(cuss-109) My invention pertains to oil burners and more particularly to means for supplying oil thereto. It is an object of my'invention to provide an improved oil burner comprising an oil throwing device mounted upon the extended end of a driving motor shaft .which is ap'ertured to supply fuel oil to the throwing device andwhich is provided with an improved oil sealing device for connecting the opposite end of the shaft to a source of oil under pressure providing an oil tightseal to prevent leakage of oil into the motor.
It is also an object of my invention to provide an improved oil sealing connection for feeding oil from a stationary oil supply into a rotating oil throwing device. I
It is a further object of my invention to provide an oil burner comprising a motor driven oil throwing device supplied with oil by an oil feeding aperture extending through the motor shaft with associated oil sealing means for connecting the end of the apertured shaft with a stationary oil supply in conjunction with means for catching and discharging leakage oil from the oil sealing device and from the adjacent motor bearing.
The'invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its useful applications together with additional objects and advantages thereof,
will best be understood -from the following description of a specific embodiment, when readrin conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line II--II thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the apparatus comprises. an electrically driven motor I having an elongated rotor supporting shaft 3 which extends beyond the shaft supporting bearings 5 'supportedin the stator in the usual manner. The extension of the motor shaft 3 is greatly elongated on one side of the motor for'supporting a combined air blower oil throwing device thereon.
The combined blower oil throwing construc'-' tion comprises a disc I of Sheet metal which is supported in a plane transverse to the axis of the shaft 3 upon spokes 9 (of'which only one is shown) which extend radially from a hub H.
The hub I l is provided with an axial apertu're l3 and fastening means for presenting a smooth low friction surface.
For centrifugally throwing a. blast of air a blower is provided on the disc I which comprises radially extending vanes l9 secured thereto in any suitable manner as by welding. In order to throw a finely divided spray of oil into the blast of air projected by the radially extended vanes of the blower oil tubes 2| (of which onlyone is shown) extend radially from the hub member II in outwardly inclined relation into the spaces between the air throwing vanes IS. The aperture 13 in the hub l I is supplied with fuel oil through an oil feeding aperture 23 which ex tends axially through the entire length of the motor shaft 3 and is connected with a suitable oil supply line 25 at the opposite end thereof.
A housing 2lis connected on one side ofthe driving motor I for inclosing the oil throwing blower and the extended drive shaft 3 and it is provided with a supporting flange 29 for mounting the unit to project the air blast into a furnace 3|. The outer edge of the housing comprises a circular air deflecting guard 33 whichv of air therethroughis regulated by means of a damper 31', which is supported on a-pivot 39 in air obstructing relation. The position ofthe damper in the passageway is controlled by means of an actuator bar 4! engaging a portion of the damper 31 at one side of the pivot and actuated automatically inany suitable manner.
The end of the motorsha'ft 3 which extends on the opposite side of the motor I is surrounded by a casing member 45 which projects concentrically about the shaft 3 from the stator of the motor. The casing member 45 is closed by a cap member "which is secured thereon by suitable cap screws.
49.- For connecting the end of the apertured shaft 3 with any suitable oil pipe line 25 which may supply oil under pressure a pipe fitting 5| is provided in the cap member and it opens into the space enclosed thereby.
The fuel oil which is supplied under pressure must be prevented from seeping into the motor through the bearing around the shaft, and for this purpose I provide a diaphragm like mem- 'ber which is clamped between the outer edge of the casing 45 and the cap 41 secured thereon and comprises a flexible hermetically sealed sup--' port for a sealing ring 53. To provide an oil tight seal between the movable diaphragm supported ring 53 and the shaft 3, a sealing sleeve 51 of soft material is disposed therebetween. The sealing sleeve 51 may be of a lead base alloy or leather, 5 or other similar soft material suitable for establishing a tight seal between the relatively moving members and it is provided with a flange 59 which projects laterally from the end of the sleeve to provide a seal adjacent the end of the motor bearing.
For continuously urging the diaphragm connected sealing ring 53 towards the motor a heavy compression spring 6! is provided in the casingv cap member 41 which carries an adjustable threaded stop 63 for receiving the outer end of the spring. The inner end of the spring Si is concentrically disposed about the end of the motor shaft 3 and presses upon the sealing ring 53 inaccordance with the tension'applied thereto by means of the adjustable stop 63. A shaft ring 65 is mounted upon the shaft 3 between the diaphragm and the motor and it presents a smooth bearing surface adjacent the motor bearing and also on the other side for engagement by the end flange 59 on the sealing sleeve 51 to provide an oil tight seal. The shaft ring 65 may be of steel, iron, bronze or other suitable material and it is pressed tightly upon the shaft 3.
