the driving pinion 22 thereof with the gear rack 23 upon the base of the traveling paper carrier. At the \same time the forward end of the motor control the paper carrier in such position as to engage the hub 39 of the actuaing pinion 22 is a cam 40 which, as the paper carrier reaches the limit of its return movement, operates to depress the gear pinion 22 out of driving engagement with the rack 23 by turning the motor 20 about its pivotal connection with its mounting 2| thus arresting the return movement of the paper carrier. This camming action of the cam 40 upon the hub 39 of the gear pinion 22 at the same time operates through the arm 35 to return the motor control lever 34 to its normal position thereby permitting the switch 31 to open, deenergizing the motor circuit. For economy of manufacture and simplicity of adjustment, the disengaging cam 40 is carried upon a slotted slide block 4| which straddles the gear rack 23 and is adjustably secured thereon by a set screw 42. By adjustment of the cam 40, the range of travel of the paper carrier may be varied.
In Fig. 7 there is shown the line spacing lever of a popular type of writing machine with which is associated an electric switch 43 directly engaged by the line spacing lever and operating to close the motor circuit.
In the construction heretofore described, there are employed two actuators or propellers, one of which comprises the spring actuated driving gear I3 propelling the paper carrier in one direction and the other comprising the motor actuated gear pinion 22 propelling the paper carrier in reverse direction. The retracting motor has sufiicient power to overcome and rewind the actuating spring l4 of the primary propelling pinion l3, whereby the latter is retensioned at each retractive operation preparatory to the next line writing operation. Not only does the motor 20 possess sufficient power to overcome and rewind the primary actuating spring, but it also serves to automatically return in unison with the paper carriage the traveling writing machine carriage with which the paper supply carrier is operatively connected for unison travel. while the writing machine carriage controls the paper carrier during its operative movement in one direction, the paper carrier in turn propels the carriage during its retractive movement.
Although the actuator for retracting the traveling paper carrier is preferably controlled by the operation of the normal line spacing mechanism of the writing machine as has been heretofore described, it may, if desired, be controlled by a special key and to this end the forward extremity of the motor control lever 34 has been provided with a head 3411 by which the lever may be manually depressed to tilt the motor 20 to effect operative engagement of the actuating pinion 22 and gear rack 23 and at the same time close the motor circuit switch 31.
In lieu of the gear drive mechanism for transmitting motion to the reciprocatory paper carrier, the latter may be provided with a friction bar 44, as illustrated in Fig. 11, with which engages a friction wheel 45 in lieu of the gear pinion 22. The traction bar 44 has been shown provided with a V shaped groove and the periphery of the frictiondriving wheel 45 is similarly shaped to afford the necessary driving engagement.
While the construction as heretofore described includes separate actuators for propelling the paper carrier in alternate direction, there is shown in Figs. 8 and 9am alternative construction wherein the same propeller pinion is employed for alternate drivingoperation. In such construction the primary driving pinion I3, having operative engagement with the gear rack l2 upon the carrier, is mounted upon a rotary shaft 45 mounted in suitable bearings 41 on the under side of the supporting track upon which the paper carrier travels. The propeller pinion I3 is provided with within the housing [8 as before described, and operates in the same manner as heretofore described to impel the paper carrier during the normal writing operation. ,The pinion shaft 46 carries a clutch member clutch element ,49 carried by a motor driven shaft 50 actuated from the electric motor 20 through a suitable safety friction drive coupling 5|. This friction drive coupling 5| comprises alternating friction discs which serve to transmit motion from the actuating motor to the shaft 50 and are adapted