5 Claims.
This invention relates to a valve body for working barrels of the kind used in lift or beam or any type of hydraulic plunger. pumps and it generally aims to provide a novel packing means therefor which will be effective at all times, automatically compensate for wear and be expeditiously applied.
It is further aimed to provide such a packing means which will be maintained effective by a fluid pressure and vacuum within the pump.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, H3 designates a working barrel valve body of any desired size or kind, for a conventional lift or beam or hydraulic plunger pumps in accordance with my invention, the exterior of such valve 18 is provided with one or more spiral grooves ll of any desired extent and preferably square in cross section as shown. Such grooves at the opposite ends are overlapped by walls or plates l2 and I3, such plates for instance being welded to the body It. Leading from the bore of the body l and communicating with the bases of the grooves H are orifices or openings E5, the latter being of any desired number and preferably be- 45 ing relatively close together.
Fitting the grooves ll normally flush with the periphery of the body If], are strips of packing 16. Such strips are square in cross section, preferably, and are of any suitable flexible mate- 50 rial, for instance being composed of a plurality of sheets or plies riveted together at intervals as at I! to prevent separation. Such plies may be of textile fabric or they may be such fabric impregnated with rubber, or instead they may be of any other packing material. At one end, such strips l6 have reduced tongues l8 fitting intimately beneath the plates l3 and being anchored to the body by means of screws It passing through such plates l3, tongues l8 and being threaded into the body Ii! proper.
At the opposite ends, strips [6 have reduced portions or tongues 26), provided with elongated slots 2|. Screws 22 pass through the plates l2, slots 2i and are screwed into the body IEI proper. Initially the innermost ends of the slots 2! are in contact with screw 22 and a pin 23 passes through registering openings to plate I2, tongue and valve it proper, as shown in Figure 3. This pin 28 is relatively frail so as to be fractured or broken through expansion and elongation of the packing strip.
In the use of the device, the valve body Ill is positioned with the strips in the position shown in the drawing, flush with the periphery of valve body it, and anchored by the pins 23. Thereafter when the strips are subjected to the oil or liquid being pumped, pins 23 will be fractured and the strips permitted to move in the grooves, toward the anchors E9, to the extent permitted by the length of the slots 2|. The packing to some extent absorbs the liquid. In addition, the suction incidental to operation and the pressure passing through the openings l5, maintains the packing in eifective engagement with the cylinder or working barrel for the body It, such packing being drawn to the anchored ends l9 automatically, as required, and also to take up wear.
The valve body ill on the exterior thereof, between the grooves ll, is preferably flattened as at 24 to facilitate engagement by a wrench or turning tool.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A valved piston body of the class described having spiral packing grooves, packing strips disposed in said grooves, said valve body having openings leading to said grooves through which hydrostatic pressure in said body acts to expand said packing, means anchoring each strip at one end of each of said grooves and the strip being slip-connected in the grooves at their other ends.
2. A valved piston body of the class described having spiral packing grooves, packing strips disposed in said grooves, said valve body having openings leading to said grooves through which hydrostatic pressure in said body acts to expand said'packing, means anchoring each strip at one end of each of said grooves and the strip being slip-connected in the grooves at their other ends, and plates at opposite ends of said grooves beneath which the strip is disposed.
3. A valved piston body of the class described having spiral packing grooves, packing strips disposed in said grooves, said valve body having openings leading to said grooves through which hydrostatic pressure in said body acts to expand said packing, means anchoring each strip at one end of each of said grooves and the strip being slip-connected in the grooves at their other ends, plates at opposite ends of said grooves beneath which the strips are disposed, the plate at one end of each of the grooves having a fastening therethrough, and each strip having an elongated slot through which the fastening passes.
4. A valved piston body of the class described having spiral packing grooves, packing strips disposed in said grooves, said valve body having openings leading to said grooves through which hydrostatic pressure in said body acts to expand said packing, means anchoring each strip at one end of each of said grooves and the strip being slip-connected in the grooves at their other ends, plates at opposite ends of said, grooves beneath which the strips are disposed, the plate at one end of each of the grooves having a fastening therethrough, each strip having an elongated slot through which the fastening passes, and fracturable means initially anchoring the last mentioned end of each strip in the groove containing the strip.
5. A valved piston body of the class described having spiral packing grooves, packing strips disposed in said grooves, said valve body having openings leading to said grooves through which hydrostatic pressure in said body acts to ex pand said packing, means anchoring each strip at one end of each of said grooves and the strip being slip-connected in the grooves at their other ends, plates at opposite ends of said grooves beneath which the strips are disposed, the plate at one end of each of the grooves having a fastening therethrough, each strip having an elongated slot through which the fastening passes, and fractur able means initially anchoring the last mentioned end of each strip in the groove containing the strip, and means anchoring the other end of the strip in the groove, one of said means being fracturable through elongation of the strip.
