9 claims; (o1.n 20e- 41) 1.1....'I'hisjinvention relates to holders for cigarette packages; l
. An object of this inventionis a cigarette package holder which willi effectively prevent crushing of a partially emptied cigarette package and is of such` construction that it may be collapsed into smallgcompass or may be arranged in the form of a bracelet or the like.
; Other; objects, novel features and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following `specification and accompanying drawine.,:wherei,nr
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette pack-- agegequippedj with apholder embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top View; Figs. 4 and 5 are fragmentary side elevations; Fig. 6 is a bottom View; Fig. 7 is a section on the line I- of Fig. 6, Fig. 8 is a View similar to Fig. 6 of a modification; and
Fig. 9 is a plan View of the holder, laid out flat. In Fig. 1, ID represents a standard cigarette package having the usual inner tin foil Wrapper `Il and the outer paper wrapper I2 which does not cover the top of the package but does have flaps I3 (see Fig. 6) extending from the bottoms of its side edges and being folded inwardly. The holder comprises a rectangular wire frame I4 adapted to overlie the top of the cigarette package. The frame supports a cover I5 having a plurality of tongues I6 wrapped around one side of the frame I4 to hinge the cover I5 thereon. A spring I'I has two coil portions surrounding said frame side and a portion bearing against the cover I5 tending to swing the same into the position shown in Fig. 1. A side strip I8 is `hinged to each end of the frame I by looping the strip around the frame. A wing I9 is formed from an extension of the strip I8 beyond the hinged loop and is of substantially the same width as the cigarette package. A loop 20 is hinged to the bottom of each side strip I8 by bending the end of the strip around the loop. The two loop members 20 are adapted to extend between the bottom of the package and the flaps I3 into the interlocking relation shown in Figs. 6 and 7; one loop member 20 being provided with a shoulder 2| for locking engagement with the other loop member as shown in Fig. 7. The front edge 22 of the upper hinged portion of each side strip I8 is outwardly flared. Each end of the cover is cut out at 23 to receive such hinged portion and permit swinging of each side strip I8 into a position approximately from the position shown in Fig. 1. 'I'heforward wall of eachv cut-out portion is provided with an ear 24 which is adapted for engagement under the flared edge 22 to lock the cover in closed position.
VIn Vthe use of the holder, the tin foil is removed fromgthetop of a cigarette package and the wings .I @are inserted-between the inner and outer wrappers.; The loops `fillljare then' passed between the bottom of the package. and` the flaps I3 into the relationship shown4 inFig. 6, thereby locking the holder around the package. During the application ofthe holder to the package, thecover I5 is in closed position as shown in Fig. 4. When itis desired tof obtain access to the cigarettes, the frame I 4V is slid forwardthrough the upper hinges of the side bars I8 sufficiently to disengage the ears fromthe flange portions 22 thereby permitting the spring -I ,to liftthe cover. 4'Ihecovel after being closed is locked by reversing the portion just described.
A In the modication disclosed in Fig. 8, the loops i3 are replaced by a single loop I3a hinged to the bottom of one of the side strips I 8 which extends the full width of the cigarette package. The loop I3a is provided with inturned ends |317 which ex- ,tend into the hinged member at the bottom of the other side strip I8. This modification is applied to the cigarette package as above described eX- cept that the ends I 3b of the loop |30. are assembled with the side strip I8 by spreading them apart and then inserting them in the hinged portion.
The holder above described may be folded into a compact arrangement by reason of the various hinged connections. It may be arranged as a long at member (Fig. 9) or the various portions may be folded on themselves so that the overall length is merely that of the frame I4. Also, the holder when not in use with a cigarette package may be formed into a bracelet-like loop or arranged in a closure of different forms as may be desired. The Various parts of the holder may be formed of any suitable material but preferably are composed of a metal which may be given a highly polished surface.
I claim:
l. A cigarette package holder comprising a top frame, side members hinged to the en ds of said frame and having wings for insertion between the inner and outer wrappers of the cigarette package, and means adapted to extend between the l bottom of the cigarette package and folded aps Cil outer wrapper and being provided with interlocking means.
3. A cigarette package holder comprising a top frame, side members hinged to the ends of said frame and having wings for insertion between the inner and outer wrappers of the cigarette package, a loop hinged to one of said side members and being adapted to extend between the bottom of the package and folded aps extending from the bottom edges of the outer wrapper, and means for connecting said loop to the bottom of the other side member.
4. A cigarette package holder comprising a top frame, a cover hinged to one side thereof, side strips slidably connected to the frame ends and means on said strips and cover engageable by relative movement to lock the cover to the frame.
5. In a cigarette package holder comprising a top frame, a cover hinged to one side thereof and having cutout portions in its ends, side strips slidably connected to the frame ends and having flared portions extending into said cut-out portion, and ears on said cover engageable by relative movement of the frame and strips with said ared portions to lock the cover to the frame.
6. A cigarette package holder comprising a top frame, side members connected to the ends of the frame and having wings for insertion between the inner and outer Wrappers of the cigarette package, and extensions from the bottom ends of said side members for engaging the bottom of the package to secure the cigarette package in the holder.
7. A cigarette package holder comprising a top frame, side members connected to the ends of the frame and having wings for insertion between ,the inner and outer wrappers of the cigarette package, extensions from the bottom ends of said side members, and means for interlocking said extensions for securing the cigarette package in said holder.
8. A cigarette package holder comprising a top frame, side members hinged to the end of said frame and having wings for insertion between the inner and outer wrappers of the cigarette package, and means hinged to the bottom ends of said side members and extending across the bottom of the cigarette package for securing the package in said holder.
9. A cigarette package holder comprising a top frame, side members hinged to the end of said frame and having wings for insertion between the inner and outer wrappers of the cigarette package, and means connecting the bottom ends of said side members, said means extending across the bottom of the package and securing the same in said holder.
