This invention relates to a secret lock, which consists in mounting freely several toothed wheels each having one slit upon a sleeve having a slit at one side and fixed to a frame movable up and down, these wheels being meshed with several driving wheels able to be turned at first in one direction and then the opposite direction at any selected intervals by a knob provided outside a casing; and inserting the tongue of a locking plate movable vertically and horizontally, into said sleeve, said locking plate being adapted to be displaced at an unlocking position only when all the slits of the driven wheels are alined with the slit of said sleeve. One object of this invention is to obtain a secret lock which cannot be manipulated without the knowledge of the numbers secretly selected by its owner. The other object of this invention is to obtain such a secret lock that without an indicating needle and graduation the looking or unlocking may be effected in an easy and secret way even in the darkness by simply turning the knob by feeling.

In the drawing, 1 and 2 is a casing divided into two front and rear parts, which form a closed casing by being united by three bolts 3, 4 and 5. A hook 6 has one end pivoted to the bolt 3 in such a manner that it can rock round the latter so that a hook I at the other end goes in and. out of the casing freely through the perforation of the wall of the casing. B is a vertically movable plate guided at both sides by the side walls of the casing and slidable up and down, maintaining l6 which has a longitudinal slit 9 at one side 5 and has mounted freely thereon toothed wheels l2 and E3 of the same shape each having a radial slit l l in front of and at the back of the frame 8. A shaft l5 with a knob id at its front end pierces the front wall of the casing l and is loosely mounted in a fixed sleeve l6 projecting inwardly from the back wall. Upon thisshaft is mounted fixedly a toothed wheel l'l' which meshes with the toothed wheel I 2 mentioned above. Upon the sleeve it is also. mounted freely a toothed wheel ill of the same shape as the toothed wheel I! in such a manner that it can mesh with the back toothed wheel H3. The back of the front toothed wheel I? and the front of the back toothed wheel l8 are provided with projections l9 and respectively which cooperate with each other, so that when the knob I4 is turned, for instance, in a clockwise direction as seen from its front, the front wheel I! will rotate with its shaft till the projection I9 is engaged with the projection 20 to rotate the back wheel l3 also, and then if the knob is turned in the opposite direction, the back wheel will be left in that position and the front one I] alone be rotated. l V
A locking plate 2| has at its upper portion a locking pinv 22 to mesh with the locking, hook I and also has lugs 22' and 23 projecting forwardly at the upper and lower edges respectively, whereby it is disposed in front of the front wheels I! and I2, maintaining a certain distancetfrom the front wall of the casing and can slide up and down and right and left, although normally pressed to a locking position by a spring 24. Said locking plate 2i has a tongue 25 inserted in the sleeve l0 through the slit 9, and the vertically movable plate 8 is-pierced with an elongated aperture 26 to permit the lateral movement of said tongue, so that when the slits H of the lower wheels l2 and I3 are brought into coincidence with the aperture 26 of the vertically movable plate 8 and with the slit 9 of the sleeve H], the tongue 25 may be moved sidewise as far as said elongated aperture 26 allows, in consequence of which the locking plate 2! and the locking pin 22 also are moved sidewise to release the locking hook. r r
In order to rotate the wheel I! intermittently one tooth at a time by the knob land to be able to perceive the angular displacement, there is provided an elastic braking means which consists of a forked arm 28 pivoted on the bolt 5 in such a manner as to be allowed lateral movement by a slot 21, its forked end being guided by the shaft I5. The forked arm 28 has a braking lug 29 of angular shape which is always urged between two teeth of the wheel I! by a spring 36 wound upon the bolt 5, so that when said wheel I1 is rotated, one of the teeth presses the lug 29 and causes it to move the spring 30 backward, and when it has passed the top of said lug, the latter is returned quickly to the original position together with the forked arm 28 by the action of the spring and is urged between the next teeth to brake the wheel. Thus, by this means it is possible to rotate the wheel, calculating each tooth Ithe 'casingby an elastic member 33 attached to its upper edge and accordingly can be retained 'in any sidewise position into which it has moved.

