This invention pertains to car underframes and more particularly to a cast steel underframe for a four-wheel car provided with inboard roller bearing wheel and axleassemblies.
It is an object of this invention to provide a cast steel underframe adapted for use with a four-wheel car having wheel and axle assemblies with inboard bearings.
Another object of this invention .is to provide cast steel underframes wherein center sill construction is adapted as a mounting for the wheel and axle assemblies.
Still another object is to provide a car underframe having integral draft gear pocket casting and pedestals for cooperative engagement with wheel and axle assemblies.
A further object is to provide a simple underframe construction wherein longitudinal and vertical strength are combined withsuitable mountings for draft gears and wheel and axle assemblies, without a multiplicity of members.
A yet further object is to provide a car underframe construction and spring suspension therefor which provides a four-wheel car construction of easy riding qualities, is inexpensive to make and maintain, and fulfills all requirements of manufacture and service.
With these and various other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, drawings and claims appended hereto.
In the drawings, which illustrate embodiments of the device and wherein like reference characters are used to designate like parts- Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a car underframe construction embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the car under-frame construction illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary end elevation of the car underframe construction shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional elevation taken substantially in the plane as ind cated by the line 4--4 of Figure 1;
Figures 5 to 11 inclusive, are enlarged fragmentary side elevations adjacent the pedestals showing different forms of spring arrangements adapted for use with the car underframe construction illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive.
Referring first of all more particularly to the car construction illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the spaced pedestal sills extending between the wheel and axle assemblies are provided with integrally formed suitably spaced transverse connecting members 22 and integrally formed cross members or body bolsters 24 merging into the spaced pedestal sills adjacent the pedestal jaws 26. Bracing for the sills and cross members is effected by means of the diagonally disposed brace members 28 spaced from the longitudinal center line of the underframe and integrally formed with the cross member and spaced pedestal sills.
The draft gear pocket or housing 30 is cast integral with the underframe and is provided with spaced draft sills 32 having integrally formed front and rear draft lugs 34 and 36, respectively, said sills merging into the cross members 24 at the junction of said diagonal brace members 28. The draft gear pocket is provided with the striking casting 38 and the upper connecting brackets 40 disposed adjacent thereto, adapted to be secured to the end sills 42 suit- 0 ably fastened to the brackets and pockets as by' means of the rivets 44. The draft gear pocket is connected to the spaced pedestal sills by means of .the transversely disposed integrally formed end beam members 46 merging into the spaced pedestal sills adjacent the outer 'jaw of the pedestals 26, a suitable fillet 48 being disposed between the draft sills and the end beam members.
Side sills 50 are connected to the end sills as at 52 and to the spaced pedestal sills by means of suitably spaced transverse cross members 54 connected as at 56 thereto. The pedestal jaws 26 are adapted to have sliding cooperation through the wear surfaces 58 with cooperating pedestal engaging surfaces formed on the outer casing or housing 60 of the wheel and axle assembly 62. The wheel and axle assembly 62 is preferably of the inboard roller bearing type such as shown generally in Oelkers Patent No. 1,872,797, granted August 23, 1932, but may be or any type having bearings and pedestal engaging means between the opposite paired wheels.
The preferable wheel and axle assembly consists essentially of the outer stationary housing 60 and the inner rotatable axle 64 provided with the wheel 66, suitable anti-friction bearings being interposed between the inner and outer axles. In the spring suspension illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the housing or casing 60 is pro- 50 vided with the coil spring seats 61 disposed be: tween the pedestal jaws and in vertical alignment with similar seats 68 provided on the spaced pedestal sills between said pedestal jaws, coil springs 10 being disposed between the seats 61 and 88 for resiliently supporting the underframe on the wheel and axle assembly.
In the spring suspension illustrated in Figure 5, the spaced pedestal jaws I2 are formed on the spaced pedestal sills and slidably receive the housing I4 of the wheel and axle assembly 16. In this construction the housing is provided with the leaf spring seat I8 adapted to accommodate the spring band 80 of the semi elliptic leaf spring 82, the ends of said semielliptic leaf spring engaging the spring seat 84 and being adapted to be received between the spaced plates 86 forming the pedestal jaws, said plates being suitably connected by means of straps 88.