In order to provide for conveniently adjusting the stop member a removable plug 61 is threadedly supported in the end of the cap member I! which may be removed to afford access for a tool for turning the threaded stop member 63 in the cap. In operation the continualthrust of the sealing ring 53 against the soft sealing sleeve 51 and its flange 59 provides an oil tight seal between it, the shaft 3, and the smooth surface on the shaft ring 55. The seal thus established prevents or 40 greatly minimizes the leakage of oil into the portion 69 of the divided casing which is on the side of the diaphragm 55 adjacent the motor. To
provide for the removal of small quantities of the oil which may in along period oftime enter this compartment, an oil drain II is provided in the lower wall for discharging the oil therefrom. In this manner the walls of the casing 45 between the diaphragm and the motor serve to catch the leakage of oil both from the oil seal and the motor bearing, thereby preventing it from being thrown about the basement or the premises where the blower unit is installed. 7 a It will be seen that I have provided an oil burner comprising an oil thrower mounted on the extended shatter the driving motor and means for connecting a stationary source of oil to the oil thrower through the shaft including oil seali means and oil' discharging means for catching and discharging leakage oil from both the oil sealing device or the driving motor.
Aside from the specific embodiment of the invention herein shown and described it will be understood that various details of the construction may be altered without departing from the 5 spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed and claimed, and that 'I do not desire to limit the 'invention to the exact arrangement herein set forth.
' I claim as my invention:
1. In a fluid combination of a shaft, a bearing for rotatably supporting said shaft, a fluid supply line for supplying fluid, a pipe fitting, fluid sealing means for securing said pipe fitting in sealed relation to the end of said shaft for feeding oil thereto, said '1 for rotating apparatus the sealing means comprising a shaft ring disposed snugly around the-shaft adjacent said bearing, a sealing ring disposed around said shaft in adjacent spaced relation thereto, a sealing sleeve of soft sealing material concentrically disposed on said shaft between said sealing ring and the shaft, said sealing sleeve having a laterally projecting flange interposed between said sealing ring and said shaft ring, flexible means providing a sealed support for said sealing ring, and biasing means for continuously urging the sealing ring toward the shaft ring. 2. In a fluid seal for rotating apparatus the combination of a shaft, a bearing for rotatably supporting said shaft, a fluid supply line for supplying fluid, a pipe fitting, fluid sealing means for securing said pipe fitting in sealed relation on the end of said shaft, said sealing means comprising a shaft ring disposed snugly around the shaft adjacent said bearing, a sealing ring disposed in spaced relation on said shaft, a sealing sleeve disposed between said sealing ring and said shaft, said sleeve having a laterally projecting flange interposed between said sealing ring and said shaft ring, flexible means comprising a sealed support for said sealing ring, and a compression spring for continuously urging the sealing ring toward the shaft ring.
3. In a fluid seal forrotating apparatus the combination of, a shaft, abearing in which said shaft is journalled, an extended end of said shaft projecting beyond said bearing, a casing member secured on one end of said stator and projecting concentrically around the extended end of said shaft, means for connecting the extended end of the shaft to a stationary fluid supply line comprising a shaft ring disposed snugly on said shaft adjacent the shaft bearing, a sealing ring disposed around said shaft in adjacent concentric spaced relationship, a sealing sleeve of soft sealing material surrounding saidshaft and of suitable conformation for insertion between said rings and between said sealing ring and the shaft, flexible means connected between said casing and said sealing ring for supporting the sealing ring and for dividing said casing, a pipe fitting connector, means for supporting said pipe fitting connector in interconnected relation with the outer chamber of the divided casing, biasing means for continuously urging said rings together, and
means for draining leakage oil from the chamber of said divided casing adjacent the bearing.
4. In a fluid seal for rotating apparatus the combination of a shaft, bearingmeans for rotatably-journalling said shaft, an extended end of said shaft projecting beyond said bearing means,. a casing member projecting from said bearing ing ring in non-rotative relation and for dividing said casing, a pipe fitting, means for supporting said pipe fitting in interconnecting relation with the outer chamber of said divided casing, and biasing means for continuously urging said rings together.
