4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in'washing machines particularly for domestic use and has-for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction and arrangement of rotary tub and agitator, together with common means for manually actuating said tub and agitator simultaneously in opposite directions.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a washing machine of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient andreliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
' All of the foregoing andstill further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a view in .front elevation of a washing machine constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top planview of the invention with the cover omitted.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken sub-' stantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view in bottom plan of the tub and turntable.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the invention with the tub and other portions omitted, the opcrating-lever and agitator shaft being shown in horizontal section, certain portions being broken away to expose the drive mechanism.v
Figure 6 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially'on the line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Figure '7 is a detail view in ,vertical section, taken substantially on the line '|--'I of Fig. 3. Figure 8 is a detail view in perspective of the lever which actuates the tub and the agitator. Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a supporting stand which is designated generally by the reference'numeral I. Mounted on the supporting stand I below the top thereof is a, base or platform 2 on which the hub 3 of a turntable 4 is mounted for rotation, said hub 3 being mounted on a thrust bearing 5. The turntable 4 includes a depending'peripheral flange 6. Rollers Tare provided on the supporting stand I for the turn table 4.
Secured on the turntable 4 is a tub 8 which is about the stand tube II is an agitator Hi. The
shaft l3 extends downwardly through the hub 3 and the platform 2 and has fixed on its lower end portion a sprocket gear l5.
Pivotally mounted at an intermediate point, as at It, below the platform 2 for swinging move ment in a horizontal plane is a lever ll having At an intermediate point the hand lever 24 is loosely connected to the portion 20 of the lever H by a pin and slot connection 26. A guard 21 is provided on the upper portion of the supporting stand I for the levers l1 and 24. The reference numeral 28 designates a drain for the tub 8.
It is thought that the operation of the invention will be readily apparent'from a consideration of the foregoing. When the hand lever 24 is swung in one direction the tub 8 is actuated in a corresponding direction by reason of the engagement of thearm 2| of the lever l'l in the stirrup or the like 22. However, the inner end of the lever H, which carries the chain l9, will be swung in the opposite direction in a manner to rotate the agitator I4 in the opposite direction to that in which the tub 8 is moving. It will thus be seen that the tub 8 and the agitator l4 may be rapidly oscillated in, opposite directions through the medium of the hand lever 24.
It is believed that the many advantages of a washing machine constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the. scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:--
1. A washing machine comprising a supporting stand, a tub rotatably mounted on said supporting stand, an agitator rotatably mounted in said tub, a lever pivotally mounted, at an intermediate point, on the supporting stand, means underlying the tub operatively connecting the tub to one end of said lever for actuation thereby in one direction, means underlying the tub operatively connecting the agitator to the other end of the lever for actuation thereby in the opposite direction, and means for actuating said lever. 2. A washing machine comprising a supporting stand, a tub rotatably mounted on said supporting stand, an agitator rotatably mounted in said tub, a lever pivotally mounted, at an intermediate point, on the supporting stand, an arm on one end of the lever and underlying the tub operatively connected to the tub for rotating said tub in one direction, means underlying the tub operativelyconnecting the other end of the lever to the agitator for rotating said agitator in the opposite direction, and a hand lever pivotally mounted or": the supporting stand and operatively connected to the first-named lever for actuating the same.
3. A washing machine comprising a supporting stand, a tub rotatably mounted on said sup: porting stand, a vertical rotary shaft extending into the tub from the bottom thereof, an agitator mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith in the tub, a sprocket gear on the lower end portion of said shaft, a lever pivotally mounted, at an intermediate point, on the supporting stand, a fork on one end of said lever, a sprocket chain mounted on said fork and engaged with the sprocket gear for actuating the agitator in one direction, means connecting the other end of the lever to the under side of the tub for actuating said tub in the opposite direction, and means for actuating said lever.
4. A washing machine of the class descri comprising a supporting stand, a platform on said supporting stand, rollers mounted on the supporting stand, a turntable mounted on the rollers, said turntable including a hub journaled on the platform, a tub fixed on the turntable, a rotary shaft extending vertically through the platform, the hub, the turntable and the bottom of the tub, an agitator fixed on the upper end portion of said shaft for rotation in the tub, a lever pivotally mounted, at an intermediate point, on the supporting stand, means operatively connecting the shaft to one end of the lever for actuation in one direction thereby, means operatively connecting the tub to the other end of said lever for actuation in the opposite direction thereby, and a hand lever operatively connected to the first named lever for actuating the same.