In the car construction illustrated in Figure 6 the spaced pedestal sills 20 are provided with the inner leaf spring seat 90 but are provided with the outer coil spring pocket 82 adapted to receive the coil spring 84 seated on the seat 98 provided in said pocket. The opposite end of the coil spring is disposed on the seat 98 supported on the outer leg I00 of the semi-elliptic leaf spring assembly I02, the inner leg I04 thereof being seated on the seat 80. The center spring band I06 of the leaf spring is received in the leaf spring seat I8 provided on the housing 14 of the wheel and axle assemblies I6. It is of course to be understood that the spring pocket 82 may be provided in place of the spring seat 90, in which case the spring seat 90 would be provided in place of the spring pocket 92, or a plurality of coil spring pockets 32 may be provided, one being disposed as shown at 82 and the other r in place of the spring "seat 80.
In the underframe construction illustrated in Figure 7 the pedestal sills 20 are provided with the leaf spring seat I08 adapted to accommodate the upper spring band IIO of the full elliptic leaf spring assembly II2, the lower spring band II4 being received in the spring seat 18 of the housing 16 of the wheel and axle assembly I4.
In the car construction illustrated in Figure 8, the pedestal sills 20 are provided with depending pedestal jaws H6 adapted to slidably receive the pedestal cooperating surfaces II8, provided on the housing I20 of the wheel and axle assembly I22. In this construction the housing is provided with the spaced coil spring seats I24 disposed on each side of the axle and shown as substantially in horizontal alignment with the cellar I25 of the housing, the pedestal jaws IIB including the spaced plates I28 and provided with the coil spring seats I30 suitably connected to the plates by means of the brace members I32 as shown. These seats are shown as substantially below the top of the housing, it being understood, however, that the relative vertical position of the seats I24 and I30 may be determined by the length of the spring desired. Coil springs I34 are disposed between the seats I24 and I30 for resiliently supporting the underframe on the wheel and axle assembly.
In the structures illustrated in Figures 9 to 11 inclusive, the pedestal sills 20 are provided with the pedestals I2 and the spaced leaf spring seats 84, all disposed between the spaced plates 86 of the pedestal. The semi-elliptic leaf springs 82 supportingly engage the spring seats 84 adjacent the ends of said springs. In the construction shown in Figure 9 the housing 16 of the wheel and axle assembly 14 is provided with the spring seat I8 adapted to receive the spring band 80 of the semi-elliptic spring. In this case the pedestal sills are provided with the spaced coil spring pockets I34 adapted to accommodate the coil springs I36 seated on the seats I38 in said pockets and the opposite ends thereof seating on the leaf spring assembly 82 on each side of the spring band.
In the construction shown in Figure-10, the coil springs I36 seat on the coil spring seats I38 provided in the sprlngpockets I34 of the pedestal sills 20, the opposite ends of the coil springs seating on each side of the spring band 80 of the leaf spring assembly 82. In this construction, however, the housing I40 of the wheel and axle assembly I42 is provided with spaced leaf spring seats I44 disposed in substantially vertical alignment with the spring seats I38 to support the leaf spring I32 in substantially vertical alignment with the contact between said coil springs and said leaf spring whereby the frictional absorption of the leaf springs is increased by compression of the leaves between the seats I44 and the coil spring I36.
In the car construction illustrated in Figure 11, the housing I6 of the wheel and axle assembly I4 slidably receives the pedestals 86 and is provided with the leaf spring seat I8 adapted to receive the spring band 80 of the leaf spring assembly 82. In this case the pedestal sills are provided with a single coil spring pocket I40 having a coil spring seat I48. The coil spring I50 is seated in said pocket and on the spring cap I52 seated on the spring band 80 whereby the coil and leaf springs support the underframe in parallel relation to each other.
With the constructions shown it will be appreciated that a car underframe construction is provided adapted particularly for use with fourwheel cars providing a form of construction which is adequately strong longitudinally and vertically and provides a vehicle having easy riding qualities, and which combines its several necessary functions in a simple form whereby a minimum number of members is required.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiments of the device shown, which are merely by way of illustration and not limitation, as various and other forms of the device will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an axle provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces dis-- posed inwardly of the wheels thereof, a cast underframe including spaced pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substan tially in alignment with said pedestals, diagonally disposed brace members connecting said pedestal sills and cross member, a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross member, said housing having draft sills each of which is in substantial alignment with the connection between said diagonal brace members and said cross member, and resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said axle.
2. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an axle provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed inwardly of the wheels thereof, a ,cast
underframe including spaced pedestal sills hav ing pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in alignment with said pedestals, diagonally, disposed brace members connecting said pedestal sills and cross member, a draft gear housing cast 6 integral with said cross member, said housing. having draft sills each of which is in substantial alignment with the connection between said diagonal brace members and said cross member, end beam members connecting said spaced 10 pedestal sills and said'draft gear housing intermediate the ends thereof, and resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said axle.
3. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an inner and an outer axle, said inner axle being normally rotatable and said outer axle being normally nonrotatable, said outer axle being provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed adjacent each end thereof and inwardly 'of the wheels thereof, a cast underframe including spaced pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with each of said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in alignment with said pedestals, a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross member, said housing having spaced draft sills, and resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said outer axle.
4. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an axle provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed inwardly of the wheels thereof, acast.
underframe including spaced pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with said pedestal surfaces, 9. cross member-integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in alignment with said pedestals, a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross memher, said housing having spaced draft. sills, end beam members connecting said spaced pedestal sills and said draft gear housing intermediate the ends thereof, and resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said axle.
5.. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an inner and an outer axle, said inner axle being normally rotatable and said outer axle being normally non-rotatable, said outer axle being provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed adjacent each end thereof and inwardly of the wheels thereof, a cast underframe including spaced 5 pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with each of said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in alignment with said pedestals, diagonally disposed brace members 0 connecting said pedestal sills, and cross member, a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross member, said housing having draft sills each of which is in substantial alignment with the connection between said diagonal brace members and 65 said cross member, and resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said outer axle, said resilient means including springs of different character in series-paralleL l v 70 6. In acar construction, the combination ofan inboard wheel and axle assembly having an inner and an outer axle, said inner axle being normally rotatable and said outer axle being normally non-rotatable, said outer. axle being provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed adjacent each end thereof and inwardly of the wheels thereof, a cast underframe including spaced pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with each of said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in alignment with said pedestals, diagonally disposed brace members connecting said pedestal sills and cross member, a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross member, said housing having draftsills each of which is in substantial alignment with the connection between said diagonal brace memmrs and said cross member, resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said outer axle, said resilient means including a. semi-elliptic spring engaging said outer axle at a plurality of points and engaging said pedestal sills at a plurality of points.
8. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an iner and an outer axle, said inner axle being normally rotatable and said'outer axle being normally non-rotatable, said outer axle being provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed adjacent each end thereof and inwardly of the wheels thereof, a cast under-frame including spaced pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with each of said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in alignment with said pedestals, diagonally disposed brace members connecting said pedestal sills and cross member, a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross member, said housing having draft sills each of which is in substantial alignan inboard wheel and axle assembly having an inner and an outer axle, said inner axle being normally rotatable and said outer axle being normally non-rotatable, said outer axle being provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed adjacent each end thereof and inwardly of the wheels thereof, a cast underframe including spaced pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with each of said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in alignment with said pedestals, diagonally disposed brace members connecting said pedestal sills and cross member. a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross member, said housing having draft sills each of which is in substantial alignment with the connection between said diagonal brace members and said cross member, resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said outer axle, said resilient means including a semi-elliptic spring engaging said outer axle at a plurality of points and engaging said pedestal sills at a plurality of points. and a coil spring interposed between said semi-elliptic spring and said pedestal sills and engaging said semi-elliptic spring.
10. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an inner and an outer axle, said inner axle being normally rotatable and said outer axle being normally non-rotatable, said outer axle being provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed adjacent each end thereof and inwardly of the wheels thereof, a cast underframe including spaced pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with each of said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in align ment with said pedestals, diagonally disposed brace members connecting said pedestal sills and cross member, a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross member, said housing having draft sills each of which is in substantial alignment with the connection between said diagonal brace members and said cross member, resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said outer axle, said resilient means including a semi-elliptic spring engaging said outer axle at a plurality of points and engaging said pedestal sills at a plurality of points, and spaced coil springs cngaging said pedestal sills and a leaf of said semielliptic spring.
11. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an inner and an outer axle, said inner axle being normally rotatable and said outer axle being normally non-rotatable, said outer axle being provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed adjacent each end thereof and inwardly of the wheels thereof, a cast underframe including spaced pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with each of said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in alignment with said pedestals, diagonally disposed brace members connecting said pedestal sills and cross member, a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross member, said housing having draft sills each of which is in substantial alignment with the connection between said diagonal brace members and said cross member, and resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said outer axle, said resilient means including coil springs disposed between the top of said outer axle and said pedestal sills.