to slip in the event of undue resistance to rotation of the shaft. The tension of such friction coupling device may be varied by adjustment of the nut 52 upon the extremity of the shaft 50 by which the tension of the spring 53 may be varied, thereby varying the pressure of the discs comprising the coupling element. Such friction coupling device is old in this art and forms no part, per se, of the present invention and is included merely as a safety feature. Any suitable means may be employed for shifting the clutch member 48 into and out of engagement with the coacting member 49. Such shifting movement may be effected by the operation of the line spacing mechanism as before described, or by operation of a special key. However as an alternative construction there is illustrative in Fig. 8 an electromagnetic means comprising a solenoid 54, the reciprocatory core 55 of which is connected with a shift lever 55 engaging the clutch member 48 to shift the same upon the shaft 44 into and out of driving engagement with the clutch element 49. The solenoid 54 may be controlled by the switch 34, illustrated in Fig. 1, orby the switch as shown in Fig. '7 wherein the electric switch'controlled by the spacing lever is shown diagrammatically connected with the actuating motor 20 and with the clutch operating solenoid 54. So long as the clutch elements 48 and 49 are disconnected the propeller pinion I3 is operated under the influence of a. spring to actuate the paper carrier in one direction. However, by interconnecting the clutch elements 48 and 49 either by mechanical means or by the electrically operated mechanism,
shown in Fig. 8, the propeller pinion l3 will be driven in reverse direction and against the tension of its normal actuating spring within the spring housing to retract the paper carrier and, at the same time, rewind the primary actuating spring. Obviously the traveling typewriter carriage 2 of the writing machine will be retracted in unison with the retraction of the paper carrier with which it is operatively connected by the spaced arms.
In Fig. there is shown a further modification wherein the clutch members are actuated by direct electrical influence. In this construction one clutch element 49' is fixedly connected upon the shaft 44 while the movable clutch element 48' is slidingly adjustable thereon and is operatively 'connected with a head or collar 51 upon the shaft 50 by means of studs or pins 58. The movable clutch element 48 comprises the reciprocatory core of a solenoid or electromagnetic vcoil 53. Whenever such solenoid coil is energized by the closing of the electric switch 31. the movable clutch element 48' is retracted 48 engageable with a against the tension of the interposed spring 60 into driving engagement with the clutch element 49' secured upon the shaft 44 whereupon a direct driving engagement is established from the actuating motor 20 to the propeller pinion l3 which is thereby driven in reverse direction to rewind its'actuating spring and to retract the paper carrier and with it the writing machine carriage. The spring 60, shown in Figs. 9 and 10, is interposed between the respective clutch elements 48 and 49 to insure disengagement of these clutch elements upon deenergization of the controlling electrical circuit.
While as heretofore described the electric motor may be interengaged with the carrier for retractive movement thereof by either the actuation of the line spacing lever or by direct manual actuation of the motor control lever 34 which is provided with the head 34:: for this purpose, in which case the line spacing occurs at the beginning of the retractive movement, for certain conditions of use it may be quite desirable to eifectautomatic line spacing operation as the carrier reaches the limit of its return movement. This may be accomplished by the very simple expedient of reversing the position of the rock arm 3| upon the shaft 30 whereby the arm will rock upward coincident with the rocking motion of the shaft incident to the line spacing operation instead of downwardly as shown in Fig. 12. In such event the link 32 connected at its upper end to the arm 3| will be connected at its lower end to the lever 34 by the pivotal'screw 32a, Fig. 1. i In such arrangement, the motor is engaged with the carrier by manual depression of the control lever 34, the head 34a versed rock arm 3|.