Also, it has a rearwardly extending projection 39 in its upper portion which is fitted into a horizontal guide ,hole 40 of the vertically movable plate 8 so as to enable the locking plate 2i to move horizontally with regard to the vertically movable plate 8. The front plate of the casing I is. pierced with three holes 4| of inverted L shape through which projections 42 of the locking plate 2I project forwardly in order that a control plate 43Vmay be fixed thereto. To the central portion of said control plate 43 is fitted a short sleeve 46 formed integrally with a disc 45 having a notch Figure 5, and accordingly does not prevent the lateral movement of the left projection 42, thus allowing the control plate 43 to move sidewise.
The following is the manner of assembling the lock. of this invention:-
. After first assembling thelocking plate2 I ,control "plate 43 and toothed wheel H as shown in. Figure 1, move the control plate 43 first to the left The cam plate 32 has 7 also secured thereto a finger 38 consisting of and then downward along the hole 4-I of inverted L shape. In this position, loosely place the wheel I2 on the locking plate 2I and fit its slit I I to the tongue 25. Next, put the vertically movable plate 8 with the sleeve It in position, and then place the wheel I3 on said plate 8, and fit the sleeve I to the hole of the toothed wheel I2, also fitting the slit II of the wheel I3 to the tongue 25. Accordingly, the front and back wheels I2 and I3 will be put one upon the other in entirely the same condition, at whiohtime the back projection 39 of the locking plate is fitted in the guide hole 40. Then, combine the cam plate 32 and wheel I8 as shown in Figure 3 and put them on the part shown in Figure 1 and clamp the same together by means of screws 3, 4 and and nuts. Thus, each part may be assembled easily.
In this invention, the knob I4 is turned with finger tips, determining suitably the number of the teeth of the wheel to be moved intermittently, and thus the looking is eifected in a secret manner. When the knob I4 is turned in order, the wheel I I and its projection I9 rotate gradually till the projection is engaged with the projection of the wheel I8 and rotates this wheel and consequently the pin. 34 at its back. When the pin 34 contacts the projection 31 of the cam plate 32, it moves this cam plate to the right in Figure 3 so that the stop 36 will project into the path of the pin 34. Consequently, if the pin 34 strikes against the stop 36, it prevents the rotation of the wheels I! and I3 and makes the knob I4 unable torotate farther.
If from this position the knob I4 is turned one notch in the opposite direction, the wheel I! will rotate one notch in the reverse direction, and
when one of its teeth pushesthe finger 38 leftward from the position shown in Figure 3, the cam plate 32 moves to the left as shown in Figure 9, and the stop 36 moves to the position to allow the passage of the pin 34-. If with this point as a starting point the knob I4 is rotated as in Figure 9, for instance, five notches to the right and then seven intervals to the left, the projections I9 and 20 of the wheels I! and I8 will be brought to the positions shown in Figure 10, whereupon if the hook I is inserted into the casing and the control plate 43 is first moved in a vertical direction,-the locking plate 2I will be lifted, movinsthe vertically movable plate 8 up together with it by its lower end projection 23' and bringing the wheels I2 and I3 supported by it into mesh with the wheels I1 and I8 respectively.
Next, move the control plate 43 sidewise to the right in Fig. 1, whereupon the projection 39 of the locking plate 2! and the plate itself will move along the guide groove 43 of the plate 8 and in a sidewise direction with regard to the said vertically movable plate 8, in consequence of which the tongue on the locking plate 2! will move into the wheels I2 and I3 and the sleeve I0 through the slits I I and 9, to release them into a freely rotatable condition. At the'same time, said movement of the locking plate 2! brings the looking pin 22 into mesh with the hook I. If in this state the knob I4 is rotated suitably, the wheel I2 is displaced by the meshing of the wheel H with the wheel I2, and sometimes the wheel I3 also, by the meshing of the wheel I8 with the wheel I3. Since the slit II is not positioned in the direction of the movement of the tongue 25, the control plate 43 cannot be moved. Thus, the lock may be fastened securely and secretly.
