CARRIAGE FOR SAWING-IVIACI-IINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. C. MILLER, of Morgantown, in the county of Monongalia and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sawing Shingles, Staves, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view. Fig. 2, a cross section through the carriage. Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through the permanent and movable beds.
Similar letters of reference where they occur in the separate gures denote like parts of the machine in all of them.
My invention consists in combining with a machine for sawing shingles, staves, &c., a carriaffe having adjustable head blocks therein, which are held at any suitable distance apart, by means of hinged overlapping levers or arms, so that bolts of any length within the capacity of the saw, may be dogged and carried therein.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A, A, represent the supports or' the machine, to one of which is connected, in proper bearings, a vertical spindle B, on the top of which is placed a horizontal circular saw C.
On the longitudinal rails D, D, and over a portion of the circular rail E, which form the top :trame of the machine, are placed two ways a a, upon which the rails or cross pieces F, F, of the carriage are traversed.
The head blocks G, G, ot' the carriage, are connected to the rails F, F, by tenons on said blocks passing through long mortises Y), o, in said rails. To these tenons, are connected respectively, by pins, pivots, or screws o, o, the levers or arms H, H, H, H, two on each side of the carriage, and which arms or levers project toward, and overlap each other; and where they cross each other a pin or screw Z is inserted to hold them together. By this means the head blocks Gr, G, may be brought nearer to each other, or be farther removed, as the length of the bolt from which the shingles or staves, are to be cut, may require.
The dogs e, 6, are hinged to the head blocks and consequently are always in the proper position to catch and hold any length of bolt, within the capacity of the saw.

A cross head K, is pivoted at g, to the frame I, and has a handle L projecting rearward from it. To each arm of the crosshead, is attached one end of a rod z', the other end of said rod being connected respectively to the rails or bars J, J, so that by vibrating the handle i, the bars J, J, are alternately raised and lowered and thus form an oblique bed for the bolt to be dropped upon to give it the proper position in the carriage, for allowing a papering shingle to be cut from it, and by the alternate raising and lowering of the bars J, J, the butts and points of the shingles are reversed on the bolts.
Then the machine is used for sawing staves, the bars J, J, are arranged on the same horizontal plane, and there allowed to remain, but every time a stave is cut from he bolt it the bolt, is undogged, dropped upon the bars, dogged up, and again traversed pastv the saw, and so on, making parallel, instead of oblique cuts.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Arranging the head blocks, in long mortises in the side pieces F, F, and connecting the outer ends of said head blocks by overlapping arms or levers H, H, furnished with adjusting holes or an adjusting screw, so that any length of bolt within the capacit-y of the saw may be held and operated therein, as set forth and described.