Upon such movement of the lever the line spacing mechanism including the rock shaft 30, the rocker 21, link 23 and pawl 29 with the normal line spacing lever 3 will be operated idly in a reverse direction by the transposed link 32 and re- As the carrier reaches the limits of its return movement the cam 40 by its engagement with the hub 39 of the actuator gear rocks the motor out of engaging relation with the carrier thereby returning the control lever 34 and transmitting through the link-32 and reversed rock arm 3i actuating motion to the line spacing devices. Thus the line spacing is automatically accomplished at the completion of the motor actuated retraction of the paper carrier and traveling typewriter carriage.
The stationary mounting of the traveling paper carrier is provided with means for attaching it to a writing machine frame or to a desk in fixed relation therewith, while the triaveling carriage of such carrier is provided with means for coupling it to the traveling typewriter carriage for unison to and fro. motion. Such unitary construction including the mounting, the motor, reciprocatory carriage and motor control means, and the coupling means connecting the traveling carrier, either with or without the paper holder or, compartment may be utilized as an attachable power unit for various mechanisms other than writing machines wherein a reciprocatory member is to be alternated to and fro, and maybe used to electrically return the carriage of an ordinary typewriter, even though not used to carry the paper supply therefor.
From the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a deviceof the character described possessing the particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable, but which obviously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportions, detail construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.
While in order to comply with the statute the invention has been described in language more or less specific as to structural features, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific features shown, but that the means and construction herein disclosed comprise the preferred form of several modes of putting the invention into effect, and the invention is therefore claimed in any of its forms or modiflcations within the legitimate and valid scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 1. The combination with a writing machine including a reciprocatory carriage and a traveling paper supply carrier interconnected with the carriage for to and fro motion, of motor actuating means for the traveling paper supply carrier, the movement of the carrier in one direction under influence of the motor actuating means being controlled by the movement of the carriage, and the motor actuated movement of the paper carrier in the opposite direction being transmitted to the carriage which is automatically returned thereby.
2. The combination with a writing machine including a reciprocatory carriage and a traveling paper supply carrier interconnected with the writing machine carriage spring driven in one direction for unison to and fro motion, of motor actuating means for the traveling paper supply carrier actuating the carrier in opposition to the spring driven carriage, the movement of the traveling carrier in one direction being restrained by the writing machine carriage to a unison rate of travel therewith.
3. The combination with a writing machine having a spring driven traveling carriage of a paper supply carrier interconnected with the printingmachinecarriage forunison to and fro motion, of an electric motor actuating means for the traveling paper supply carrier in opposition to the influence of the spring driven carriage and independently of the writing machine, the movement of the traveling paper carrier in one direction under motor actuating influence being controlled by the operation of the writing machine.
4. The combination with a writing machine including a reciprocatory carriage normally spring driven in one direction and a traveling paper supply carrier interconnected with the carriage for unison to and fromotion, of motor actuating means for the traveling paper supply carrier in opposition to the'influence of the spring driven carriage, the return movement of the traveling paper carrier in one direction under motor actuating influence being transmitted to the carriage whereby the carriage is retracted by the travel of the carrier.
5. The combination with a writing machine including a reciprocatory carriage and a reciprocatory paper supply carrier mounted independent of the machine for unison travel therewith, a pair of motive devices pertaining to the paper supply carrier for driving the paper supply carrier first in one direction and then in the other, one of said motive devices being opposed by the other device the latter devic'ebeing intermittently engageable with the carrier and means for eflecting such engagement at will of the operator.
6. The combination with a writing machine including a reciprocatory carriage and a reciprocatory paper supply carrier mounted independently of the writing machine for unison travel, motive means for advancing the carria-ge and paper supply carrier in one direction and motor actuating means intermittently engageable with the reciprocatory paper supply carrier independently of the writing machine carriage for returning the carriage and paper carrier in unison preparatory to succeeding line writing operations.
7. The combination with a traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine, of motor actuating means therefor for directly driving the carrier first in one direction and then in the other independently of any actuating influence of any corresponding movement of parts of the writing machine.
8. The combination with a writing machine including line spacing means and a traveling paper supply carrier for the writing machine, auxiliary spring means for advancing the carrier in unison with the carriage of motor actuating means intermittently engageable with the carrier independently of the writing machine carriage and controlled by the operation of the line spacing means.
9. The combination with a writing machine including line spacing means and a travelin paper supply carrier for the writing machine, auxiliary spring means for advancing the carrier in unison with the carriage of motor actuating means associated with the carrier having intermittent operative engagement with the paper supply carrier independently of the writing machine carriage under control of the line spacing means to return the carrier after each line writing operation upon actuation of the line spacing mechanism. v,
10. The combination with a writing machine operable through a step by step movement and a traveling paper supply carrier therefor, of motor actuating meansfor the carrier governed by the step by step movement of the writing machine, and means including an electric motor intermittently engageable with the paper supply carrier independently of the writing machine for effecting the automatic return movement of the'writing machine and .paper carrier in opposition to said first mentioned motor actuating means.
11. The combination with a traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine, of an actuating motor therefor mounted for tilting motion into and out of operative driving relation with the carrier, means for tilting the motor into op-,
erative engagement in response to certain operations of the writing machine, and means for automatically disconnecting the motor by the motor propelled movement of the carrier.
12. A traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine, an oscillatory propeller therefor movable into and out of actuating position by its oscillatory motion, means for manually oscillatingthe propeller into operative position, and means for automatically oscillating the propeller out of operative position upon predetermined travel movement of the carrier.
13. The combination with a writing machine including line spacing means and a traveling paper supply carrier therefor, of an oscillatory propeller movable into and out of operative position by its oscillatory motion, an operative connection between the line spacing means and propeller by which the operation of the line spacer means effects operative connection of the propeller, and means for automatically rendering the propeller inoperative upon predetermined travel movement of the carrier.
14. A traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine, independent motive means for directly propelling the carrier alternately in opposite directions independently of the actuating infiuence of any corresponding movement of parts of the writing machine, and means for energizing one of said motive means by the operation of the other.
15. A traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine, including a traction bar carried thereby, a rotary driver intermittently engageable with the traction bar, motive means for the driver, said traction bar and driver being relatively adjustable into and out of operative relation, and means for relatively adjusting the driver and traction bar into and out of operative relation at selected points in the path of the traveling carner.
16. A traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine, including a traction bar carried thereby, a rotary driver movably mounted for movement into engagement therewith, motive means for the driver and means for energizing the motive means to operate the rotary driver against the traction bar.

A traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine including a gear rack, a driving pinion intermittently engageable with the gear rack, motive means for the driving pinion, and means for moving the gear pinion into and out of driving engagement withthe carrier rack at the opposite limits of the path of travel of the carrier.
18. A traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine including a gear rack, a driving pinion-intermittently engageable with the gear rack, motiv'e means for the driving pinion, and means for moving the gear pinion into and out of driving engagement with the carrier rack at selected points of the path of travel of the carrier.
19. A traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine, a bar carried thereby, a wheel engageable therewith for actuating the carrier, motive means for the wheel, and means for relatively adjusting the bar and wheel into and out of driving relation.
20. The combination with a writing machine including a reciprocatory carriage and a traveling paper supply carrier therefor, of motive means for returning the paper carrier after each line writing operation, and an interconnection between the carrier and carriage through which the writing machine carriage is returned by the return of the paper carrier.
21. A traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine, a reversible actuator therefor, motive means for the actuator and reversing means for eifecting operation thereof, first in one direction and then in the other to correspondingly propel the carrier.
22. A writing machine including a line spacing means, a traveling paper supply carrier therefor, a reversible actuator for the carrier, motive means for the actuator, and means for reversing the operative direction of the actuator by operation of the line spacing means.
23. A writing machine including a line spacing means, a traveling paper supply carrier therefor, a reversible actuator for the carrier, motive means for the actuator, and means for reversing the operative direction of the actuator by operation of the motive means.