To unfasten the lock of this invention, the degree of previous rotation of wheels I! and It] by said knob I4 must be kept in mind. First, turn the knob 14 in a clockwise direction, and wheels I! and I8 and the pin 3 3 will rotate as previously stated. If the pin 34 is engaged with the projection 31, it pushes the latter sidewise and passes it, moving the cam plate 32 to the right in Figure 3, till it strikes against the stop 36, when it makes it impossible for the knob l 4 to turn. From this position, move the knob one pitch back in the opposite direction. and rotate it five intervals to the right and then seven intervals to the left, counting them as stated before. Thus, the lower wheels I! and [3 are rotated until their slits H coincide with the slit 9 of the sleeve H], with their axes extending horizontally. At this time, maintaining the finger 47 of the control plate 413 at a position opposite to one of the indicating points 48, where the notch 44 of the disc is left open to receive the projection 42, move the control plate 43 first in a sidewise and then in a vertical direction and with it the locking plate 2i and locking pin 22. In this way, it is possible to unfasten the lock easily.
Instead of using the means for finding the starting point consisting of a cam plate, a dial indicator may be provided in front of the casing, and an indicating needle with the shaft 15, so that the angular displacement of the wheels in one and the other direction may be counted accurately. Accordingly, the annexed drawing shows one embodiment of the invention only as an example and does not limit the scope of the invention to it.
I claim:
1. A combination lock, comprising a casing, an annular sleeve in said casing having a radial slit, at one side thereof, a frame movable up and down in said casing and to which said sleeve is fixed, a plurality of toothed wheels freely mounted on said sleeve, and each wheel having a. slit therein, driving wheels in said casing with which said toothed wheels are adapted to be meshed, a knob mounted on said casing and extending therethrough and connecting the said driving wheels for turning said wheels in either direction as desired, a locking plate movable up and down and sidewise in said casing, and a tongue on said locking plate adapted to be inserted into the interior space of said sleeve, said locking plate being adapted to be displaced into an unlocking position only when all of theslits of the driven wheels are aligned with the slit of said sleeve.
2. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a sleeve disposed in said casing having a slit at one side thereof, a frame movable up and down to which the said sleeve is fixed, a plurality of toothed wheels freely mounted on said sleeve, each wheel having a slit therein, a plurality of toothed driving wheels in said casing and with which said first-mentioned wheels are adapted to be meshed, a knob provided exteriorly of the casing and extending therethrough into cooperating relation with said driving wheels, a looking plate movable up and down and sidewise in said casing, a tongue on said locking plate extending into said sleeve, the said casing having holes of inverted L-shape in said casing, projections on said locking plate extending through said holes, and a control plate movable on the exterior of said casing and secured to said projections, for controlling the movement of said locking plate, the said tongue being fitted into the slits of said first-mentioned toothed wheels by first moving the locking plate sidewise by moving the said control plateside-wise and then moving the exterior of said casing and extending therethrough into direct connection with one of said toothed driving wheels, the second of said driving wheels being adapted to be driven by the first, directly connected wheel, a cam plate in said casing for controlling the rotation of said toothed driving wheels and for preventing the rotation of said wheels at one point thereof, and means associated with said cam plate whereby, when the driving wheels are caused to move one notch backwardly after reaching the stop: position on said cam plate, the cam plate is caused to move sidewise so that it no longer stops the rotation of the driving wheels, the starting position of the latter thus being determined.
4. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the lock, a vertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said looking plate being movable sidewise relative to said vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, toothed wheels mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one direction or rotation, and adapted to mesh with said firstmentioned wheels when the vertically movable plate is moved upwardly, means for rotating said shaft, cooperating means on said first-mentioned wheels and said locking plate for locking the wheels against rotation when in one position and for releasing them when in another position, means for controlling said second mentioned wheels to set them to a fixed starting position, and means for moving the locking plate and the vertically movable plate.
5. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, means biasing said locking plate sidewise into its locking position, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the-lock, a vertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said locking plate being movable sidewise relatively to said vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, toothed wheels mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one position, means for controlling said second mentioned wheels to set them to a fixed starting position, and means for moving the locking plate and the vertically movable plate.
6. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the look, a vertically movable plate in'said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said locking plate being movable sidewise relative to said vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, toothed wheels mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one direction of rotation, and adapted to mesh with said first-mentioned wheels when the vertically movable plate is moved upwardly, means for rotating said shaft, means cooperating with one of said second-mentioned wheels for producing a sensible click at each rotation of the means for rotating the shaft through a predetermined angular distance, cooperating means on said first-mentioned wheels and said locking plate for locking the wheels against rotation when in one position and for releasing them when in another position, means for controlling said second-mentioned wheels to set them to a fixed starting position, and means for moving the locking plate and the vertically movable plate.
7. A combination lock, comprising a casing, at least one bolt extending across said casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the lock, avertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said locking plate being movable sidewise relative to said vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, toothed wheels mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one direction of rotation, and adapted to mesh with said first-mentioned wheels when the vertically movable plate is moved upwardly, means for rotating said shaft, a forked arm extending between and engaged about said bolt and said shaft, a braking lug on said forked arm adapted to extend between the teeth of one of said second-mentioned wheels and to be moved outwardly therefrom at each rotation of the wheel through a notch, resilient means bearing against said lug and tending to return the lug and forked arm into their rest position in the trough between adjacent teeth of the wheel, cooperating means on said first-mentioned wheels and said locking plate for locking the wheels against rotation when in one position and for releasing them when in another position, means for controlling said second-mentioned wheels to set them to a fixed starting position, and means for moving the locking plate and the vertically movable plate.
8. As part of a combination lock having a'casing, a bolt extending acrosssaid casing, combination wheels in said casing and a shaft for rotating said wheels, a forked arm extending between and engaged about said bolt and said shaft, a braking lug on said forked arm adapted to extend between the teeth of one of said combination wheels and to be moved outwardly therefrom at each rotation of the wheel through a pitch distance, resilient means bearing against said lug and tending to return the lug and forked arm into their rest position in the trough between adjacent teeth of the wheel, cooperating means on said first-mentioned wheels and said locking plate for locking the wheels against rotation when in one position and for releasing them when in another position, means for controlling said second-mentioned wheels to set them to a fixed starting position, and means for moving the looking plate and the vertically movable plate.
9. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the look, a vertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said locking plate being movable sidewise relative to said vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, toothed wheels mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one direction of rotation, and adapted to mesh with said first-mentioned wheels when the vertically movable plate is moved upwardly, means for rotating said shaft, said first-mentioned wheels being freely mounted on said vertically movable plate, and having a central aperture therein and each having a radial slit therein, extending off of said central aperture and said vertically movable plate having a groove therein, a tongue struck up from said locking plate and adapted to extend into said slits and groove when the locked is in its unlocked position and to rest within the central apertures when the lock is closed and the combination spun, and means for moving the locking plate and the vertically movable plate.
10. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the look, a vertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said locking plate being movable sidewise relative to said vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said Vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, a toothed wheel mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one direction of rotation, and adapted to mesh with said first-mentioned wheels when the vertically movable plate is moved upwardly, means for rotating said shaft, cooperating means on said first-mentioned wheels and said locking plate for locking the wheels against rotation when in one position and for releasing them when in another position, means for controlling said second-mentioned wheels to set them to a 'fixed starting position, a plurality of holes of inverted L-shape in said casing, projections onv said locking plate extending through said holes, so that the holes guide the movement of said locking plate, and a control plate movably mounted on the outside of said casing and connected to said projections for moving said looking plate.
11. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the look, a vertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said locking plate being movable sidewise relative tosaid vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, toothed wheels mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one direction of rotation, and adapted to mesh with said first mentioned wheels when the vertically movable plate is moved upwardly, means for rotating said shaft, cooperating means on said first-mentioned wheels and said locking plate for locking the wheels against rotation when in one position and for releasing them when in another position, means for controlling said second-mentioned wheels to set them to a fixed starting position, a plurality of holes of inverted L-shape in said casing, projections on said locking plate extending through said holes, so that the holes guide the movement of said locking plate, a disc rotatably mounted on said casing so as to overlie said holes and having a notch therein adapted to be disposed in the path of said projections to and in the release of said locking plate for movement, means for rotating said disc, and a control plate movably mounted on the outside of said casing and connected to said projections for moving said locking plate.