12. In a car construction, the combination of i an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an inner and an outer axle, said inner axle being normally rotatable and said outer axle being normally non-rotatable, said outer axle being pro vided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed adjacent each end thereof and inwardly of the wheels thereof, a cast underframe lncludlng spaced pedestal sills having pedestals including pedestal jaws cooperating with each of said pedestal surfaces, a cross member integrally connecting said pedestal sills substantially in alignment with said pedestals, diagonally disposed brace members connecting said pedestal sills and cross member, a draft gear housing cast integral with said cross member, said housing having draft sills each of which is in substantial alignment with the connection between said diagonal brace members and said cross member, and resilient means disposed between said jaws and interposed between said pedestal sills and said outer axle, said resilient means including a coil spring disposed between the top of said outer axle' and said pedestal sills.
13. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced pedestal sills having pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, and diagonal brace members connecting said sills and cross member.
14. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced pedestal sills having pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, and diagonal brace members connecting said sills and cross member, said brace members being connected to said cross member in substantial alignment with said draft members.
15. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, and end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members.
16. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an axle provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed inwardly of the wheels thereof, a car underframe supported thereon, said underframe comprising longitudinally disposed sills having pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation and cooperating with said surfaces, a cross member disposed between said sills, draft members extending from said cross member, and end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members.
17. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an axle provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed inwardly of the wheels thereof, a car underframe supported thereon, said underframe comprising longitudinally disposed sills having pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation and cooperating with said surfaces, 2. cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said'jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, and endbeam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members.
18. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an axle provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed inwardly of the wheels thereof, a car underframe supported thereon, said underframe comprising longitudinally disposed sills having pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation and cooperating with said surfaces, a cross member disposed between said sills, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, and diagonal brace members connecting said sills and cross member.
19. In a car construction, the combination of an inboard wheel and axle assembly having an axle provided with pedestal cooperating surfaces disposed inwardly of the wheels thereof, a car underframe supported thereon, said underframe comprising longitudinally disposed sills having pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation and cooperating with said surfaces, a cross member disposed between said sills, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, and diagonal brace members connecting said sills and cross member, said brace members being connected to said cross member in substantial alignment with said draft members.
20. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the'ends of said draft members, and a spring seat disposed on each of said sills and embraced by said jaws.
21. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between. said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, and a leaf spring seat disposed on each of said sills and embraced by said jaws.
22. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, and end beam members connecting said sillsto said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, each of said sills being formed with a spring pocket having a spring seat.
23. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of, said draft members, and a leaf spring seat on each of said sills and disposed within each of said pedestals.
24. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, a leaf spring seat on each of said sills and disposed within each of said pedestals, and a coil spring seat disposed between said leaf spring seats.
25. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills hav-- ing depending pedestal jaws disposed insubstantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, a leaf spring seat on each of said sills and disposed within each of said pedestals, each of said sills being provided with aspring pocket having a spring seat disposed between said leaf spring seats.
26. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft mem bers intermediate the ends of said draft members,
said pedestal jaws comprising spaced longitudinally disposed interconnected plates, and a spring seat adjacent each of said jaws disposed between said plates.
27. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a. cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from. said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft mem' bers intermediate the ends of said draft members, said pedestal jaws comprising spaced longitudinally disposed interconnected plates, and a leaf spring seat adjacent each of said jaws disposed between said plates.
28. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, 9. cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, and beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, said pedestal jaws comprising spaced longitudinally disposed interconnected plates, and spring seats of different character disposed adjacent said jaws and between said plates.
29. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, said pedestal jaws comprising spaced longitudinally disposed interconnected plates, a leaf spring seat adjacent each -of said jaws disposed between said plates, and a coil spring seat between said' leaf spring seats.
30. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft mem- 10 ing depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft mem- 15 bers intermediate the ends of said draft members,
said pedestal jaws comprising spaced longitudinally disposed interconnected plates, said sills being provided with a leaf spring seat depending between said plates and a recess between said plates provided with a coil spring seat.
32. In a car underframe, the combination of spaced longitudinally disposed pedestal sills having depending pedestal jaws disposed in substantially opposite relation, a cross member disposed between said sills adjacent said jaws, draft members extending from said cross member, end beam members connecting said sills to said draft members intermediate the ends of said draft members, said pedestal jaws comprising spaced longitudinaliy disposed interconnected plates, said sills being provided with leaf spring seats depending between said plates and recesses between said plates and leaf spring seats provided with coil spring seats.