A writing machine including a line spacing means, a traveling paper supply carrier therefor, a reversible actuator for the carrier, motive means for the actuator, a movable clutch controlling the actuator, and means for shifting the clutch for effecting reversal of the driving operation thereof and thereby reversing the direction of movement of the carrier.

A writing machine including a line spacing means; a traveling paper supply carrier therefor, a reversible actuator for the carrier, motive means for the actuator, a movable clutch controlling the actuator, and means for shifting the clutch by the operation of the line spacing means for effecting reversal of the driving operation thereof and thereby reversing the direction of movement of the carrier.

A writing machine including a line spacing means, a traveling paper supply carrier therefor, a reversible actuator for the carrier, motive means for the actuator, and electro-magnetic means controlled manually for eflecting reversal of the driving operation of the actuator and thereby reversing the direction of the movement of the carrier.

A writing machine including a line spacing means, a traveling paper supply carrier therefor, a reversible actuator for the carrier, motive means for the actuator, and electro-magnetic means controlled by the line spacing means for eifecting reversal of the driving operation of the actuator and thereby reversing the direction of movement of the carrier.

The combination with a writing machine including line spacing means, and a travelling paper supply carrier for the writing machine, of motor actuating means pertaining to the carrier and motion transmitting means engageable in alternate positions for synchronizing the operapaper supply carrier for the writing machine, of

The combination with a writing machine including line spacing means, and a traveling paper supply carrier for the writing machine, of motor actuating means for the carrier, and means for automatically actuating theline spacing means by the travel of the paper supply carrier as the latter reaches a predetermined point in its path of travel.
30., The combination with a writing machine including line spacing means, and a traveling motor actuating means of the carrier, and means for automatically actuating the line spacing means by the retractive movement of the paper supply carrier.

The combination with a Writing machine including line spacing means, and a travelling paper supply carrier for the writing machine, of motor actuating means pertaining to the paper supply carrier for actuating the paper supply carrier and operative means for actuating the line spacing means in timed relation with the movement of the paper supply carrier.

A traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine, an oscillatory propeller therefor movable into and out of actuating position by its oscillatory motion, and means for oscillating the propeller into and out of actuating position to start and stop the travel of the carrier in one direction.
33, A unitary combination consisting of a paper carrier, 2. motor for moving it in one direction, another motor for moving it in another direction, and means for operatively connecting it to a moving typewriter carriage whereby the a moving typewriter carriage whereby the typewriter carriage limits the movement of the carrier in accordance with the amount of movement of the typewriter carriage in one direction to travel in unison with it, and the carrier motivates the typewriter carriage in the other direction.

A unitary combination consisting of a paper carrier, a motor for moving it in one direction, another motor for moving it in another direction, means for operatively connecting it to a movable typewriter carriage whereby the typewriter carriage limits the movement of the carrier in accordance with the amount of movement of the typewriter carriage in one direction to travel in unison with it, and the carrier motivates the typewriter carriage in the other direction, a support forthe carrier, and means for mounting the carrier support upon a stationary part of a typewriter.
36. The combination with'a writing machine including a stationary frame and a reciprocatory carriage of a paper supply carrier having a stationary support and a reciprocatory carriage, means for establishing a fixed relation between the typewriter frame and the carrier support to reciprocatory traveling paper carrier thereon,
means for operatively connecting said carrier with a reciprocatory typewriter carriage, said carriage being spring driven in one direction, and a motor adapted to drive the carrier and therethrough the tyepwriter carriage in the opposite direction.
38. The combination with a typewriter having a reciprocatory spring driven carriage, of an attachable device, consisting of a stationary support, a reciprocatory carrier mounted thereon, means for operatively connecting the carriage with the carrier, an electric motor for operating the carrier in opposition to the influence of'said spring driven carriage, also mounted on said support and operatively connected to the carrier so as to operate the typewriter carriage.
39. A device for operating a spring driven typewriter carriage, consisting of an attachable unit comprising a support, a reciprocatory carrier mounted on said support, an electric motor for driving the carrier in a direction opposite to the influence of said spring driven carriage, and means for operatively connecting the carrier to the typewriter carriage to operate the typewriter carriage in the same direction.
40. An attachable typewriter device, consisting of a support, an electric motor, a reciprocatory carrier operatively connected with the motor, and means for operatively connecting the carrier with a reciprocatory spring driven typewriter carriage for the purpose of operating the typewriter carriage in a direction opposite to the influence of the spring.

An attachable typewriter device, consisting of a support, an electric motor, a reciprocatory carrier operatively connected with the motor, means for operatively connecting the carrier with a reciprocatory spring driven typewriter carriage for the purpose of operating the typewriter carriage in a direction opposite to the influence of the normal movement of the spring driven carriage, and means for holding the support in proper relative position to the typewriter base.