12. A combination lock, comprising a. casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the look, a vertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said looking plate being movable sidewise relative to said vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, a second set of toothed wheels, one of which is fast on said shaft and the other of which is loose thereon, projections extending from adjacent faces of said wheels, so that the fixed wheel is adapted to drive the loose wheel in one direction, the said second-mentioned wheels being adapted to mesh with said firstmentioned wheels when the vertically movable plate is moved upwardly, means for rotating said shaft, cooperating means on said first-mentioned wheels and said locking plate for locking the wheels against rotation when in one position and for releasing them when in another position, means for controlling said second-mentioned wheels to set them in a fixed starting position, and means for moving the locking plate and the vertically movable plate.
13. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the look, a vertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said looking plate being movable sidewise relative to said vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, toothed wheels mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one direction of rotation, and adapted to mesh with said firstmentioned wheels when the vertically movable J plate is moved upwardly, means forrotating said shaft, said first-mentioned wheels having central. apertures and each havi a radial slit therein extending off of said aperture, a collar formed in said vertically movable plate and serving as a hub on which said first-mentioned wheels are loosely mounted, said vertically movable plate having a groove therein, a tongue struck up from said locking plate and adapted to extend into said slits and groove when the lock is in its unlocked position and to rest within the central apertures when the lock is closed and the cornb-i-nation spun, means-for controlling said secondmentioned wheels to set them to a fixed starting position, and means for moving the locking plate and the vertically movable plate.
14. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the look, a vertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate,said locking plate being movable sidewise relative to said verticallymovable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, toothed wheels mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one direction of rotation, and adapted to mesh with said first-mentioned wheels when the vertically movable plate is moved upwardly, means for rotating said shaft, cooperating means on said first-mentioned Wheels and said locking plate for locking the wheels against rotation when in one position and for releasing them when in another position, a cam plate movably secured to said casing,having'an edge therein, a stop and a projection being provided in said cam edge, a pin projecting from one of said secend-mentioned wheels into said cam edge, a finger serving as a ratchet and projecting in the direction of the path of said wheel, rotation of said wheel in one direction causing the pin to engage the projection and to move the cam plate sidewise so that the finger is in the path of the wheel, continued movement of the wheel in the same direction bringing the pin into engagement with the stop, thus determining a fixed starting point for the combination, reverse movement of the wheel for one pitch distance causing the teeth of the wheel to engage the finger and to push it and the cam plate out of the way, whereupon the combination can be set, and means for moving the locking plate and the vertically movable plate.
15. A combination lock, comprising a casing, a locking plate in said casing movable through its vertical plane, a locking pin on said locking plate, a hook on said casing and adapted to extend therein into cooperating relationship with the locking pin to close the look, a vertically movable plate in said casing, adapted to be moved vertically along with said locking plate, said locking plate being movable sideWise relative to said vertically movable plate, toothed wheels on said vertically movable plate, a shaft extending through said casing, toothed wheels mounted on said shaft in such manner that one is actuated by the other, and this in only one direction of rotation, and adapted to mesh with said first-mentioned wheels. when the vertically movable plate is moved up wardly, means for rotating said shaft, cooperating means on said first-mentioned wheels and said locking plate for locking the wheels against rotation when in one position and for releasing them when in another position, a cam plate movably securedto said casing, having an edge therein, a guide for said cam plate fixed to said casing, an elastic member on said cam plate for pressing against a wall of said casing, said guide and said elastic member cooperating to guide said cam plate in its movement, a stop and a projection being provided in said cam edge, a pin projecting from one of said second-mentioned wheels into said cam edge, a finger serving as a ratchet and projecting in the direction of the path of said.
wheel, rotation of said wheel in one direction causing the pin to engage the projection and to engage the finger and. to push it and the cam plate out of the way, whereupon the combination can be set, and means for moving the locking 10 plate and the vertically movable plate.