The combination with a traveling paper supply carrier for a writing machine 0t an actu- -ating motor therefor mounted for movement into and out of operative driving relation with the carrier, means for moving the motor into operative engagement in response to certain operations of the writing machine and means for auto-r maticaily disconnecting the motor by the motor propelled movement of the carrier.
43. A detachable power unit for returning the reciprocatory carriage of a writing machine normally driven in one direction by a spring motor,
said power unit including a reciprocatory bar mounted independently of the writing machine and detachably connected to said reciprocatory carriage through a pair of spaced parallel bars for travel movement therewith in a path parallel to the direction or travel thereof, a normally disconnected motor and means for intermittently operatively connecting and disconnecting the motor with said bar for causing said motor to return said bar and said carriage against the force of said spring.
44. A detachable power unit for returning the reciprocatory carriage of a writing machine driven in one direction by a spring motor, said power unit including a reciprocatory bar mounted independently of the writing machine and connected to said reciprocatory carriage for unison travel therewith in a path parallel to the direction of travel thereof, a normally disconnected motor, manually controlled means for initiating the operative driving engagement of the motor and said bar for causing the motor to return the carriage against the force of said spring and means operated by the power transmitted by the motor for disengaging the motor from said bar upon the return of the carriage.
45. A detachable power unit for returning the reciprocatory carriage of a writing machine driven in one direction by a spring motor, said power unit including a reciprocatory bar mounted independentlyof the writing machine and detachably connected to said reciprocatory carriage for travel therewith in a path parallel to the direction of travel thereof, a motor movably mounted for bodily movement into and out of driving engagement with the bar to return said bar and said carriage against the force of said spring.
46. A detachable power unit for returning the reciprocatory carriage of a writing machine driven in one direction by a spring motor, said power unit including a bar connected to said reciprocatory carriage for unison travel therewith in a path parallel to the direction of travel thereof, a
same out of engagement with said bar motor adjustably mounted for bodily movement into and out of engagement with said bar to return said bar and said carriage against the force of said spring and a portion carried by said bar for engagement with the motor to move the upon the return of said carriage.

A detachable paper carrier attachment for use with writing machines having a reciprocatory carriage spring driven in one direction, said paper carrier including a pair of spaced arms frictionally engaging said carriage, and a motor for returning the carrier and through said arms said carriage against the force exerted by said spring at the will of the operator.

A detachable power unit for returningthe reciprocatory carriage of a typewriting machine actuated in one direction through a step by step movement, said power unit including a motor, a bar connected to said reciprocatory carriage for travel therewith in a path parallel to the direction of travel thereof, the engageable and disengageable by the bodily movement of one of said members relative to the other for causing said motor to return said car'- riage against the force of said spring when engaged with said bar.

A detachably mounted power unit for operating reciprocatory carriages, consisting oil a support upon which are mounted a motor having a rotary armature and a reciprocatory carrier frictionally connectible thereto, means for operatively connecting the carrier to a reciprocatory device for transmission of movement thereto and means for holding said support in a'detachably mounted position relative to the reciprocatory device.

An attachment for a typewriter having a reciprocatory carriage spring driven in one direction, including a bar mounted independently oi the typewriter for reciprocatory movement in a direction parallel to the path of movement of the reciprocatory carriage, means for detachably connecting the reciprocatory bar to the typewriter carriage, for unison movement therewith, an actuating motor associated with said bar, one of said members being bodily movable into and out of operative engagement with the other for driving said carriage in a direction opposite to the force exerted by said spring upon said carriage.

An attachment for a typewriter having a reciprocatory carriage spring driven in one direction including a bar mounted for reciprocatory movement in a direction parallel to the path of travel of said carriage, means for detachably corinecting said bar to said carriage including a Pair of bars engaging opposite ends of the carriage, and a motor mounted for movement towards the bar for driving the same and the carriage in opposition tothe force exerted by said spring to return the carriage through said bar,
